A 17" is fine. No offense but your parents are retarded :p How is it embarrassing carrying around a top of the line 17"? I use mine at school with no problem. I get lots of compliments. You can do everything on a 17" that you can do on anything smaller, but you have a bigger viewing area. I'd rather have a desktop replacement than a desktop in my room and a notebook for carrying around. Why not one that does it all?! The main reason for buying a 17" is because I have a 17" monitor at home, and don't want to bring my 60+ pound desktop with me.

It won't be embarrassing, but it'll be tough and people will know it when they look at you. And somehow it'll be a tad bit embarrassing because they'll look and somehow instantly attribute it to freshman newbieness. But really if you have a big ass computer, who's going to mess with you? ;)

I think the 17" is a bit much. I see people outside around campus with them in their lap and you can hardly see their legs. And in the classroom it is even worse, if you are sitting anywhere near the front then at least 4+ people can see the screen and it can be distracting for other students.

The desks are a whole other animal. My school is by no means "under-funded," but if I put a 17" on the desk that my 12.1" is on, I wouldn't be able to have any other space for a book/writing pad (yes, some things still require ink and paper).

Having a screen that big, that close, in a classroom environment just kinda reminds me of a kid who sits too close to the TV screen. I wouldnt get anything bigger than 15".

i have the E1505, and in the average class its comfortable to use, but if your in a lecture hall you can find yourself taking up to much space and eating into other peoples room, or if your at those funny little desks your laptop simply wont fit *my E1505 hangs over the edge meaning that i have to use one hand to support it while typing*
my suggestion for anyone taking a laptop to school, cheap and small, i use my medion for college, 14in screen a good 6 years old and runs like a charm. great for notations and can take a bit of punishment
