Hey everyone, I'm having a rather weird problem.
Symptoms:
1. 840 is not detected in BIOS, except only in ATA mode (not AHCI, not Intel Rapid Start)
2. 840 is seen in Linux (PartedMagic) using GPartEd and partitions can be created (ATA mode)
3. 840 is NOT seen in Windows (completely, not even in Disk Manager), even when booting in ATA mode (despite being seen in the BIOS)
I don't know what to suspect anymore. Is my mainboard bad? If so, considering that my warranty just ran out, am I screwed?

Just tried the Samsung 840 EVO mSATA 512Gb in another laptop and saw the same symptoms.
Has anyone successfully used an 840 EVO mSATA in their XPS 15 (9530)?
Please help........ -

ExParrot, thank you for replying! Just wanted to double check - you used the mSATA version, correct? And you're running it in AHCI mode, correct?
-
Yes, mSATA and AHCI. Sounds like you may have a defective SSD.
Note that there are now 2 firmware patches out for the 840 EVO drives. If you return yours I'd suggest getting a different drive, like the 850 EVO, that doesn't have this issue. -
Indeed, I tried applying the firmware patches (made a bootable flash disk with the upgrader that looks a lot like DOS), but even that does not detect the drive.
Wish I knew about the 850s earlier...
Thanks again for the info! -
I have installed the actual 2.5" Samsung 840 EVO, but I don't know if I did it correctly, it still take a while for it to boot up.
I'm running Windows 8, is there a way to see if it is working the way it is supposed to be?
xps 15 (9530) and samsung 840 evo
