Creeping black spot on LCD corner - it's getting worse :(

I have an Inspiron 630m past it's warranty and recently a black corner has appeared on the lower right corner of the LCD screen. When i feel it with my finger it's very hot to the touch

You can see i took it out of the bezel but i can't see any obvious damage or signs of it melting but I am worried it will be a fire hazard

I was looking on eBay for parts but since an LCD costs considerably more than an inverter, would this problem require a new inverter, LCD or both?

That is an extremely weird symptom. Your spot is crawling out of the corner every time you boot up, so I'd rule out a cluster of dead pixels. The screen still looks nice and bright, and the blackened corner looks like there just isn't anything there anymore, so I'd rule out a bad backlight, too. This seems like it may well be related to the inverter, since you describe the spot as hot and it grows over time. The inverter may be doing a poor job of regulating voltage to the LCD or worse may be getting ready to fail completely. My personal recommendation would be to try replacing the inverter first and keep your fingers crossed that its failing hasn't damaged other LCD components. If the inverter solves your problem, great. If not, you may need the new LCD as well.

what happens if you just lower the brightness a little. i would think it woudn't get as hot and would stop overheating the lcd, right?

 

If heat is the problem, then try to clean the laptop, especially near the fan. Or run the processor at a lower setting when it's not needed.

 

The bottom right corner of my screen has a little dark spot too. It's barely noticeable and doesn't grow darker like that, but it's there... (Kind of like the first picture but slightly lighter.)

 

its a lcd issue. it has nothingto do with the heat from the laptop.. it will not go away trust me..

okay this is a different aspect to this problem. i have an inspirion 6000, I just replaced the inverter, backlight, and lcd panel about 1 month ago, as my screen went totally black. The lcd and inverter were refurshibed. Today when I came home and powered on my computer after about 2 minutes I noticed a black burned looking spot on right hand side(when looking at screen) of screen. It was very hot to the touch. I turned the computer off unpluged it went to another room and took the bezel and lcd panel off to make sure no wires etc were burned. All seemed fine so I put all back together and powered on, no black spot. Hey I'm thinking dang I'm good! Took the computer back to bedroom plugged it in, and lo and behold within 2-2.5 minutes black spot was back, I unplugged it, and you guessed it, within 2 minutes black spot is gone, plugged back in here comes black spot again. My husband is thinking power source in computer, and mainly because the screen dims when unplugged due to a lower voltage. Any ideas on this theory??

Sorry for the late reply, didn't realize I had so many replies on this!

I got the inverter and LCD on eBay, I'm in Canada and luckily somebody had it for cheap (well relatively..).

I tried the inverter only and that didn't alleviate the problem, swapped the LCD with the old inverter and that fixed it. I ended up using the new LCD + new inverter cause those things are so darn hard to remove.

Better yet, the old screen was glossy and the new one was matte (I didn't realize it when I bought it) and the matte is far easier to read.

I can't recall but when I upped the brightness it wasn't as prominent. but that likely made the temperature much hotter. It was hot enough to deform some of the plastic on the LCD panel.

 

I've had my Inspiron 6000 for about 3 years. I just had the same exact problem. It was a creeping black burn mark starting from the lower right hand corner. This is the only place I've found the exact problem listed.

Inverters are cheap but the LCD isnt. I have the wuxga LCD... I am currently trying to find an old Inspiron 6000 that someone might just be selling that I could use for parts. Ebay has the LCD's in excess of $225 + Shipping.

Just to add to the description, the screen does eventually shut off assuming its from the heat. It's amazing how hot that spot does get in the right hand corner.

I opened the screen just to see what might be causing it but didnt see anything that would indicate that kind of behavior (I am hardly an expert at LCDs). The screen is a pain in the ass to take apart too and I only went so far.

 

I've had an Inspiron 6000 for three years and a black spot appeared in the corner, just as pictured on the original post for this thread. If you reduce the brightness of the screen, the black spot disappears. The very hot corner will also cool down when you lower the brightness. I couldn't live with that, so I bought a new screen and inverter for $185 on Ebay shipped overnight. Now everything works great. You just have to be careful installing the thing. It took me an hour...... Anyone want to buy a laptop screen that has a black spot in the corner????

 

I have similar issues, I have had my inspiron 6000 for about 3-4 years now. In the last 4 months I have had a few monitor issues come up all of which appear to ahve corrected themselves.
Of course now I have the creaping black spot from the lower RH corner. Before that the screen would blink out for no reason, then suddenly work, then the bottom 2 inches of the screen would get distorted then work.

Now the issue I have is do I replace the LCD for $200 or do I hold off a little bit and replace the entier laptop for $600?

 

I'd replace the whole thing, sell yours for parts? My Inspiron 6000 is only 2 1/2 years old and the casing basically fell apart, the hard drive failed, the touchpad is peeling, battery finally dying, and so many more issues. I gave in and replaced it with a Latitude D630, as I wanted something more durable. The Inspiron series just isn't sturdy enough. If you sit the laptop on a flat surface you can see how it warps. I'm not keen on them anymore after this one lasting 2 1/2 years. I had a P2 Latitude that was still working great, which went to and from work and everywhere else with my Dad, and somehow the thing was in great condition still.

After a few years, it isn't worth replacing parts, as more will fail in time. There is something so much better out there. I'm glad to finally upgrade from a Pentium M 2.0GHz to a Core2Duo 2.4GHz.

I too had the black dot problem - now I just have a black screen - although I can barely make out something on the screen.

Do I just go for the LCD replacement or invertor?

If it's LCD - is it easy to use the old invertor - or should I buy both together new?

Hi, I had the same problem with my Dell Inspiron 8600 AFTER replacing the LCD inverter (60 euro). I had to replace the inverter because I had a very dark screen. After replacing the inverter the screen was good, but after a while I noticed a black spot in the lower RH corner, which was growing! After shutting down, and cooling down, the black spot was gone, but when turning back on, I've noticed the heat in that corner, and a smell of burning plastic... When opening the screen again, there was nothing to see.
But I don't dare to use the laptop now
