So I turned on my laptop for the second time since purchasing it and it froze. I then did a hard restart and it booted up to the login screen but I was unable to do anything from there. I restarted it about 3-4 times and had the same issue. Finally, i called Dell tech support and they had me remove the battery and start things up again. It worked for the most part until I plugged in my tv (through HDMI) and had the laptop freeze about 2-3 more times doing this. It also seems generally slow to start up (granted I've never had anything with VISTA installed before).

What I'm wondering is if these problems seem typical for new 1340s. Is this something that a reformat would likely solve or do I just have a defective computer?

I had the same issue with the HDMI, it would BSOD everytime I plugged in my TV. After a format and clean install, the system was super fast and has never crashed.

My sistem used to freeze a lot but only when idling in windows. I was going to return it but with the new bios A06 it has never frozen so I hope this fixed it. Try to update the bios and ofcourse clean windows install always helps.

So for those of you that did a reformat, did your 1340 come with a MediaDirect 3.3 disc? The only discs I got were the vista disc, drivers, and works. Am I going to be able to reformat without this? I only know about it because of the Dell reformat guide located here.

The 1340 doesnt come with MediaDirect. You just load the OS disk and reformat/install from there.

Good luck! I've finished formating and am reinstalling now.

    Hi,

I have a Dell Studio XPS 1340 with Vista Ultimate and a NVIDIA GeForce 9500M graphics card. The XPS has a HDMI port which I've tried using to connect to my Panasonic Vierra Plasma (which has 3 HDMI ports) and I simply cannot get either picture or sound onto the TV and I know I'm selecting the right HDMI port on the TV. (I've tried them all BTW!!).

I've looked all over and can't find a solution. Can anyone give me some pointers?

    Regards,

    Ben
