I see lots of people celebrating that the fifteen incher gets the higher end i7 quads, but being the frugal mofo I am, I'm kinda pissed that there is no lower end i5s avaliable. If they were gonna offer all i7s, they might as well also offer 2649M so I can get some better battery life.

Anyways, the point I ranting about is I wish that they would offer i5 2520M so I can save a hundred for performance I don't need.

Also really hope coupons are gonna come out.

Yeah, I was disappointed to see that too. I know the super high-end processors are racking up the price and I'd never need anything more powerful than an i5 anyway...

Maybe just be a pricing scheme. Try calling up Dell and see if they have unlisted stuff cause SB dual Core i5 have been out with the launch of the refreshed MBP line.

Actually they did have at one point but seems that they've modified the pages so it's no longer possible. Guess in the future they may bring it back.

You can still buy the L501x with the lower end 1st gen i5's here:

Dell XPS 15 Laptop Details | Dell

Obviously, dell can't offer every single processor intel makes. Too much R&D. So, they pick what they believe the market wants and go with it. Comparing the 2520 and 2620 reveals only a small difference in clock speed (0.2GHz base and turbo), which is not going to make that much of a difference in batter life. Maybe 15-20 minutes max if all you did was let it sit there at the desktop screen for 5 hours. Probably wouldn't even notice it when actually being productive, and how you configure your power saving options will save more battery life than the difference between the processors.

Can't really fault them for releasing their newest version of their 15" performance laptop with high end processors first.

Most people don't buy the XPS for lower end cpu's, they usually go to the Inspiron line for those. I'm not saying they won't eventually show up in the L502X, just that it's not unreasonable to expect them to be a lower priority than the higher end cpu's

the 2520 and 2620 will probably provide similar batterylife, but the 2649M will with 10 less watts. I prefer the 2520 because its more than 100 cheaper. I highly doubt offering more CPU options adds much more R&D costs since they all use the same socket, its just picking a different CPU to drop in. Its also not an issue with supply because the L702x offers the whole spectrum. Dell obviously knows the 15in is going to be the more mainstream option just by definition, so why are they cramming higher end CPUs down the consumer's throat?

The way I look at it is, not every nvidia gpu supports optimus. And not every intel processor supports it either. On top of that, dell writes their own drivers for the nvidia cards as well as other components. If you've been looking lately, you will notice that dell is big on the whole optimus thing, which makes complete sense and is one of the reasons I bought this laptop. Decent graphics for when you need it, and battery life for when you don't. When you add higher end processors to the mix, you end up with what dell thinks the XPS line should represent: Great performance with decent battery life, all in a 15" laptop. I personally think it's a win/win for the consumer at the prices they cost. Economically speaking, this is a functional perfectly competitive market at it's finest.

The 2649M hasn't even been launched yet, how is Dell supposed to offer it? Also, I'm sure you'll see the i5s become available in the XPS15 within a few months.

uhhh.... the thing about intel processors not supporting optimus was solely an issue with i7s from last gen since they did not have integrated graphics. With intel's push for better integrated platform ie huron river, pretty much all consumer chips have integrates meaning nearly all support optimus. Anyways, the point is only the i7s had issues with optimus previously, and I want my i5s which did not and do not have issues with optimus. As for drivers, 1 I get all my drivers from laptopvideo2go, and 2 I highly doubt dell does that much to stock nvidia drivers, and even then its not something a multimillion (billion?) dollar corp like dell worries about.

didn't know 2649M hasn't launched. According to wiki they were suppose to launch in 2 tiers, both of which have been launched. And f that, I want my mofo i5s NOW. been waiting for too long as it is... can't even play dota on this craptop :(
