hey fellas![]()
i ordered a studio XPS 16 from the dell outlet and got it in yesterday.
now im having a few issues with it.
1. specs of dust behind screen (not dead pixels)
2. power supply makes ticking / sparking noises and gets really hot
3. unit gets extremely hot to where i cant use it on my lap
other then that i really like the unit, its kinda cute like the macbook lol but don't know if i can live with the heat.
what would you do in my situation? i want to call dell but don't know how to approach them with my issues. if it comes down to it, would it be unreasonable to ask for a full refund with out restocking fees and getting them to also pick up this unit?

The heat is a known and widespread issue for the XPS16. The design of the chassis makes it that you end up blocking the back fan if you tilt the screen past 90 degrees.
There isn't much to do for the heat as it's not a unit defect and it depends on the load you put onto the XPS.
The things people have done to reduce heat include undervolting, buying a laptop cooler and purchasing an SSD drive(which does not turn and therfore produces less heat).
The first 2 problems however seem to be manufacturer defaults so I'd say you should contact Dell for that since you're still under warranty for those.
Arguably, if the heat is the main problem you're having, you'll have to try one of the solutions above or look elsewhere sadly. -
Sorry, you are having these issues with your purchase already.
The outlet purchases are basically the same as a new purchase from dell.com.
You have 21 days from date of purchase for a return for a refund/replacement.
Here is some information for you: (taken from the Outlet itself)

Hope that helps!

well i think its time to return the unit and get a refund.
today i was play left 4 dead and my speakers blew. there was a load pop that came from both the speakers and then they died. the right speaker started to crackle and came back to life but sounded very muffled. then the left one started to come back in the same manner but not as loud. i told my husband about the issue and he tried a few things to fix it. he said he tried uninstalling and reinstalling the newest sound drivers. that didn't really fix the problem as now the speakers sound uneven. now instead of a 50/50 split in sound there is a 35/65 split and it sound bad as no mid range is even coming out of the left speaker.
this is gonna stink trying to explain all my issues to dell.
o and thanks guys for your input -
Good luck to you..and keep us posted on how the return is coming along for you...and what you have decided to do on your next lappy purchase!

thanks, im still unable to get the unit returned. dell has treated me horribly up to this point, im about to cry
ive been hung on 3 times even though im being sweet to them. 3.5hrs later and still no resolve to my issues.
if im able to straighten this out with dell im thinking of buying a hp dv7 but i have to run that buy my husband first because its a little bit more money with comparable specs. however it does have a faster video card which im sure my husband will like -
you shall ask for a replacement first, dell exchanges defective units with equal or better specs unit, although its getting harder every year to get dell to honor that. indian support are usually quick to solve the problem, us reps are more likely give you a hard time on returns and refunds.
i think dell is intentional to have us based support plays a "bad cop" role
while indians and 3rd technicians are the "good cop".
what would you do? SXPS 16 issues
