will there ever be a new dell gaming xps laptop "not alien ware" like a m1830 with 9800m gtx sli and quad core processor? Also will the m1530 ever be updated to support better graphics like 9800m gts
-
Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
I don't know abut an M1730 refresh, but I can basically guarantee you that there won't be an M1530 refresh with a faster GPU. Dell has already had enough trouble cooling the current M1530 graphics options, and I don't think they want any more problems.
-
Nope, Dell plans on riding their current XPS line to their demise. They'll still have the same laptops for sale in 50 years.
-
That's sad to hear
I think they look awesome
I was initially planning to buy a M1530, but it was outdated compared to mine, and cost a lot more than the Acer
If it was cheaper I would have bought, it no question about it
If they are re-vamped with competitive pricing, I know what my next laptop is
Hopefully someone knocks some sense into them -

They are pushing their gaming sales to Alienware.
-
-
I wanted a 15.4" beast and alienware was waay out of my budget, m1530 was closer but outdated.
Maybe the should keep both
XPS - Budget/Midrange gamer
Alienware - Enthusiast / high-end gamer [hardcore]
-
Well, if you can afford a M1730, then you most certainly afford a M17 which I think is the better of the two and depending on how you configured it, cheaper.
AW has also greatly reduced the price of the m15x which makes it very affordable and very tempting if you look past the build quality issue. -
the alienware m17 sure looks better than the m1730 to me, but i unfortunately i own a m1730
-
Thats like saying buy an Alfa Romeo, so long as you are not too far from an Alfa dealer and are happy to walk most of the time! -

I just ordered an XPS M1530 C2D T8300 2.4ghz 4gb ram with the 256mb nVidia graphics and 256gb SSD and it should play most of the games I want to play. Sure I won't be able to max out the settings on all of the new releases but I'm not terribly worried about it - if I really want graphical performance I'll go to my desktop running SLI for a heck of a lot cheaper than I can get an Alienware.
The main reason I don't personally see a need for an ultra high performance gaming laptop beyond what the XPS can do (and the way I justified it) is that if I'm somewhere that I'm not able to use my desktop I'm probably not going to be doing much Gaming anyways
Edit: Just checked my order status - it's supposed to be here by 3pm today yay! -
The M1530 isn't even available anymore in some countries so I'm pretty sure it's being phased out in favour of the SXPS 16. They're probably just getting rid of the last of their stock at the moment (notice the big sales?). So it won't be updated, but I couldnt say for anything else.
-
According to Dell reps, the Studio XPS line does NOT replace the XPS ones. It's just a new Line up. I don't know if that means they're refreshing the XPS notebooks, but I hope they do because I like them!
Also, I believe Dell should really clean up their line up. I mean, they have the Inspiron line, Studio, Studio XPS and XPS! what's next? Adamo! Keep them coming Dell, keep them coming... (that's aside from the business line ups!) -
I guess you could deduce that if they're removing the current XPS models (which they are - at least some of them), and the Studio XPS's don't replace them, then they ARE going to bring out refreshed models.
-
I hope so, the XPS gaming laptops rock
.

Overall pretty satisfied. The LED LCD was a bit washed out so I turned the gamma down in the nVidia control panel and all is wonderful
The solid state drive is performing better than I had hoped
Now to install some games and see how they do! -
There is seemingly still a niche here still for Dell with their XPS gaming rigs if they would revert back to a single gfx card format. I have their XPS M1710 and it's still kicking butt. Why not update with a single 9800GTX, or ATI 4850?
Alienware is so ridiculously expensive here it's a joke. Their stock standard M17 costs $5552NZ and that's AFTER a $250 mail in rebate. This standard model has a single ATI 3870, a P8400 CPU, 2gb RAM and a 1440x900 res screen... Who the hell would pay that much for a laptop of that spec!?
Want something even funnier!? Lets bring that up to a comparitive spec for a gaming laptop, add a 2nd 3870, a T9600 CPU, 4gb RAM (total) and a 1920x1200 res screen - $8399NZ... that's $4267USD btw... lol... -
Alienware isn't all that bad for a boutique brand provided you follow the usual rules when purchasing Dell products (ie. go with the cheapest RAM and storage options and upgrade those yourself later). For $1449 you can pick up a base model m15x with a 512MB 9800GT (assuming you're fine with gaming on a 15" screen, which is more than sufficient for me).
-
Hehe... ok an M15x. The only choice we get comes with a 256mb 8600GT, a T8100 CPU, and 1 (count it... one!) gb RAM - $4292NZ or $2177US.
Edit: I should say the 8600 is the only gfx card choice we get. You can upgrade the other bits but seriously, why would you bother at that starting price. -
Why does the M15x only support 677mhz ram?I thought it would support DDR3 1066MHZ.For such insane prices better components should be offered. For this price a comparable D900k could be configured.
-
Ooo... sorry, just have to add, I found the 9800GT version of the M15x... still with only 1gb RAM - $6115NZ or $3105US
So lets get extreme and upgrade this puppy with the X9000 Extreme CPU, 4gb RAM total, and a 500gb hard drive - $9375NZ. Thank god for the $150 rebate I can get on that... ($4757US)
Good question about the RAM speeds too.
(I'll shutup now...) -
Yes they are very expensive but offer a monthly payment.
-
Not here they don't... even if they did they're so far out of whack with competitors products, and really offer nothing to justify the extra expenditure other than a custom molded case and glowy logo.
-
http://www.alienware.com/customize/...Code=PC-LT-AREA51M15X-AI1&SubCode=SKU-DEFAULT
It allows buyer an monthly payment. What do you mean by not here. -
New Zealand... that's why I've been quoting both the NZ and US currency in my earlier posts.
-
Oh sorry I didnt notice that.
-
I know, I know, but I'm willing to pay as well, for a well spec'd machine with a single, grunty card.
My M1710 was just a tad over $3100NZ. The newer M1730 with twin 8800GTX is $4800NZ. Alienware (owned by Dell) has their M17x model machine with a significantly less poweful GPU and lower spec'd in every other area than the 1730, for $5500NZ. That just doesn't make sense.
I'm just trying to say in line with the OP's question, that a new 17" XPS model with a single 9800GTX, or ATI 4850/70, slotted in there in the high $3000's would clean up. -
you are paying for all the alien crap i guess...
-
i paid 1200 for my m170 originally+500 for the 5 year cc warranty, now i have a m1730 with 8800's. cant beat that.
-
Guess the extra warranty was worth it huh
I can't even find alienwares here where I live [KSA - google it]
I found an old 17" superman edition on sale for what came out to $1500.
I don't remember the specs but it shipped with XP and was the last piece -
spradhan01 Notebook Virtuoso
So is dell trying to sell all the remaining stock with 9800m GT SLI in such a cheap price?
-
They are actually now offering the m1730 with the 9800M GTX in Sli on many of their sites
-
Yeah, remember Dell doesn't sell Alienware in a lot of countries. And instead they're updating the M1730 with the 9800's.
will dell ever make a new gaming xps?
