I'm getting really high-pitched whining coming from my hard drive. Is this a common problem among 1520 owners and if so, do I send it in for replacement or is there another (software maybe?) solution for this?
Thank you.

Are you sure it's the hard drive? The c2d cpus are known for "whining" when going in certain sleep states.
If it is coming from the hard drive, then yes I would contact Dell about it, as it's not normal. And it wouldn't be something just for 1520 owners, as the hard drive is not specific to the 1520, it's just a specific manufacturer.
So maybe find out what manufacturer yours is, and ask them about the whine. -
Actually no, im not certain its the hard drive. I just assumed it was. Any software out there to tweak my c2d to see if that's the cause?

There's RMClock.
Here's one post about it.

Yeah, RMClock and NotebookHardwareControl, and force your cpu to run at max, disable all other sleep states (I think only RMClock has this).
If it goes away, then that's the cause. Tho I'm pretty certain that's what it is, as I've seen many posts about this very problem. -
RM clock is a poor solution. Type in 'hig pith squeal' in the search forums and you will get lots.
Its call piezoelectricity. -

It reduces the noise. It doesnt stop it. On my M1210, it also cut my battery power by an hour and the CPU was always running so...hotter system.
