Ok so Dell replaced my studio xps 1645 with the xps x521l..
it a really nice laptop but it lacks ALL of the xps lines( m1530's fingerprint reader, 1645 facial recodnition, lether etc).
it has a small keyboard, no touch buttons, and no free slots(half mini card, wwan)
So i can look past some of that stuff but my main probem is the lack of half mini/wwan slots.. with my 1645 i had bought a gps receiver and used it in my laptops wwan. Combined with lojack, my laptop could be tracked if stolen. But now, i cannot place it in my laptop and to remove the 32gig msata would put the speed at a loss..
so here is an idea of mine and im wondering if it could work..
I buy something like the stealth sim card based gps and place it in the laptop and have it run off the in thernal battery. It has an opetion of turning on every 6 hours to check for laptop stolen texts etc and so it could last a year on it built in battery.
what do you think?

You're going to have very limited space in the computer for that. If I remember correctly, there is only a small gap where the front vents are that is free. Everywhere else is tightly packed.
But the item sounds good if it has an internal battery and can be programmed to check every 6 hours. It's something I would do especially given the cost of this computer was almost 2k for me.
Personally, I turned off lo-jack and am just taking the risk of it being stolen. But I'm on a really safe college campus and have my computer registered to the campus police. -
I really think the best solution for dealing with potential notebook theft is
a) insurance (to provide for replacement)
b) drive encryption (for data safety)
c) regular backups of drive
Sure, you MIGHT at SOME POINT get the device returned, but not likely before it was WAAAY stale. There's also no guarantee that the drive contents would be intact, nor the device intact. I really think better piece of mind with is my plan. ;^) -
yes I realize space is limited, that's why I was thinking of have the device run off the laptops battery but hopefully, ill buy an ssd when they get to around 700gb and cost less than 300$ then I could buy a dedicated gps card and flat antennas and place it in the msata slot?
