Well I just got my brand new D820 replacement in the mail today. It makes the same noise, if not worse. I am very dissapointed because I love the laptop but this noise is annoying the hell out of me. I'm going to return it and ask for a refund.

I noticed recently the cpu noise too. RMCpu trick killed the sound but using a 3rd party software...

I think I will just go back to XP. Too many issues.

i do have the same noise from left side somewhere near the hdd :( this is the 4th laptop i using, and the only laptop i found that have such noise.... :( should i call Dell to get it solve? i read from some other forum, the tech guy just told them, the noise is normal, not a problem.

Exact same thing here. Decided to give Vista a whirl, and am running it dual-boot with XP right now.

Whine is significantly more noticeable in Vista. RMClock seemed to help, but I hate the idea of running a program (that affects batt life and possibly temp) just to quiet it.

Another reason to stick to XP, I suppose (even though it is a hardware issue).

But who's really to blame here, Microsoft or Intel? Dell might not have detected the issue when XP ruled on earth.

note that other laptops like the sony sz series dont make the noise and they are running vista. at least no one is complaining about it... so i think dell screwed up

I think the problem is in the motherboard itself. Power manage system in Vista just makes it sound worse than xp.

It maybe an exception? because I've read iBook, HP's Pavillon and some other lappies to do the same symptoms and the fix with the RMClock thing. Just search laptop noise in this forum or google and you'll see.

i have done my homework, since macbook pros make the noise too so its probably not microsoft's fault is it? i think it could be intel's fault since most of the core 2 duo comps use the intel 945 chipset. I think its just a shippment of faulty motherboard

Well, I just went back to XP. The noise still there but less constant. It more acting like a morse code than the annoying constant weeee I had in Vista. It like if it constantly working on something, but very much less annoying. Too bad I liked Vista, but I became too frustrated for the lack of smoothing. Everythings seems unoptimised, that noise thing was the end of it.

same here but the noise would go for like a minute or 2 (...doood.....dooood....)
and then stop, its much less audible than in vista. i think thats what it should be . i didn't expect the computer to run absolutely noiseless
