If the stock thermal compound is a cheap/inferior product (or badly applied), then YES, replacing it with AS5 will make some difference. Probably not an awful lot, maybe a couple of degrees.

But on the flip side, if the stock compound is already a good material and very well applied, you could replace it with AS5 and maybe see little/no difference.

Be aware it will void your warranty, if they notice/care.

Yes it will make a big difference, provided nothing else is wrong with the cooling system, and you are suffering high temps (past 84c).

As v c stated, if your temps are already good (max 80c or less), then you will only see maybe 2 - 4c drop in max temp.

I went from a GPU max of 94c to 76c and I didn't even use Arctic Silver, I used Dynex Silver Paste which isn't as good as AS5. I had failed thermal pads.

It has been my experience, as well as many others, that the heatsink assembly actually does a reasonable job of cooling. The problem seems to be the thermal pads that Dell uses. It seems that those pads fail most of the time. Cleaning the remains and applying thermal compound will fix this.

I hope you know what you are doing. There are a few ways that this mod can go wrong.

hey elverde, i have applied AS5 on my m1530, and ive only been able to kick off 1 C of my GPU's max temp from 81 to 80, so its really not a big difference, but it may actually help if you are experiencing higher temps than, say, 84 C, because that could mean that your thermal paste was badly applied, and you can go with AS5, but also remember that high temps can be caused by defective motherboards/GPUs so if you are getting higher temps, get yours replaced

why would you wanna put it on the fan...
It won't help the fan run faster...

Honestly if you're not sure, i don't think you should be trying this out...you may end up screwing something up, especially using AS5, a metallic based thermal, you may short something @_@.

And im still trying to figure out if its "official" that replaying the thermal = warranty void.

speaking of wich.... i had to apply arctic silver today to my m1530.... dell replaced my motherboard back in december.... i was getting good temps... but started raising and today playing cod 5 got to87 the gpu.... so i applied arctic silver.. and now it wont get pas 85... and is my understanding that this is in the break in period.... after a week a should get better temps... after several thermal cicles... i usually play with a belking kooler.... u would go past 81.... not it wont go pat 75 in the cooler.... without cooler... max 85, with dell pads almost 97... so there u got a living proof... recent proof.... it is good.... freaking dell pads will last two months only..

lol, it was actually funny, the thermal paste on the heatsink ( especially on the gpu) actually had dirt, and the tech was like ..... mmm thats not normal.... oh well if you get high temps you can just call us..... if you like... , gonna demand for brand new replacements this time, enough is enough!
