Hey -- how thick is that laptop? it looks thick as hell.
Also, is that the 9cell battery that is sticking out?
-
I apologize, I forgot all about the measurements.
Length - 13 1/8"
Width (not including 9-cell batt) - 9 5/8"
Width (including 9-cell batt) - 10 1/8"
Thickness (thickest point) - 1 5/8" (including feetpads)
Thickness (thinnest point) - 1 3/8" (including feetpads)
What does doing a review entail? Never done an official one before, but I'd be willing to give it a shot!
-
See above, and yes, that's the 9-cell.
-
usually running several bench marking programs like 3dmark05/06, pcmark05, hdtune, etc. battery life, measurements, screen, etc.
Just read one of Andrew's reviews in the review section to generally see the format we use
if you feel up to it, give Andrew a PM and thanks for the measurements!
-
damn that's thick.
-
Hey, some girls like it thick...
-
solution = sandpaper
-
And some like thick girls.
-
Hahahaha this picture really made me ROFL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hahahhahahaa
-
please?
-
i have to be honest, i've got a small package. i did choose the 1420, after all. but does size really matter?
-
-
Ok I just checked clock speeds in RivaTuner...Looks like we're underclocked here also, showing GPU 400 / Mem 500 MHz...Notebook check says it should be 400 / 600... Hmmm...
-
Love the sleeve.. It looks really cool. Thanks again..
Can't wait for mine, it's in production. -
Can you check the make/model of the HDD and LCD? thanks
-
those vista scores look low to me.
-
has anyone considered formatting and doing a fresh install of Windows XP?!
-
^Thats what i'm doing when my laptop arrives.
-
@b0r
You have an "NBR Linux Team" banner and you purchased a notebook with an ATI GPU. Not exactly the best idea. You didn't get the Broadcom Dell wireless as well, did you? -
does the notebook's hard drive come with one partition where the whole thing is dumped or it is partitioned into more partitions? how large is C: if latter is the case?
-
-
It's in two partitions as is typical of Dells, an "OS (C
" and a "Recovery (D
".
C: has 136GB formatted, and D: has 9.99GB formatted. -
Already talked about the LCD in this thread but to repeat it's a Chi Mei Optronics, and it is the antiglare 14.1 1280x800.
The HDD is a Western Digital WD1600BEVS-75RST0, which I have found was also used in at least the M1710 by doing some Googling. It is a 5400RPM drive with 8MB of cache. This is the model page: http://www.westerndigital.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=264
The DVDRW is an Optiarc AD-5540A, which I have learned is a joint venture of Sony and NEC. This is the model page: http://www.sonynec-optiarc.de/en/exhibits/slim-line-drives/ad-5540a.html -
Something you have to keep in mind is that these scores were those generated first boot before ever even getting to the desktop for the first time.
I don't see how anything installed on the laptop could possibly have effected them. But just for grins I'm going to rerun them now and we will see if they change... -
i believe its actually 4 partitions if im not mistaken.
OS
Recovery of OS
Dell utilites
and that small part that cant be partitioned for bios or whatever its for -
Yes this is true I forgot to open up the Admin tools and check, I'll do that one sec.
-
Ok rerun is complete, all that changed was Gaming Graphics. Previously was a 4.4, now is a 4.5. That probably falls within the error of the system.
-
There are indeed 4 partitions, only two of which are accessible by the user.
They are:
OS, 136.48 GB, formatted NTFS
Recovery, 10.00 GB, formatted NTFS
Unnamed, 2.5 GB, file system unknown
Unnamed, 71 MB, file system unknown -
how many pounds is the 1420 minus the extended battery? From your pics it looks pretty thick!
thanks -
Nice the 1420 looks very slick. I had one on order and canceled it. I just don't need a laptop with all that power atm. I did get a good deal on an outlet Dell E521 Desktop. BTW to the original poster, get a program called Core Temp. It will give you the most accurate readings for cpu temps.
-
I wish they had put the OS on a 20-25GB partition and left the rest for user data. I wish they allowed it during configuring (they do for latitudes). I guess I will need to waste some time with QtParted to get what I want.
-
How are the viewing angles on the 1440x 900 screen?
I had an ASUS that I found to be completely unacceptable, whereas the 1280x800 ones were fine. -
it is not too thick. it is about normal because he is including the foot pads
-
so if you were buying a m1330 with 32gb how much data space would you have lol
-
That is a very good question. I would guess approximately half, maybe a little more.
Certainly could see the advantage of an Expresscard SSD in that case. -
I would say the footpads add approximately 1/8" of an inch to the overall thickness.
In this post in this thread I had a picture comparing an e1505 to the 1420. i would say at the thickest they are equal. I will make an update picture with both sitting on a hard surface to get a better comparison. -
yah lol just thought that would be funny and is solid state the same as non where a 120gb hdd is about 109gb or so left after partitioning and formating so there is a loss of a few gb so yah you only have 12-16gb free without bloatware
-
Yeah, going to have to disagree with you on the wonderfulness quotient of CoreTemp...
-
Ok so about that temperature reading thing...
Left most two are from CoreTemp, middle (lowest) is Speedfan, and rightmost is i8KFanGui. When I post my PCMark results I will also post the temp logs from Speedfan and i8KFanGui. -
It is however heavy Dell says it is - I don't have anyway of measuring it here at home, sorry.
I may get clever over at the supermarket later though as I would like to know.
-
have you used notebook hardware controller yet?
its a wonderful app. i havent seen it mentioned on this board yet! -
Never heard of it. Checking it out now though...

EDIT
Note that there is a special version of this software for Dell computers on the download page. -
you and everyone else WILL LOVE IT.
undervolting made easy, temp monitor, all sorts of goodies.
cant believe you dont know about this! its probably the best thing for a notebook -
Well, it comes down to this being my first personal laptop
-
thats ok, i forgive you
after all you have good taste (my laptop is identical), and you own a goat
-
Here are the PCMark results. For the temp pictures, the highest ones are the peak temps I saw during PCMark, Speedfan was always much lower than i8KFanGui.
-
The XPS M1330 in the review on this site scored 4597 by comparison.
Again, same as 3DMark, I just restarted and then ran the benchmark. Same drivers and everything as last night. And I didn't kill any processes or anything. -
Ok so I have NHC installed now and i8KFanGui and NHC read very similarly in temperature. However NHC can't see my HDD temperature. HDTune was able to see my HDD temperature. Interesting...
I didn't like how NHC changed my brightness immediately upon running the program. But it seems like it has some nifty features. -
Are you going to reformat yours and have one partition? -
phobos just wanted to let you know theres an alternative to taking actual photos for the tests.
press the "print scrn" button on your keyboard
open up paint and ctrl+v (paste)
it'll make pictures more clear not to mention easier to get pictures
1420 Is Here!! Pics Momentarily
