Jack - XP installed fine on my 1530 with no change to the BIOS. There is an option in the BIOS to change modes but I left mine at default (which I believe is called compatibility mode in the BIOS). The 1530 uses SATA HD's - mine came with a 160-Gb 7200-rpm version. I re-installed mine as a dual-booter and it runs great in both XP and Vista, but, it was quite a trick to get the audio working in XP (solved with Dell's R180044).

"This is strange? I thought you couldn't install XP Pro or XP on a newer Vista loaded notebook as the XP OS won't recognize the HD." by jack53

The reason is AHCI. You can turn it off in the bios as stated and install with no problem. However you can also utilize the newer AHCI technology by slipstreaming SATA drivers for the Intel 965GM chipset, burn a new install CD, and your good to go. But a word to the wise - if you plan on using AHCI, please do yourself a favor and enable it in bios BEFORE you install XP. It's next to impossible to install XP under compatibilty mode and then switch on AHCI in bios after the fact. You will be in blue screen misery. Good luck with that if you try the latter (just do it before installing).

I edited to include this warning - please include all of the drivers in the Intel INF file for slipstreaming. It is better to include all of them than to guess at what you need and be wrong. I have done that before and it sux. BTW, I have XP Pro running perfectly on my M1530 with AHCI enabled in bios by doing exactly as I have posted. Don't let Dell fool you into believing that your stuck with Vista.

Well, the Toshiba and Gateway I had didn't have the AHCI provision in BIOS.
It is nice to know that my XPS m1530 does.
I learned the hard way how to do slipstreaming when I did the Toshiba for a friend.

    New Poster!

So I went through everything and got XP Working fine, but for some reason I will just randomly restart. No Biggie.

My major problem is that my Blu-ray drive died, and I have to send it in to dell to have it repaired. That being said, I want to restore my factory settings to Vista.

Does anyone have any idea as to how I can use the recovery partition (that I saved) to get my HD back to factory defaults. I recently tried to move back up to Vista Ult. so that is what I am at now. Any help would be GREAT! Thanks

Preston99 did you disable that faulty hardware in device manager? If not I would do so because it possibly could have something to do with your issue.

Also, what kind of temps are you recording? This could easily be a heat problem. You want to know the temps of the CPU/GPU when the shutdown occurs.

One more question (which superceeds my previous advice) is do you have to send the system back or just the drive (if it's an XPS with a slot loader then you will have to send back the system)?

I have the system right now. Yes, it is slot load, which is why I have to send it to tell to have it repaired. I do not want to send it back to dell with the harddrive in a state that could effect my warranty. I saved the recovery partition, but I don't know how to make my computer boot to the recovery environment to use the restore feature.

    Any ideas?

Very sorry not to notice this. I take it by your wording that it is alright to post on this thread as you have renewed this thread. I hope that's right.

Prestonn99 you don't have to wory about sending it back with everyhting on the drive as it was when you got it, as far as I know. I have read about several people completely wiping their drive and then sending it in. I myself have done this two times with Dell. It appears that they don't mind that. Their techs can easily reinstate the drive.

If someone else has ever heard or experienced contrary please post.
