i've been debating between these two models. if i went with the xps, i would get the 7900gs and if i went with the 1720, i'd get the 8600gt.

I like the fact that the xps has a dvi port. i like that the 1720 is more up to date (dx10, santa rosa) and has a webcam. I can get the xps at a reduced rate that would make it approx $1900 as opposed to the 1720 which would be approx. $1550.

What do you think would be the best option? I'd use the computer for moderate gaming, internet surfing, photo editing, and watching movies.

    Thanks!

Tough call. If I were you, I'd wait another month at least to see if they update the XPS lineup. If they do update in August, you get the best of both worlds ;) That would be a new XPS with all the modern stuff!

My guess is you'll see up to an Intel Extreme CPU (oddly the highest XPS CPU is lesser than the highest Inspiron CPU) and either an 8700m or 8800m card.

If all you want is a "moderate" computer, no need to get the XPS. If you have some "high-end" requirements, you'd better get the XPS or wait for the updated one (noone knows when though).

It sounds to me the inspiron 1720 would be a better fit with your requirements. $400 extra to spend on gadgets is always nice.

perhaps i'll wait. if only the 1720 had a dvi or hdmi port. i'd don't think i would be questioning it then. the only problem with waiting is the price available to me through aafes (military) would most likely increase with the release of a new xps. right now the price isn't too severe.

    standing side-by-side, a 1710 with 7900gs and a c2d 7200 processor compared to a 1720 with 8600gt and c2d 7300 processor - which do you think would be the stronger system?

also, i plan on purchasing complete care (learned the hard way with my previous notebook). is the xps service significantly better than the inspiron?

    thanks for your input!
