I reinstalled windows xp on the m1730 system, the game panel (this is the little lcd panel above the keyboard on the right side) worked for a bit and now doesn't come on, I have downloaded and installed all the drivers from the dell website but it still doesn't work, any suggestions? TIA

Download the gamepanel software for the Logitech keyboards on the logitech website. That'll get you taken care of.

Thx I went to the logitech site haven't found the right download yet so I will keep looking. The panel stays dark so I am hoping that it is just a software issue I may call dell as I still have warranty on the notebook.

There is a driver on DELL`s site, under the Logitech game panel or something like that.

I downloaded that one and it says that I don't have any hardware installed for that so this is why I am thinking that it may be hardware related.

Then its probably a hardware problem, because that's the exact downloadable I used on my M1730 with Vista x64. It found the panel and installed fine.

Try uninstalling any drivers from the control panel and restart windows and see if you can reinstall it then. Sometimes that works for me with driver/hardware issues.

Make sure your panel is actually plugged into the motherboard? It's pretty easy to get to; all you have to do is gently pry off the panel that surrounds it, pull the four screws that hold the keyboard in place, and gently push the keyboard up towards the hinges. Just follow the cable from the panel to the motherboard. If it's not plugged in, that's prolly your problem.

There isn't any reason for it not to be plugged in I haven't had the notebook apart and it was working originally even after I reinstalled xp, but I will check it when I get home. Thanks

Aah... gotcha. My original assumption was that your panel had never worked since you bought your 1730; that's why I asked just in case some Dell employee accidentally didn't connect the panel to the mobo in the first place.

Failing that, I'd uninstall all the software drivers, both Dell and Logitech versions. After that, run a registry cleaner like Easycleaner(XP) or CCleaner(Vista), do a fresh reboot and install your drivers of choice.

I prefer the Logitech application over Dell's as it provides support for more games as well as comes with more apps like an RSS feed reader... I also like to replace the System Monitor app(turn it off) with a third-party one called ezLCD System Monitor as it provides much more information than the Logitech program.
