My new SXPS 1645 arrives Monday and I have AS5 and cleaner handy. I need to know where to apply AS5 and what to do about the motherboard chipset and GPU RAM. There are these thick sticky pads on those, do I peal them off and use AS5? Can I leave them on or do I need to replace them?

The more important question I was wondering as well, is if opening the laptop and applying AS5 would void the warranty in anyway. Some confirmation would be awesome before I attempt this.

Yes it will but no one has to know.

Sometimes peeling them off can leave a gap which is very very bad. So here are the options
1) replace the pads with something better
a) newer thermal pads
b) (If you are serious about the job) copper shims
2) Use AS5 along with the pads. Generally speaking it's an ugly thing to do to mix pads and paste but in a couple other threads I read people reported doing this and got somewhat better temps, and it probably can't hurt.
3) Leave em alone, clearly the biggest bang for the buck are the GPU/CPU applications of thermal paste -
cool, so there is no way for them to tell if we opened this babe up? let alone the addition of some AS5 (if applied like a pro:wink
Of course we all have our fingers crossed that our laptops would hopefully never need opening up in the first place, but with the current track record the 1645's got, it seems inevitable

ok, for now I will stick with re-using those pads and being careful not to disturbe them during the process. From my examination it doesn't look like those components get hot enough to bother if I don't have the supplies handy, which is my concern.

Do the thermal pads lower the temperature for gaming purposes or is it worth doing for the everyday use? Has anyone tried copper heatsinks for XPS, I've had them for Asus and the results were good. Thanks.
