I have always had Thinkpads. I am not considering a Vostro 1500/Inspiron 1520 instead of a T61. One thing that I definitely will miss is the TrackPoint - I hate TouchPads!! What else am I giving up? Current pricing on the Dells is much better than the T61s for very similar specs. Is the build quality and ruggedness of the Thinkpads much better? What's the weight comparison?

Any other thoughts from those who converted from Thinkpad to Dell would be appreciated.

I converted from an e1505 to a T60 ... does that count?

Let me know if you want my opinion.

I'll admit Dell's are a bit heavier, but they are sturdy and strong as heck and one of my dad's coworkers has a Thinkpad. The only reason they are light is because they use cheap plastic. Case in point: my dad's coworker picked his laptop up one day from the corner and the plastic broke off of the Thinkpad. That simply won't happen with a Dell. They run quieter, cooler, are a bit heavier, but completely cheaper, and the screens are better.

I was interested in Thinkpad->Dell but would be interested in your view having gone the other way.
