Uh, unless I'm missing something, you're the one who said it isn't postworthy...

And I think its worthy of a thread.... although most of you are obviously well versed in the laptop world and know everything, there are some out there that don't. -
i'm not the one who said it wasn't postworthy..that is quoting most everyone else on here squeakygeek , i don't care he can vent all he wants! so yea you are missing something. you didn't read my previous post in this forum when i first read it. I was curious went to read..and posted --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
there's no point to this thread..except a guy venting about it..or so all of you say..but yet there are already 5 pages for this thread. things that make you go mmmmm....
so yea i was just quoting the poeple who said it wasn't postworthy
have a great day! -

Well, ORIGINALLY I thought the post was a bit of "much ado about next to nothing," but the MORE I READ ABOUT THE ISSUE the less I agree with that assessment...
That battery sticking out even that extra little bit IS a big issue for two reasons:
1. Because the JERKS AT DELL don't TELL YOU IT WILL or even TELL YOU IT WON'T WHEN YOU ASK, according to at least one poster, which is downright terms for a FRAUD suit (maybe even a class-action suit, and I DON'T think it would be the first against them, if I recall what the State of New York did not long ago with the SAME company)!
2. Because as one person mentioned, 17" laptops, being the LARGEST standard-sized laptops made, just BARELY fit in many bags and cases made for laptops, and that extra bulge would likely be JUST ENOUGH to make the difference in a lot of cases for folks who DO plan to carry their 17" laptop around with them (as do I, on an extended vacation, including, probably, in a backpack for part of the time).
Soooooo, since Dell seems to have decided that hiding the truth from people until it's too late is better than being up-front with them, Eccigiani is doing those who need this sort of info a GREAT SERVICE by starting this thread AND posting the picture of his laptop, and I think they DID owe him a free battery, after having a day to think about it!

Sorry, squeakygeek, my truthful, if offensive to some political comment is gone now, and will remain in this forum ONLY if you don't delete your post quoting it above.

I will say that I did a good amount of research on laptops before ordering mine and had no idea that a 9 cell battery would end up sticking out as I am finding out now on these boards, so this is a useful thread.
The 9 cell sticking out doesn't bother me as much as everyone saying that the vostros batteries wobble, but it is something that people may want to know before ordering that they did not find out already -

someone just posted a picture for the vostro 1400 with 9 cell battery and it is HUGE... too bad i already ordered it with 9cell... i was expecting like less than an inch but it seems tho it sticks out atleast an inch from the picture.
-
If you didn't expect the 9-cell to stick out at all, did you expect the 6-cell to not even fill the battery port?
-
Not to speak for someone else, but WHO KNOWS HOW they make these things??? It's entirely possible they would design (and probably should have designed) the battery compartment in such a way that there's a little extra space inside the 6-cell unit and NO extra space inside the 9-cell unit...
In other words, when you pop out a 6-cell battery unit, it looks just like a 9-cell unit except there's a blank hard plastic spot where the last three cells would be. Frankly, considering the likely demand for a good many of the higher-capacity batteries, it just seems common sense to me that they would have designed things this way -- UNLESS they just RUSHED TO MARKET with this unit to try to KEEP UP with the competition or something, which might ALSO explain why they're OUT OF LCD screens and people are currently being told the 1720s they're ordering will ship in something more than 5 WEEKS!
These are BOTH just examples of POOR PLANNING, if you ask me... but if you choose to ask someone else, I'm certain a good number of OTHER FOLKS on this forum (even this thread) would concur!

I get an extra hour of use out of my imperceptibly-less-sleek-looking computer... AND THEY CHARGE ME FOR IT??
-
Or... in today's climate of NSA data mining, are you just begging for a visit from Homeland Security by using language like that in your post?
Jeff -
Then again, there's no real need for laptops at all, so lets not judge things based on necessity.
I assumed that, if I bought the expanded battery, my battery would be expanded.
-
Guys, you're getting off topic. And obviously someone hasn't been doing their research if any. Of course, assumptions are assumptions.
Please go back onto topic or the thread will be closed, or just your posts deleted. -
this post is getting out of hand..i think. well maybe this post was a good idea..it made us realize not to buy the 9 cell battery if we don't want it sticking out of the back.
-
Back to the topic! -
it is kinda annoying that the 9 cell sticks out, but honestly, if you knew a 6 cell just fit flush in the laptop, what would you expect something 1/3 bigger to do? Is it annoying that it sticks out... yeh kinda. Does it make the laptop less portable... well if you consider the added weight, maybe. I suppose you could bi*ch to dell and get a free 6 cell, but honestly, common sense goes a long way sometimes.
-
I am not sure what this thread is about... there are laptops out there with BIGGER batteries that stick out and are worse - look at the HP 12 cell. It not only sticks OUT, but it also sticks DOWN! Yes, it raises the laptop in the back by about an inch.
Your 9 cell and my 9 cell only stick out about an inch in the back. It doesn't bother me. -
yeh i did notice that on the HP 12 cell. I believe they try to market that as a ergonomic and heat dissipating design lol. well I suppose its true, but I heard that its not great for lap use.
-
How can it look ugly that it sticks out?
on which side of your laptop are you sitting?
I personally, don't know about you, are sitting where the keyboard is and i have to access the keyboard so my screen is in a +/- 90 degree angle.. How hard i look then i can't see the battery!
but its strange that dell does that now. I ordered my previous laptops (currently working on 9300) always with the largest battery, i think i have now a 9 cell 80W battery and that one also doesn't stick out.
The only problem i see with that battery, how does it fit into the 17" bags?? -
how easy can you pull it out?
if it is very easy (and the laptop keeps running when on normal power) then it could be handy to have 2 of them. Use 6 cell when very mobile and use both on an airplane.. -
Hi, i'm sorry to bring back this topic. But how long does this battery make your notebook? (in inch or cm) I really need to know this because i'm planning to buy a backpack.
Thank you
edit: where can i buy a 6-cell battery for my inspiron 1720 seperatly? -
Man, so you get a free battery eh. How great is that?
-
Yes, while I am on the boat that this was a stupid thing to complain about...that's irrelevant, I just wanted to throw my 2 cents in there saying that I PREFER to have it stick out, it makes it a little easier to carry by my side and gives me something to hold on to
-
anyone know the specific weight differences between the 6 cell and 9 cell (for the vostro 1500 is possible)
-
Ummm, I don't have ANY experience with notebooks with batteries that "stick out," but DoubleBlack you have GOT TO BE KIDDING when you say you carry that thing around BY THE BATTERY?!?
If you're REALLY looking for a way to DROP the notebook, I can't think of a better way:
1. Not a handle, so it seems it would EASILY slip from between your fingers...
2. As it's DESIGNED as a REMOVEABLE component, it could easily SLIP OUT.
You've GOT to be kidding... aren't you???

To all the folk who get the "sticking-out" 9-cell battery...
What do you do in terms of a case/backpack/sleeve to put your 9-cell notebook into ?
How much does the protruding 9-cell on the Inspiron/Vostro range affect the ability to put your notebook into a standard case/backpack/sleeve designed for 15.4" or 17" notebooks etc...
Without knowing, it would seem to be a main reason to get the 6-cell (so I can just get a standard 15.4" case, and have a nice snug fit ? -
seriously, i JUST purchased my laptop with the 9cell and was about to order the bbp that fits 17" but the size chart says it fits a maximum 15.5"x11.5"x1.5" ... lo'n behold.. EXACT same size as the 1720. ... but not with the friggin 9cell!
did anyone ever find out what the diff in battery life is? i'm thinking if it's not too late i'm going to get the 6cell if the difference isn't that large.... -
-
The 6 cell is at 66% capability of the 9 cell... probably.
Well, you could remove it when in a bag and then plug it in during usage. -
after talking to 3 different departments i've found out that no one knows the parts number for a 6cell 1720 battery. i was even told they don't sell them apart from the laptop. in any case they are allowing me to change my order.
-
-
^ ^! AH! Thankie for the picture. I'm rather concerned about the protruding 9 cells battery and your thread has helped me despite what others might have said, I appreciate it.
In the end, I ordered 6 cells primary battery and one additional 9 cells for my new lappie which is coming the end of March.
much reguards. <3

I have had a 9-Cells battery since day one I have my Vostro, and it is NOT THAT BIG. I have a targus bag for 15.4 laptops and I put my laptop in there and it will still have about 1/3 of a inch of extra space with the 9 cells installed. Honestly, I must have gotten used to it, because I think my laptop looks better with a 9 cells sticking out the back. hahaha.
-
i could be wrong but either its a scam, your an idiot, or you are the most uneducated buyer ive ever seen.
1720 9-cell battery is HUGE! Pics included...
