I am in the market for a new laptop and am definately getting a Dell. I am replacing a Toshiba Satellite 17" and I had nothing but problems. I can't decide between the Vostro 3700, Inspiron 17r or Inspiron 15r.
I will mainly be transporting it between home and office daily and doing work at home as well. Vostro 3700 and Inspiron seem similar but I've heard that the vostros don't have as much entertainment possibilities? Not sure what that means.
I won't be using it for gaming, mainly editing photos (I'm a realtor), doing spreadsheets, browsing the web, etc.
Thanks!

Vostro systems are a bit more durable materials wise than the Insprion line. They also have a more "toned-down" appearance than the Inspiron's that make it good for office environments.
In terms of overall performance, similarly configured systems should perform pretty comparably. I use a computer from the Vostro line's big brother, Latitude, and it performs admirably in multimedia circumstances like websurfing, youtube/flash games, watching videos in WMP. Dell basically uses the whole "Inspiron = multimedia" thing as a marketing tool mostly.
Hope this helps out,

That does, thanks. I see that the inspiron has the optional blueray but I've never used my computer to watch movies so I can't imagine I would in the future either.

I like the looks and feel of the 15R notebooks.

Thanks Bill. I liked the look and feel of the 15r too but ended up going with the Vostro 3700. I just felt more comfortable with the amount of mobility I do with it, maybe a little more durable and will last me longer than my last laptop. Hopefully I made the right decision! I get it Friday, woo hoo!

I think you probably did make the right choice.
The only real 'entertainment' drawback is sound quality which is OK with 'phones or extrernal speakers.
And touch wood they seem pretty reliable; there aren't many 'problem' threads here. -
I feel the real 'entertainment drawback' with vostro is their matte skin - which is not as bright as inspirons clear screen----- but even that is not a drawback as its antireflective and works wonders in terms of mobility because you can type and read text in any light condition....
cheers and congrats for your new purchase, and believe me vostro's/latitudes are made to last a lifetime. Do give us a mini review if possible... -
I've had my old Vostro 1500 for more than three years now and it's going strong, both physically (being thrown around in planes, trains and automobiles) and "emotionally" (reformats, memory and HD upgrades, Windows upgrades....)
my next laptop will definitely be another Vostro....I think! -
Nice! Those first gen Vostro's were based on the Inspiron's of that time period which were infamously overengineered when it came to materials. Sadly, people's desire for thinness won out over sheer durability and later inspirons aren't nearly as solid feeling imo. Luckily the Vostro's have gone in their own direction and are still pretty sturdy!
