[WARNING] Be careful with Diskeeper 2008 !

Last night, I performed the Boot-Time Defragmentation. It rebooted my laptop and defraged the MFT with no problem and rebooted again, but I got this message :

Yes, it deleted all of my data on OS partition ( C: )
I'd no time to remove the HDD and recover my data with my PC, so I reinstalled vista and dell factory settings and downloaded my data again and . . .


Diskeeper is good, but don't run the Boot-Time Defragmentation !

 

did run chkdsk first?

Always run a chkdsk before a boot defragmentation--it should be checked by default, but it is not

Indeed, diskkeeper even warns you that you should not do a boot defrag unless you have backed up all your data.

As it is you could still have gotten your data back if you weren't in such a rush to get your OS back up

 

Sorry you have to go through the ordeal, but just a FYI: It sounded like the Vista boot manager got corrupted, you could of recovered from that problem easily by running a repair with the Vista DVD; instead, of having to recover the OS through recovery partition.

 

Exactly. Diskeeper didn't delete any data in your HD, it just corrupted the Boot Manager, which is easily recoverable.

 

at first, I thought it just deleted the BCD, so i put the vista dvd and choose repair -> CMD -> "CD C:" , but i got this:

I also tried chkdsk c: /f (and /r), but it didn't solve my problem
so I went to vista partition window and noticed that the OS drive C: is 100% free

No, it's not necessary. I perform boot-time defragmentation every week on my PC.

Do not experiment with a lot of defragment soft, use O&O Defragment, it's the best!

Yes, there is boot time defrag.

 

As a few other wise voices have said, if you had bee patient, you could have recovered the operating system by booting off a recovery CD. A missing BOOTMGR is repairable and people here could have probably helped wallk you through what you needed to do. Most likely there is at least one Microsoft TechNet online article that could have been found with a simple Google search that would have helped too.

It's likely that there was initial file system corruption in this case and that Diskeeper made it worse. It never hurts to run CHKDSK /F before you do a defrag, especially with a third-party defragmenter like Diskeeper, which really isn't a bad product.

 

I had the same problem with Diskeeper 2008. Ran it on older computer first and when i got home, no Boot Manager.

Yes i was running vist so some file system was probably corrupt but i also ran the CHKDSK before i defraged the system, and the error still happened to me.

Ive got time for a walk through, my new comp is still running fine so i can use that till i get my old one up and running again.
