    hello everyone,

I am about to buy a dell xps 15 and i have the gt 540m as highest configuration for graphics card. It's ok for me for now, but i plan an upgrade (preferably gtx series cards) later(1-2 years). Will it be possible? I know that it would be possible for desktop, but laptops are different story. Also is the card gt 540m overclockable? What are the performance gains i can expect?

Important: Make sure, regardless of what other upgrades you get, that you get the 1920x1080 B+RGLED display upgrade. Get this upgrade factored in before you select any other upgrades.

The 1366x768 display (the default screen option, never leave this option checked) is a terrible screen. The resolution itself makes everything onscreen really big and makes it difficult to fit much onscreen at once. 1366x768 is the same resolution used in 12-inch laptops, so 1366x768 in a 15.6" screen gives you the same amount of desktop workspace as a 12-inch laptop. Image quality is also terrible, due mainly to the low contrast ratio and image-griddiness. It's the worst type of screen available for a 15.6" laptop.

However, the 1920x1080 B+RGLED display is one of the best quality screens available for a 15.6" laptop. It's got much higher contrast, and also much more vibrant colors. The resolution gives you a much less cramped workspace as well, and easily allows two windows onscreen at a time.

The 1920x1080 display is the most important upgrade and you should not buy the XPS 15 in any configuration that does not include this upgrade.
    - It makes more of a difference than any other upgrade
    - In the bare-minimum config of the XPS 15 with no upgrades, the only terrible component is the screen. Everything else is good. You have to upgrade the screen before you upgrade anything else, and you have to upgrade the screen before you buy the XPS 15.
    - The screen affects literally everything you do. It makes the most wide-spread difference. The GPU only affects games, and the CPU only affects certain performance-intensive tasks and often doesn't even affect games much if at all.
