Here's a link to the service manual
    http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/xpsm1730/en/sm/sysboard.htm#wp1032623
That should give you some idea of what is involved.

The DCSE service manual has better pictures though, and you can sign up and get a password to access it if you have a customer number.
    Log in and go to
    https://dcse.dell.com/ifr/Portables/
to get the list of service manuals. You can view them online or download a zipped file. It shows how each video card has two heat sinks and two fans that have to be removed. It's not an easy upgrade compared to switching out the hard drive because you have to take so much of the computer apart to get to it.

Lol the way dell talks, the video card upgrade will be free..

They did a mobo upgrade for all the XPS desktop owners, free mobo, and a second option for the free mobo and a huge discount on a quad core CPU.

Well if the 8800's turn out to have a big enough performance gain I might consider. It all depends on the price though ;)

I don't think Dell will sell the parts separately, so don't get your hopes up so high. Also, I don't think that Dell will not make modifications to the laptop to allow 8800M cards in it.

Quick question about upgrading the graphics card..do u think Dell would be prepared to send me the part or would they want me to return the laptop to the factory for the upgrade ??

guys, does anyone know if you can upgrade this machine officially or is it just articles from magazines that said so. The bottom of the laptop case where the vid cards are looks sealed?

I've already logged a formal complaint with dell... and had a service repair..

It took the guy 1hour to get into my laptop.. it now has scratches on it and the keyboard light no longer works.

I asked if they can give me a free upgrade when it comes out.

I won't upgrade if its SLI,I'm really sick of this locked and junky driver crap for SLI already.

Also,as long as its not horrendously expensive, but single 88 or 89 series, yeah,I'll be in,definitely.....just about anything to not deal with sli driver issues

Ist it better to wait & buy the lapop with the 8800 cards than spend more on upgrade & have problems of compatibility
