    Hey guys-

i remember talking about this issue unsolved from some thread i can't remember... but here's the scenario:

    (tech specs)
    1080p
    420m

    adjust to full brightness
    go on to hulu.com
    load up a video
from the menu on the right, click lower lights.

watch carefully on the screen and you'll see that not only does the background get darker, but the entire screen gets dark.

now open up a new window that has more "bright" colors, say google.com
the screen gradually brightens up again.

I've figured this only happens when running on Intel graphics card, not when running with 420m. strange....

YES! I posted about this exact issue yesterday and it didn't get much attention!

Glad to see I'm not the only one with keen eyesight.

I have gotten used to this behavior because I have used projectors that do this to enhance contrast. The idea is when the picture on the screen is mostly dark, the brightness dims to enhance blacks (less brightness = darker blacks) and when the picture is bright, it boosts brightness to make things seem more vivid. Both of these effectively maximize contrast. This has to be a built in feature, I can't figure out if its the new Intel drivers or what though...I'm not seeing any options to toggle it.

Yes, I assume it is a built-in feature and not a problem with the screen, as my Dell SP23W Monitor does the exact same thing. Pretty cool that a laptop screen does it actualy ... another selling point! heh

I posted in the "owners lounge" about mine doing this too. BUT, it gets so dark that I can't see any text on the screen.

After 30 seconds or so the brightness starts going back up. This has only happened a couple times and it's always when its using the intel drivers.

I also notice the slight dimming on a regular basis as you described. I find it annoying and I'm not convinced that its supposed to do this.

At first I thought it might be a defective screen, too. But, eventually I realized the conditions under which it happens are consistent with an auto-contrast feature.

I think Intel probably included this in their newest drivers, but has not yet implemented a toggle for the functionality in the control panel. That's just my guess.

It's just that sometimes when the screen dims the video quality changes as well. like colors change into weird colors...

Just to let you guys know...I have the XPS 17 and noticed this today as well....so its not just a XPS 15 1080p display feature....

I would really like to know the official explanation for this.

Definitely have NOT noticed this. I've never seen colors so vivid and accurate on a laptop before.
