    Hey all,

I just got a coolermaster notepal infinite cooler today and have tried it out for 30 min playing left 4 dead. Usually my gpu would throttle due to high temps but it isnt anymore with the cooler, although it is still really hot.

    max temps
gpu = 80 degrees c (still really hot!, used to throttle at 84)
cpu = 73 degrees c (much much better, used to reach 84 as well)

So the cooler has helped although not as much as i would like for the gpu. It gets me thinking that without the throttling that gpu could reach 90 degrees easily.

It also doesnt really decrease the idle temps too much, maybe 5 degrees ish.

Overall, it definitely helps, but this laptop is still damn hot, even with the cooler. I will continue testing with different games and will let you know the outcomes.

I think as long as your GPU temperature is below 84C there is no reason to worry about heat in terms of immediate performance. I don't think GPU/CPU at temperatures both at 80C will be better than for example, 60C.

If the cooler always keeps the GPU below 84C is quieter than without it, I'd say it is a good cooler for this laptop.

well i played left 4 dead for about an hour tonight and still got the gpu throttling. i even took a screen shot to show dell. I think im gonna call them tomorrow and see what they can do because if this laptop cannot stay cool enough to play a game that is 2 years old without throttling every 2 min then there is something wrong. i cant deal with this anymore, it really detracts from my gaming experience.

Man, that really sucks! I've only been able to get mine to throttle when I run Furmark and Prime95 simultaneously, but otherwise it hasn't throttled during normal gaming yet (at least not that I can tell... frame rate always stays smooth). I'm sure it's just a lot of speculation, but I'm secretly hoping that the next revision of the Studio XPS 16 comes out soon and fixes the GPU throttling problems, and magically Dell is very willing to replace the 1645 with whatever the new model is :D

lol i certainly hope so. I dont know why mine runs so hot, my room was like 10 degrees last night because i kept the window open and it didnt seem to make a difference. This thing is brand new so it shouldnt be having such problems. Im going to call dell this afternoon, i will let everyone know how it goes.

Yep, same exact problem here Left 4 Dead (1) causes my GPU to over heat (84-85C) in 1/2 hour or less and the ambient temp was 57F?...i too left a window open. My overheating became worse after a tech came to my house to replace a DVD drive and took the heat sink off, 2nd tech visit they replaced the heatsink and motherboard, problem was lessened but is still here and now my fan is stuck at 4700rpm...until they come out for the 3rd time :( I used to be able to play L4D on my 4 year old Inspiron E1505 they replaced...the 1645 i7 ATI 4670 should be able to play it!

You can use GPU-Z to record and what the temps on the GPU

well after talking to dell the guy insisted that it must be a heatsink/mobo problem, even though this laptop is brand new. i decided to humour him/dell and let them come and replace it, but i doubt it will do anything. I dont think ill buy a dell ever again, they just have a never ending amount of problems.

a little better actually. i guess i really did have a somewhat faulty model because after the replacement the temps were about 5 degrees C cooler. they're still not great, still hover in the low 80s while gaming with the cooler on, but they're not at dangerous levels by any means.

Maybe they forgot to apply thermal paste? Also, do you have a 9-cell or 6-cell? With a 6-cell there is less airflow and even with a cooler, still makes it harder for air to circulate even if there is something cooling the laptop, which is why the internal components are still getting to 80C+. If you don't have a 9-cell, try propping up the laptop a bit with the cooler still on and I guarantee you will see no throttling and you will see lower temps.

My 4670 GPU hits 98C with the 9-cell proping it up :(

I wouldn't be too worried about temps in the low 80s.

ya i got the 9-cell and it is propped up on the cooler while gaming. i havent had throttling since i switched to bios A09, so im really quite content with my 1645 these days.

When Crysis-ing with my cooler (signature),

    CPU: 70-ish max
    GPU: 70-ish max

@fred2028. How do you get those low temps with that configuration? That is so surprising to me. I use the nc2000 as well, but on BFBC2 I get 84C Max. Do you use the 9cell on the cooler while gaming (as I run off Ac power only; no battery plugged)? How do you position your 1645 on the cooler? Or do you think the SSD makes that much of a difference in heat output for you? I would love my temps to be around that, what do you do?

(Pardon all the questions, just curious :D)
