For some reason my sound quility in oblivion is bad. It is crackly sometimes and the sounds are bad. Like when on the horse the sound of its feet hitting the ground arent that loud yet other stuff is loud. And when i jump and land it's loud and sounds bad. Also when there are alot of sounds it goes all crackly and cuts of some sounds. I have the creative software audigy thing and some people say it can screw soem games up. The sounds in fear are awsome and there is a option to enambe eax in fear. It's just in oblivion. Im also using 2.1 cyber acoustic speakers.

Look for a game update. I doubt this is a dell problem, unless the drivers are stictly dells. Then blame them.

    Looks like a driver issue.

I got version 1.1 for oblivion. Isn't it the only patch?

You are not alone on this one, Saleen. I got the exact same issues with footstep sounds from any source, whether it's my horse, my char, or NPCs. I suspected there could be something wrong with the audio unit itself (its made by SigmaTel, even if you have the Creative Software edition), because I ran this game on my Asus S96J and it's perfectly fine! Unfortunately I could not find any solution, so I went into the oblivion.ini file and set the FootstepsDistance parameter (under Audio section) to 0. What this does is it mutes ALL footsteps, but leaves sound effects for other sources on.
    This is a real bummer.

Nope, I don't have the Audigy software option, I chose the standard audio which gives me the SigmaTel drivers.

I posted there but will update here too. I had the same type of problem on a desktop that has a soundblaster card.

It turned out to be a driver issue that was later resolved by an update. For the short term I turned off the sound.

oblivion is wonky for my lappy as well (i have the e1705 with the 7900gs). for some reason the game gets really really choppy, even on the lowest settings. the fps was fine, but the outcome/output was choppy as heck. i managed to dig up a guide for tweaking oblivion settings and disaled the sound and then now it runs really smoothly.

    http://www.tweakguides.com/Oblivion_9.html

i disabled one of the sound option in the .ini file and it worked. note that disabling the sound/music in game does not work. it only worked for me when i did it through the ini file.

I've heard others say that disabling music fixes it (see the link for how). To me, that is not really a fix, as the music adds a lot of atmosphere to the game, IMHO.

You don't really need to disable all sounds, that would take away the sounds of spells and weapon swings.
In the Oblivion.ini file, under [Audio] section, towards the end, there is a parameter called MaxFootstepsDistance which has a default value of 1100.00. Set it to 0.00. This takes away only the sounds of footsteps but leaves other sound effects on. It helped my problem of stuttering.
