i'm planning to purchase the xps 1530 from the dell.ca site but as i'm going through the customization of the laptop, it doesn't say if vista is 32bit or 64bit. i'm planning to get 4gb of ram so would they give me 64bit vista automatically?
and if 64bit vista is not an option, would it be worth it to get 4gb of ram or should i just get 3gb's of ram?
    thanks

so it'd probably be a better idea to get 3gb's of ram if i were to stick with 32 bit? or would it be easy to change the os into 64bit?

Dell has a policy stating that they are required to ship the 64-bit DVD of any 32-bit version of Vista ordered. Chat with Tech Support when you want the DVD. If they argue with you or say they can't do it, bring up "DSN policy document ID 158098". That's the reference to Dell's internal policy.

You should probably ask, but getting 64-bit Vista is a good future-proof upgrade as more and more applications will be compiled for the x64 architecture. Btw, for x64 I would recommend 4GB of RAM.

Yeah, Dell backtracked on that and they do not do it anymore. Unless you get Business or Ultimate, which is a rip off for us.

Quote from a post on a forum:

"However, at this point Dell support reps are fighting this and stating that only Ultimate is eligible. There is a thread over on the Dell Forums where the Dell reps there are trying to assist in getting this fixed."

    Whether or not it's legitimate, I don't know...but...we'll see I guess.

I chatted with tech support this morning and the rep said I needed to purchase 64 bit separately. However, after I asked to talk to his manager there was a 2-3 minute pause and he came back and said he could ship me a copy right away. I purchased Ultimate with my system so that may have helped.

Speaking to a manager won't make any difference I'm afraid.
The simple fact of the matter, is that Dell won't supply 64bit DVD's to anyone - other than Vista Business or Vista Ultimate customers.
See here for confirmation of the current policy (as of 20th June):

Quick solution: download a copy of Vista 32 and 64 bit retail and OEM all versions from a torrent site :). Your CD key will work with the 64-bit equivalent version.

I purchased my 1530 through the home division. So apparently some managers are not using that policy. As with anything, your results may vary.

I doubt you'd get anywhere since you'd have to talk to order modification and it's doubtful they would give you the 64 bit. Your best bet is to wait and then talk to technical support and get it escalated to a supervisor. There's a link around that has a dell insider that gives you a policy number to quote. even though the policy changed the beginning of june you still can give it a shot. It worked for me.
