I recently upgraded to vista 64-bit with the great guide somewhere else on this forum. After all installations completed successfully (nvidia drivers 174.74 from lv2go), I noticed I had a quite high idle gpu temperature, 70-73°C. I use nTune to monitor my temp.
I had my laptop replaced because it would overheat when playing games (ie the gpu would downclock and the game would become unplayable, this happens when temp is at 104°C). I had a t7100 and now i have a t7250 which is 2.0 GHz. Has this something to do with vista 64-bit (that power management isn't what it is in 32-bit vista?) or am I wrong about that?
Thanks for the help, this is a great community
PS: sometimes I read about idle m1330 temps with the 8400M GS around 40-50°C. What driver can accomplish this and how in the world can I get those cool temps?
specs:
m1330
Intel T7250 2.0 GHz
Geforce 8400M GS 128MB
2 GB Ram
160 GB 5400 RPM HD
Intel 4965 AGN

First off, make sure all your vents are clear. It's possible that you may be blocking the intake vent and therefore the high temps. try raising the back of the laptop while playing a game to enhance airflow. And by all means, don't let it rest on your bed or pillow or any soft material.

EDIT: Ah I didn't realize that you were running an 8400.. those temps are a bit high for that card. Does anyone know of a utility that can adjust the fan speed on the M1530? -
My m1330 GPU idles at around 70°c too.
I figured it was just normal because of such a high specced system in a small form factor.
btw I'm also running Vista x64 on T9300, 200gb 7200rpm drive, 4gb ram, etc... -
Are you running it with a say.... external monitor?

I think it is the drivers. I am running x64 Vista, with the 174.74 drivers. I installed these right after I upgraded to x64, where I was running 169.04. In x86 Vista with 169.04, my temps were fine (around 40-50 C), but with the 174.74 drivers now, my GPU is idling around 70 consistently. I do not want to try 169.04 in x64 because of the great performance I get with 174.74, soooo, even when gaming though, with 174.74, my temps only go up to about 90 C.

i believe the latest version of speedfan should work...........

I'm running x64 and after only a few minutes of uptime (on battery and on one screen with only Firefox running and Aero and all other themes turned off, my GPU temperature is 65 degrees. While doing AVCHD video rendering, even when I place the M133O on aluminum foil to help draw the heat, the temperature climbs into the 80s, and Windows automatically down-clocks everything as much as possible (First 200, then 100 mHz instead of 400 mhZ to keep it from going further.
This is with Dell's WHQL 174.31, which is available for download with the Latitude D830, incidentally. -
I'm glad I'm not the only one...
Can anyone confirm that the temps are much better when you're running 32-bit or am I being too hopeful?
Thanks for the fast responses. -
Mine m1330 also idles a bit higher (5C) with the 174 series. One thing to keep in mind with x64 that you are now using 100% of the CPU as opposed to about 65% in x86. Theoretically, idle should be cooler due to a more evenly distributed heat and loaded should run hotter due to using much more of the CPU. With that in mind, the heat sink on the M1330 has the CPU tied with the GPU...a bit of a bad idea, but it doesn't get as hot as the old P4's did so it should be fine.

Some drivers don't support PowerMizer !
You should check it with GPU-Z ! -
I haven't ran a temp checking app, but my i1520's fan is barely ever on in 64bit so I'd imagine it runs just as cool as 32bit here...

I'm running x64 on a M1530 and I'm surfing and watching a few videos on UTube- my hdd temp is 40C, GPU-56C, CPU 46C.
I'm on AC power and have the 9 cell battery that elevates the back of the laptop and does assist in cooling. -
I've just been playing Guild wars with the settings maxed out (except anti-aliasing: turned off) and with the nTune monitoring ability I noticed a downclock at 104°C. This is it, I'm going back to 32-bit. I'm sure it's not the drivers, not the laptop, it must be the 64-bit OS. I know some of you haven't had any problems with 64-bit windows, but I do.

OT, Firefox support for the fingerprint reader is now available in x64, so I now have the same or better functionality in x64 than I had in x86.
On topic, I think the new 195.12 drivers from LV2Go are a little better, heat-wise, though I haven't tried them in Pinnacle Studio 11 and AVCHD encoding, yet.
With dual screens enabled, running Outlook maximized on my 13.3" and Firefox on my desktop LCD, GPU-Z reports my GPU temp at a pretty steady 72 degrees celcius, with an occasional jump to 74; all at full clocks, GPU core 400 mHz and GPU memory at 600 mHz.
Anybody have any thoughts on this? -
Sorry about my lack of update info... I too have the 175.12 driver installed, but Guild wars forces a downclock due to temp... I'm downloading sp1 now and will give some info on (hopefully) improvements.
@Samuel: Mine idles at 72 as well, and it rises VERY quickly to 77-78 when I Windows-tab (ie activate the aero window switcher thing).
I think those are regular 64-bit temps -
ruben, thanks for the update - anyone else?
ruben, try disabling Aero and see what happens - I, personally, run in Windows Classic (Win2k-like) style, as Pinnacle Studio 11 runs better that way, and, as you noted, you'll probably save a few degrees in temperature, too. -
I just ran nTune on my XPS gaming desktop --20 min tune-- and went back in to check on it and it was in an endless cycle of BSOD--reboot--BSOD..... This is a known problem w/ nTune at times..........
thank god i had just made an acronis backup image because of the above, as it corrupted my ntfs.sys, and I could not repair using the vista install disk, and I couldn't use any other utilities like Hiren's boot disk, etc, as the BSOD occurs right after the splash screen-- totally hosed!!
As I've suggested to others b4, I can use my "Ubuntu Live" disk, boot w/ it and everything is still there-- so I could have copied my documents that way, or with Paragon Media Builder--I have the same option..
But I'll use the Acronis Image as I can restore it in under 25 minutes. -
Tried all that, nothing changed...
I reinstalled the 32-bit Vista Ultimate shipped with the laptop and installed the 174.31 driver... sae thing happening: 104°C and boem, downclock...
I now have the 167.45 drivers installed from laptopvideo2go, they have a very low idle temp: 56°C!!!! They never go higher than 94°C, I'm starting to think they just read the temp wrong, but still no downclocking... Anyone know more about this?
Performance is okay, so sticking with these untill Dell gets back to me.
If anyone knows of newer and cooler drivers let me know please.
64-bit hotter than 32-bit?
