    Hello,
I have a 2 month old refurbished 700m that has been running fine. It's configuration is: Centrino 1.8, 1 GIG of RAM, 60 GB 5400RPM HD, combo drive, and Windows XP Pro. I installed a SMART monitor for the hard drive and about a week ago it indicated that it is in a range that it could fail very soon. I thought it might be the program itself so I installed two other programs. Drive Sitter, Active Smart, along with HDD life. Active smart issued two warnings first:[HTS548060M9AT00, - SMART attribute changed:
    Attribute : 02 - Throughput Performance
    Last checked value : 104
    New value : 100
    AND:[HTS548060M9AT00, - SMART attribute changed:
    Attribute : 08 - Seek Time Performance
    Last checked value : 128
    New value : 100

Next, I received a report from Drive Sitter stating that the throughput performance was at a critical level along with the Seek time performance. Basically, Same as above.

OK, now that is three programs telling me I'm in trouble. Before I called Dell Support (gulp) I ran the full set of tests that Dell includes on the hard drive and it reported everything was fine. I called tech support and of course they said no to a replacement drive unless one of the Dell tests failed. I don't think he really understood any of the SMART info I gave him.

So, do I have a real problem? The only thing I have noticed (subjective) is a slight slowdown when doing disk intensive apps. Unfortunately this could be caused by a number of software issues, too. I was already thinking about upgrading to the IBM Hitachi Travelstar 7K60 60GB ATA-6 2.5in 7200RPM Mobile Hard Drive.

So, anyone with any thoughts or info for me out there? Where I should go? Etc.? Should I just upgrade the hard drive? Any suggestions welcome.

    Thank You!

    Thank You,
    RESSOM
