obviously the best one will be

    -the most expensive
-highest number x highest number (second number will be less...) these numbers indicate pixels....more = better.

    Best one currently is

-High Resolution glossy widescreen 15.4 inch LCD(1680x1050) & 2MP Camera

The higher the resolution, the more items you can display at one time. The higher the resolution, the smaller everything is, so text and icons will be smaller, and so will everything else. Usually people will get the highest resolution that they are comfortable with. It's all just personal preference in the end.

I suggest going to a reseller that has notebooks to demo, and you may be able to get a look at some different resolutions for yourself. Also maybe some people you know have notebooks you can look at.

It is a question of the personal preference, IMHO.
Some people can say that 1280x800 is enough for a 15.4" display, others claim the bigger the better is the way to go.

Not necessarily, screen resolution is a personal preference.

You can, but the screen will have some level of distortion. It's best to know what resolution you want, and stick with that.

It's really a personal preference thing as has been stated. Take my advice, and go look at some different screen resolutions for yourself.

No one recommends anything. Like everyone's saying, it's personal preference. Get what you want.

If you have a higher maximum resolution, you can chose a lower resolution if you don't like the higher one. this gives you more flexibility and more options. And everything will look crisper in a higher resolution (personally i sitll don't think its worth the upgrade to the highest resoluiton. It's 150$, well in canada it is anyway not sure about US)

I was just putting it very simple. But yes, looking back it looks somewhat stupid i suppose.

Well the 1680 x 1050 has pretty small text I wear contcts and can read it fine but it tokk a little getting used to. Then the 1440 x 900 will have pretty good size text and will still have a crisp look to it Also the 1440 x 900 will be brighter. For me the 1280 x 800 is a little low text is easy to read but the screen seems less crisp.

My suggestion is the 1440 x 900 just because it is a good mix of crisp screen without too small of text. But you really should go and look at the diffrent screen resolution and see what you like best.

A typical user won't notice unless they've seen and used a screen with higher resolution. The computer you have now what is it for resolution?

    Right click desktop
    Properties
    Settings

now do you like what you are using now? just go by that. The typical computer user probably doesn't know about screen resolution and if they do, they don't care about the difference. I just ordered mine friday. I went with the 1440x900. I know this doesn't exactly answer your question but i would guess the average would be either 1280 x 800 or 1440 x 900.....the higher one offerred is too small (i find it too small anyway and im 15 and my eyes are pretty good) just go by what you have now basically. Im going from a 1280 x 1024 desktop (19 inch flat panel) to 1440 x 900 laptop (15 inch) so its a higher resolution on a smaller screen. I think it should look fine. I'm not an expert on screens though :p

I have no clue what people typically get but my guess would be people get the highest resolution possible because they think it is better or will look better truly I don't know. This isn't based on any fact it's just random speculation.

To get a more educated guess you could call Dell and ask what most people are getting.

If you have good eyes, then a safe bet would be 1440x900. That's one of the more standard resolutions on a 15.4" notebook. Personally I prefer 1200x800.

Okay thank you for the last comments they were very helpful. I'll most likely just go with the 1440x900, seems a safe bet.

Thats what i'm using right now. At first I was kicking myself for not spending the little extra money for the "better" res monitor. However, I recently saw the higher res version in a store demo and I required my glasses to read standard size text. So I'm happy with the 1440.
