Is there any way to know the model of the fullHD panel on the L702? I'd like to know if it has good viewing angles at least...

Is this just me, or is the link on the Dell UK site not working, it was working not more than 15 min ago for me, now its saying, this page is not available. Still accessible from the link provided by chelttown though.

Differences appear to be SB proc's and the option of a 3D FullHD screen. Not sure what else. Given this news in addition to Apple appearing poised to announce SB macbooks on Thursday it would *seem* we will see SB Laptops shipping early than predicted.

I didn't think Dell would be able to roll these out so soon. But wow, 1080p 3D upgrade is about $308 USD more...

Yup, it's available in Japan also.
Dell Japan just updated their website.
I've been waiting all day long. It's now 03:20 in the morning, now I can sleep in peace... :D

I wonder if the 1080p on the L702x is as good as the B+RGLED from the L501x.

Just a heads up guys. You CAN get 2 x 500gb 7200rpm drive as an option but you need to phone to order. Only problem is, they want £100 for it !! I was going to order an XPS17 last week (glad I didnt in the end!!) and they only wanted £50 for the same thing. I was told the casing is a different size and so the drives cost more...!???

Anyway, I placed my order today, and hopefully will receive it by March 18th.

    David

P.S. I forgot to ask regarding the backlit screen as this was also something I was after..

All of Dell's LCDs are now backlit. Did you mean keyboard? Lack of backlit keyboard in EU makes no sense to me; the systems are all built @ same location, no?

Sorry, yes you are right... I did mean backlit keyboard !

Also, ive just noticed that I will be getting a 9 cell battery which is risen at the back. Having always had 6 cells, does anyone feel there is an hindrance to this ? I guess the benefit of cooling and having the keyboard sloping towards you is handy.

They are built by at least 2 different plants...it used to be this way:
US units were built in Malaysia
EU units were built in Ireland or Poland

Don't worry about the 9 cell. As you stated helps cooling and actually makes the typing angle quite nice. Only time it isn't good is when you use it on your lap but you won't be doing that too much with a 17" anyway...enjoy.

So I'm planning on buying this laptop (this one or the XPS 15), but i really want backlit, so if i was to order the backlit keyboard from the states, would there be any complications? Such as...

Will the port/socket for the extra wire for the lights be on the motherboard?
    and
Any software issues to expect? Or will quickset just recognize it and start working (?)

From what I know the motherboard is the same for the states and UK and Europe, so the connection is there.
As for the software, It's in the Quick set download on Dell's US site.
As for being able to find the backlight kit, It's like pulling a tooth to source one. I have been On the L701x thread since November and I have yet to see any of the "across the pond" users being able to purchase one from Dell, let alone find one second hand.
A " catch 22" situation if there ever was one.

Any word on whether the 1080p screen on the L502x will be as good as the B+RGLED of the L501x in terms of color gamut, contrast, and viewing angles?

If your set on the B+RGLED then you will probably be disappointed. The Displays with be 1080p but WLED. But it's still an improvement over the 720p that comes with L501x. Viewing angles will definitely be improved as well as everything else you stated. Me personally, I like the WLED but to each his own.

The 1080p display is still B+RGLED on the L502.

You're right, I had incorrect info and should have double checked the specs.
I found some correct info here(Say hello to the XPS L702x). The last few posts help shed some light about the B+RGLED...

    A bit of a knobish question: i'm gettin the XPS L702x from work with a 17.3in HD+ WLED True-Life (1600x900) screen.

If I connect the laptop through a HD cable to a full HD 1920X1080 TV, will I be able to watch the 1920X1080 content in its full quality on the TV screen?

Yes you will get 1920x1080. I use my Samsung 7 series with mine and it is great. That's why I ain't worried about having the 1600x900 screen for general use and then spot on multimedia through my Home Cinema when I need.
