174.31, although I am not 100% sure it is WHQL as it prompted me to continue during installation, but I didnt pay too much attention as WHQL is something I have never worried about.

169.04 on my 8600gt - seems to be excellent - no problems

I tried using the drivers from the Dell site, as prompted by one of their tech guys (to attempt to solve a problem with my screen that's almost certainly caused by hardware) and it turned the taskbar white! Quite bizarre :)
Mind you, the driver information on the web page showed 8400gs and 8600m, not 8600m-gt... so there ya go ;)

I was using 169.09 and decided to upgrade. I could not find that version anywhere on the site. So i am now downloading the "ForceWare 174.74 Vista (32-bit )" instead. Hopefully it works fine.

Thanks. for me, 174.31 is similar to 174.60. I got 3244 points with both of them in 3DMark 06 1.1.0 @ default setting 1280x1024 no OC w/ vista basic interface.
    but I got an error from rundll32 with 174.60, when I opened 3DMark :(

    My Experience: 174.31 > 174.60 > 169.28 > 156.63 (ms update) > 101.43 (stock)

    I'll try 174.53 and 174.74 . . .

Does anybody have experience with blu-ray and an external 1080p HDTV?

I'm wondering which driver works best with this setup. Some drivers give me a "Driver not supported" when I try to play blu-ray on the TV (even though it plays blu-ray movies just fine when the TV is not connected), and some drivers don't let me output to the TV at 1920 x 1080 resolution.

If nobody has a solution, I guess I'll just play around with drivers until something works.

    My result :

    (169.28) 3DMark 06: 3167
    (174.31) 3DMark 06: 3244
    (174.53) 3DMark 06: 3244
    (174.60) 3DMark 06: 3244 (problem with rundll32.exe)
    (174.74) 3DMark 06: 3241 (problem with rundll32.exe)

I see no difference in WEI and HD playback, but NFS PS works better with 174.xx ;)

So, I stick with 174.31 or 174.53

Wow, that shows just how much the GPU on the Vostro performs compared to the XPS M1530. I have the same CPU and memory on my XPS yet I get a score of 4700 using 174.31 driver with no tweaks.

At what resolution? He has a WSXGA screen, so he might be testing at a higher resolution than you are. And of course the Vostro has DDR2, compared to GDDR3 on the XPS.

Anyway, most stable for me is 169.04. I tried 169.09 and even the 'official' 174.31 but I had BSOD problems with those. I regret even trying them, so I now returned to .04. :) It also scores highest among the three. 3800+ [almost 3900 if I remember correctly, just can't remember the exact figure], compared to 3743 with 174.31 and 3697 with 169.09. Vostro has a different GPU than XPS 1530, even though the name is the same 8600M GT - DDR2 on Vostro vs GDDR3 on XPS.

    No and No

Cant find the graphics link to dell, it does not say anything about graphics driver on the dell driver update that I can see.

Not sure how to get rid of the old drivers, I thought If you updated they would automatically take over and remove the old ones.

Sorry to be thick but I am new to gaming.

Last night the Dell tech support guy did a DirectConnect to my pc, in an attempt to fix my screen problem (vertical stripes of dithering pixels) and he re-loaded the drivers I'd attempted to load for him.

Well this time they worked (no white taskbar), but I'm a bit shocked to see they're 159.xx !!! How much performance, how many bug fixes, how many features will I be losing out on with such an old driver set?

Sounds like your new to computers. ;)

Seriously, go to the Dell website click on support and Drivers & Downloads, choose the model, ie Inspiron 1520, and then download the latest video driver from there - save the .exe to your Desktop.

Now from the Control Panel select Programs & Updates and uninstall the Nvidia drivers and reboot when prompted. Once they're gone run the downloaded .exe file. Job done.

    @RostokMcSpoons: Post your 3DMark 06's score

@neilmcl: Did you replace the modded inf ?

@scythie: STOCK setting 1280x1024 no AA

    yes, GDDR3>DDR2, but I want 256bit memory interface like 9600GT or 8800M %-)

    I'll try 169.04 and 169.09 ;)

EDIT: HD playback works good in every drivers:
    MKV 720p (<10Mbps) w/ CCCP and VMC
MKV 1080 (>10Mbps) w/ CCCP and PowerDVD 7.3 Ultra (has a little deinterlacing problem with haali) CPU: 10%

Tried the 174.60's but started getting the rundll32.exe errors.
Thought I'd reinstall the Dell 174.31 that were laggy in CoD4 for me as the install was a little strange - it sat shutting down for ages on the reboot. Installed without any starnge delays and now performance in CoD4 is back to normal so must have had a dodgy install the first time.

So sticking with Dells 174.31 driver for now.

Go to Support/Drivers and Downloads, go through and select the Inspiron 1520 (yes I know you have a Vostro), and then get the new 174.31 Video Driver for the 8600M.

Using Dell driver just doesn't require using the modded inf like you do from laptopvideo2go. This appears to be true even though you find the drivers thru the Inspiron 1720 downloads and they only identify themselves as 8400M drivers - required no tweaks at all to work on my XPS M1530. Both the lv2go drivers and the Dell download are 174.31 so how they "talk" to the graphics chip doesn't change - you just don't have to use the modded inf. Performance should be identical.

With such a recent "official" Dell push, I'd suggest running their package for 174.31 for the forseeable future for anybody on an 8400 or 8600 chip, unless you're a compulsive tweaker who likes to lurk the lv2go boards for those extra 8 3dmarks. Unless a new game on the scale of Crysis really pushes the bleeding edge on performance or uses some new features later optimizations will mostly be for later-generation (ie 9x00 series) chips. Not saying it won't get a little better here and there, but the benefits will mostly go to the newer gear.

I got about 100 3dMarks going from stock to 169.09, then about another 150 going to 174.31, with no stability hiccups at all. I used the Dell download and did NOT uninstall 169.09 before installing 174.31 and it worked like a champ. Good luck!

Where are you guys seeing the 174.31 driver for the 8600M GT? The latest I see listed at Dell are 156.63.

I DLed the 174.74 driver from lv2go and installed it on my first M1530 and it was fine. When I got my replacement unit, I did the same and it killed Aero Glass function until I rolled back. I don't get what happened. I didn't do anything different in the installs.

The drivers on this page list Video: nVidia GeForce 8400M, GeForce 8400M GS, GeForce 8600M, Driver, Windows Vista 32-bit, Multi Language, Multi System, v.174.31 V32, A06. There is a difference between the 8600M GS and 8600M GT, so I'm not sure if this is the proper driver. Why wouldn't the XPS M1530 page list it if this is the one?

    174.74 here...

Only problems is the login screen and "secure desktop" modes are REALLY slow on battery power. Never had this issue until this driver, but other than that it is all good.

Not sure I understand your concerns...

All Nvidia GPUs since the GeForce 2 use the same drivers. It is called the "Unified Driver Archetecture" (Nvidia's branding). That's why the modded INF works so well as it just adds the lines to tell the driver it can install on the hardware since it is already made to do so.

Dell doesn't post the latest drivers everywhere because they are silly. It is the same with applications. You can search for apps like Quickset or etc. on their site and get a newer version for another laptop, but all versions of quickset ever made are backward compatible with every Dell laptop since at least the I7K series in 1999.
