Problem: XPS m1530 won't sleep or hibernate automatically (as adjusted in Vista power plan).
My multimedia sharing options are off, nothing is connected in the usb. Sometimes if I put it to sleep, my notebook will try to sleep then just restart! Other times it will automatically wake up from sleep (even tho I changed hardware management to not wake up on LAN or other options.) If I put the notebook to sleep manually then hibernate works automatically?! As far as I know, the problem falls to either Microsoft or Nvidia.
NVLDDMKM.sys is reported as the culprit which is a Nvidia driver. I've researched Google and read countless of threads and there is not one main solution. I've tried reinstalling video drivers, cleaned with driver cleaner, deleted the NVLDDMKM.sys in my System32 folders, reinstalled video drivers...nothing is working![]()
Does anyone know of a solution? Am I the only Dell user experiencing this sleep problem? If others are experiencing this then I'll be happy just knowing theres no solution then to sleep manually.

Did you install the modded graphics card drivers?
-
The modified .inf from laptopvideo2go doesn't help nor does the official dell drivers. I would like someone with a m1530 to test the automatic sleep function and let me know if they experience the same issue because I do believe this problem existed out of the box (brand new system). SP1 didn't solve it either according to threads that I've google'd.

Funniest thing.. I had sleep problems too until i reverted my wifi n drivers back to the stock ones. All is fine now.

I can't get my 1530 to sleep either. When I put it in sleep mode it reboots.Today I get a black screen error message. Then I shut it down. When I booted back up I got a blue screen error message. I let the computer check for errors and the HP screen came up. That's the only driver I've added. I got that on the HP website.
Any thoughts? Is this a tech support issue? -
Funny thing is, I don't ever recall my Sony Vaio AR350e ever going to sleep by itself either under vista. I'm not aware of the HP issue but if your video card is nvidia, then that may be the problem.
Microsoft released a pie chart of driver issues of big named companies and I believe Nvidia was the leader in driver issues. Theres also the class action lawsuit against Nvidia for its drivers in vista.
My XPS only restarts itself from manual sleep if I'm streaming wifi. Never had a blue screen from sleeping.
I really hope that Windows 7 fails and Google steps up to the plate and creates "Android" for pcs. Google can be the new Microsoft although where would that leave Linux and Apple?
(I know that Android is for mobile phones but Google can really make a name for themselves by becoming the next Microsoft) -
Sorry if this is a stupid question. But if nvidia is the problem, what is the solution? I read about software conflicts with Vista; but I thought sp1 which came on my computer, was supposed to solve those issues.

Do you use some cleaner soft like Ccleaner or something else? Maybe the hibernation file is deleted, type in command prompt "powercfg -h on"

No, I haven't used anything on this computer. It's only five days old. I simply d'loaded the Vista driver for my HP printer. Every time I turn the computer on, I get a message from HP that it's finished installing and asks me to hit the finish button. That's why I think it must have something to do with that driver.
My question is... if I want to resolve this, is it a Dell issue, a Microsoft issue or an HP issue? -
I just double checked. I simply clicked on sleep. My computer turned black. Then I got a black message screen saying that Windows did not shut down properly... shortly after that, my computer restarted itself.

***UPDATE
Just tried the 4965AGN driver from Dell, can't believe it was the wifi driver causing the automated sleep issues! Thanks jfdube, +REP -

, well, that and I wanted the nvidia 8600M baaaad, so, splurge on something, skimp on another thing :/ ), and yeah, it's the wifi keeping my laptop from hibernating. I did a quick test turning it off, and voila, it's hibernating right now. Since Dell is a lazy ass mofo, there are no newer drivers than 2007, so if u wanna sleep, you're better off just flicking the switch.

Yup!! The Dell wireless is causing it.
So.... I guess this is a customer service issue? Can the card be replaced with an Intel Card if I ask and pay for it? Or do I have to return the computer? I haven't transferred anything from my Inspiron to this computer and won't if I think it has to be returned. -
I believe that is considered a manufacturer's defect and you should be able to demand a driver fix or a different card, since you weren't aware of the issue before purchasing the computer.
-
I just called tech support. They're replacing my card with an Intel one. The tech guy said he had heard of some problems.
BTW... my sleep issues occur when I try to do it manually and I think automatically as well. -
I recently received my XPS M1530, and had problems with the PC rebooting when I put it to sleep, but not properly, and gave an error screen. I saw the people were having the issue with the NVIDIA driver. So I went to Dell's website, and found that an updated driver (dated 8/18/08) was available. I removed the old one, installed the new one, and have not had any problems.
I was having a lot of problems with various Microsoft Office programs crashing and losing information. But since the update, have not had those problems either. -
So, what exactly is the solution? If it's the NVIDIA drivers, how do I go about installing the modified drivers from laptop2go?
UPDATE: I think I've found another workaround for those with a Dell wireless card involving changing settings for the wireless network adapter.
Open Device Manager (type Device Manager into the start search box) and modify the properties for the "Dell Wireless 1395 WLAN Mini-Card".
Leave the device enabled, but open its properties, go to the Power Management tab, and uncheck the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" checkbox. The reboot problem should disappear.
