I have been looking at many laptops in recent weeks, and Dell and Compaq seem to provide me with the most economic solutions.
I'm currently a second year university student majoring in Comp sci, so a laptop would definitely be handy for writing some simply software, browsing the net etc. I don't need any harddrive space for mp3s because I have mp3 players for that use.
Another use for my laptop would be to do some midi sequencing with my Yamaha synth, which I believe should be fine with any computer, as it has nothing to do with sound (just midi signals through usb cable).
Does a Dell Inspiron 2200 with Pentium M 725 1.6 GHZ, 512 MB RAM, 40 GB Harddrive, 14.1 XGA display fit my needs? How is the quality of these laptops? How are the screens?
I'm not a really picky person (one dead spot or two on the screen don't really matter that much), neither do I care about the weight too much.

I need to know about Inspiron 2200 as well, cause they got a really low price right now (in Sweden), which ends in two days!!! Can't make up my mind if it's the one to go with.

I was looking for a laptop to do pretty much everything. My budget was no more then $700 after all was said and done. I bought this laptop for $730 after $100 Rebate. The follow is what I have in my inspiron 2200.
Celeron M 1.4GHz
30GB Hard Drive
512 RAM (Free upgrade)
15inch Monitor ($50 upgrade)
Internal Wireless (Free upgrade)
1Year Mail-in Warranty
XP Home edition
+ Free $50 Dell Printer
I know I got a good deal
The laptop is great. It's about 6lbs which is not the best of the best but is very good. It's sleek black which is actually very corporate looking (which I am happy about). The battery lasts about 4hrs. This is pretty good actually. It doesn't have the Centrino Chip set which has processor throttling for a longer lasting battery. I'm not complaining, I would rather not have my 1.4M working at 233 MHz all the time.
Once I got the laptop I decided to wipe the drive and install my XP Pro. I was surprised to see that Dell didn't have all the drivers that I needed on there website. I contacted Dell though email and a day later everything was there! So good job Dell!
I defiantly recommend the 512Ram and 15inch monitor upgrades. I wasn't sure at first, especially about paying the $50 upgrade cost on the monitor, but it was so very worth it. It makes the laptop look way more expensive, and it's so nice to look at! I mean if you like to have a huge black boarder around your screen just get the 14.1, but if you want the laptop to actually fit its body size get the upgrade.
The only thing you would every be even a little disappointed in with this laptop is the graphics card. It plays all the games that I like from about 1-2 years ago (i.e. Sims house party) fine, but don't expect high end, this laptop is really not designed for that usage.
I was really researching Dell laptops before committing to this one. I had a budget and I thought I may get stuck having to wait since there would be no way in the world Id buy the inspiron 1000 not having a Mobile (M) processor and the nickel battery vs the L. But I didn't have to pay up the nose. I am very pleased.
Extra stuff I don't have time to touch on, but I will note:
- Great DVD Playing
- Great for running the internet and applications
- Great for mobile users
- Great for school & work
- Great tech support
- 3 USB ports!!
- 1.4M = approx 2.4 GHz
- 1MB Cache Awesome!

Hello,
I also bought a Dell Inspiron 2200.
The computer works fine, but I was wondering if you found some weird pictures in your 'my pictures' folder when you first got it. I have the regular 'sample pictures' but i also have pictures of people and places.
One on the pictures says it was taken with a canon powershot S500. I have contacted Dell and they have just told me that these pictures come from the Media Experience that was automatically installed in my computer. I still have not registered the Media Experience, nor have I opened it.
I was just wondering if you had the same pictures on your computer. If someone could let me know if they do or don't that would be a great help. There are pictures of children 2 girls (one in a pumpkin patch, one in a soccer outfit in front of a house) and a picture of a family, as well as 4 children in front of a piano.
Thank you very much for your help!!

I just bought a new Dimension 8400 and it came with these same pictures. Kind of ridiculous for Dell or whoever to include these...why would I want to see pictures of somebody else's kids? [
