    Hi,

I have a macbook pro that I'm unhappy with b/c it's hot and the fan noise is alot. Apple says nothing is wrong with my laptop. So I had a thinkpad t40 back in the day that was so quiet.

How do the m1330/m1530 fare in this department?

I had a vostro 1400 and 1500 in the past and it is probably average in my opinion in terms of noise levels. I'm not looking for complete silence, but if the m1330 is quieter then I'd be happy.

Hmm, if you think your MBP is noisy, I would stay away from most Dells or HPs etc...get a business laptop like a latitude or thinkpad as they tend to run quiet. I have personally read mixed reviews about the XPS series but none seems to describe them as being "silent"....I am with you about the noise which is why I'm so hesitant to upgrade my quiet latitude. I gave my husband my noisy compaq - he doesn't mind one bit so Noise tolerance is definitely a personal thing. Sometimes I hear the compaq from across the room and it STILL drives me crazy !!!

The xps's will be about the same as your vostro.

I have been using the 1330 for almost a year now.. The fan is quieter than most other laptops, and certainly quieter than a MBP.. It rarely turns on under normal usage, if the ambient temperature is lesser than 20 C.. And when on, it's not very audible unless running at over 4000 RPM, and in a rahter noiseless environment.. Usually it runs around 3K Rpm..
If you want a really quiet nb, I'd suggest you go with a fanless nb with a SSD.. No moving parts at all, at the cost of some performance..

I have been using the m1330 for a month now, and also impressed with the noise level. Under normal day to day operations you cannot hear the fan at all.

Under stress you can hear it, but its not annoying to hear. I also own and d620 and its alot louder when its stressed.

Unless we measure the noise, isn't terming a laptop noisy varies from ears to ears....

I have a M1330. The fans are never audible unless you're benchmarking or gaming. My old PowerBook G4 was a lot louder.

Um so far with my XPS M1530, I've noticed two very important things (only used for one day):

The palmrest can get warm if it is accessing the harddrive alot. Just enough to notice, not enough to irritate.
It is very quiet since Penryns run very cool (even more cooler after I underclocked my T8300) and thus the fan doesn't kick on as much. It only kicks in after I am gaming and set it to max performance and then the laptop's temps rise obviously due to both increased voltage and GeForce 8600m GT.

I'm sure the M1330 without the geforce video runs alot cooler.
