Does anyone else notice windows 7 64 bit being really slow?

I can't even listen to music and go on the internet at the same time or my 1640 will slow down so much that i have to reboot. The CPU is at 100% nearly all the time no matter what. I think I got a bad one of the bunch. I already had to replace the power cord and the hdd.

That isn't normal. What process is causing 100% CPU?

Sorry if this is a beginners suggestion but could you have a virus already infecting your system?
Need to replace your system's CPU or reinstall windows?

Some suggestions to throw out there

its no virus or spyware, i defragmented, cleaned up old files, cleaned the registry. I use the zune software for music and chrome for the browser. They end up using most of the 100%. After a little bit of listening to music, it will just get so slow. So basically, I can't multitask at all. Are all the 1640's like this or should I be able to run a few programs at the same time w/o my laptop exploding ?

my friend says I should just go to 32 bit windows 7 but I don't have any cash, so that's gonna be hard to do.

The problem isn't 64-bit Windows, since many of us are using it without problems. If you know how, check the Task Manager to see which processes are using most of the CPU. If you really think Zune and Chrome are to blame, try not using Zune for awhile and using Firefox for the browser. Make sure it isn't some other process using all the CPU, because that would be suspicious behavior. But for now, temporarily don't use Zune and Chrome so you can narrow down the variables.

Download ProceXP as this will give you an easier way of tracking down those memory / processor hungry apps. I would definitely try closing all background / foreground applications and start them up one at a time until you start to notice a performance drop, then check that app's website to see if others are experiencing similar issues.

First run Process Explorer (A simple download from Microsoft). See what processes are causing the excess CPU usage. If it's just the two programs (I highly doubt it would be chrome) then i would completely uninstalled them with REVO Uninstaller and then try and re-install them. However if every program you run has memory leaks and uses excessive CPU usage, then i would reformat and reinstall Windows.

you could just use your 64 bit key on a 32 bit disc, thats legal :)

but i agree something is not right, 64 bit windows works smoother on my machine than 32 bit

i did a clean install of 64 just a little bit ago.

and when i first start up programs, it is fine....but after a while, i will notice the programs that I have just been running start eating up memory and cpu %.

So I close them down completely and my cpu is still cookin and fans are on full blast. It becomes real laggy and I have to restart my laptop to get it back to normal. The programs I am using don't take full advantage of 64 bit windows. Also, I have never had any problems with my other computers that have windows 7 32 bit (4 gb ram installed on those too).

i know for a fact that I am overheating.....it shuts down sometimes by itself when it gets too hot and i can barely rest my hands on it to type.

i was talking to a dell rep the other day and asked about a replacement....he tried to get me to take an inspiron with half the hdd space, smaller screen, half the price, overall worse in every way....why would they even offer me that?

I was just saying, it doesnt sound like software is causing the issues. The hardware may be causing it, the cpu/gpu is protecting itself from dieing for some reason. Causing huge performance hits as its tries to downclock and reduce heat output. Heatsink screwed up somehow?

I'd say a hintsink issue too. But why didn't you demand a replacement for your laptop? Dell shouldnt have tried to give you a replacement of a lesser value!

yea, that doesn't sound right. It probably is a problem with your machine/hardware. Windows 7 should fly like an eagle on the 1640. might want to get a replacement...

I've seen problems like this with a lot of public PCs at institutions I've used in the past. For some unexplained reason, some of them run WinXP extremely slow, while others run them fast. ... in particular...Dell desktop PCs...

I get the same thing too when I run Zune and Chrome.

Long story short, when you download music, Itunes, Zune, Windows Media Player and any other media players go out and try to get album art for each song. It can bog down a computer quite a bit.
