I'm just wondering this because currently dell doesn't give you the option for the best value 1420 to despec it without the gpu...
I will not be gaming on the system either.

Yeap, the 8400GS will, without a doubt, add heat and reduce battery life. If you are not going to game, I would seriously try and get it with the onboard x3100.

I wouldn't worry though, I have a 8400M GS on my 1420 and I can get 6 hours of battery.

And i meant to say increase heat, decrease battery life, but you got the idea

Is your screen the high resolution model? I was thinking of configuring that to avoid the 'grain' issues.

The most I've noticed is a very gentle low hum which can't be heard unless you're in complete silence or put your ear right up to the fan.
