I need to know the CONS of the 1420 laptop. I'm planning on getting it but I've heard that the keyboard is bad, the lcd screen is fuzzy/grainy, heavy, etc.

Would anyone (if you had a year old e.1705 in like-new condition) trade it in for a new 1420? I'm in this situation right now.

My e.1705: core duo 1.83 ghz, 2gb g.skill ram, 60gb hdd, intel graphics

    Get a 1420: core 2 duo 2.2ghz, 1gb ram, 160gb hdd, nvidia 8400m gs graphics

I need a good computer for school, already have a gaming desktop pc. Would you guys trade it?? I like the fact that 1420 is small, but it's only 2pounds lighter I think than the 1705.

You almost have the same spec... except processor and model. How much did you pay for yours?

Remember you can always get a replacement/replacement parts. How long do the batteries on your 1705 last? If it's for school and you already have a gaming desktop I'd get it w/ integrated graphics and possibly the 9cell.

the 14.1" are IMHO the best size for a laptop. They are light enough to pickup with one hand, yet powerful enough as a desktop replacement. the keyboard is like any other laptop and is mostly a non factor.

I'd pick the 1420 anyday over 17" w/ intel graphics.

when i received my dell inspiron 1420 yesterday, i think i made a right decision. maybe the only problem was the squeeking sound, but i dont really know if its only my imagination or what ;D coz when i try to use my lappy today, the squeeky sound is gone and i hope that it wont return. regarding the keyboards, its perfect. im using the keyboards in typing this reply and its really great. about the lcd screen, i think theres no problem with my screen.

It says the 1420 is 6.6lbs... but I'm planning to get a lot of options with it... so how much will the weight increase?

I think my current e1705 is 8.8lbs? Something near that...

It would depend on what the E1705 was like.
Does it have a nice clear screen? Evenly lit?
Are the Intel graphics fast enough for what you need the laptop for?
Do you need the extra hard drive space? (of course you could put in a new hard drive if you do).

The nice clear screen would be an important consideration for me.
Also how quiet the fans are, and how quiet it was in general.

I bought a 1420 a few months ago (end of August) to use for university, and I am completely satisfied. I was expecting to have some problems, and that maybe it wouldn't be of particularly high quality, but I was wrong. I got the 9 cell battery, and I have yet to use it until it turns off, even when I am at school all day (I never turn it off when I'm out, sometimes leaving it in sleep mode for many hours at a time). When typing a word document with the wireless turned off, it says it will last over 10 hours. Using the internet it reads 8 or so. Since you already have a gaming desktop, the specs of it aren't as important. Mine has the integrated intel graphics, but I still play Half-Life 2 and Portal at low settings. I highly recommend it.

Huh? What says? Dell says it's starting at 5.39 pounds: http://www.dell.com/content/product...nb_1420?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&~tab=bundlestab

I'm sure it's more fully equipped, especially if it has the 9-cell battery, but I'd be surprised if it's that much more.
