Alright. Right now I have windows 7 home premium but am moving to Professional (remote desktop hosting). I have a valid key for professional. Can I just use the upgrade feature to save the hassle of backups, updates, drivers, etc?

Yep, just go to Control Panel click "Windows anytime upgrade" and select enter the key option. If that happens to fail, you can just insert your disk into your drive and navigate to your optical drive (in Win 7) and install from there.
