I am looking to upgrade the SSD in my newly bought Dell Inspiron 5370 and as the laptop can take PCIe/NVMe cards I am looking at the new Samsung 970 EVOs and PROs.
But the Dell specs seem to say I can only upgrade to 512GB if I use a PCIe/NVMe SSD.
128GB/256GB M.2 SATA Solid State Drive
256GB/512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe Solid State Drive
But would they really limit the capacity? I mean if I put in a 1TB PCIe NVMe would it still work without causing problems? Or am I misunderstanding those specs?
The specs are here:

Thank you.
Edited to make my question clearer.

There is no hard limit in terms of storage space on either SATA or nVME, you can put whatever size SSD fits.slimpower likes this.

Dear Aivxtla, Thank you for your feedback, you have put my mind to rest.
Not that it is important, but why do they list a limit if there isn't one? -
Those are the configuration options that Dell offers for that model, its not a limit, its what you can choose to buy from Dell, you can buy the laptop and put any NVMe drive that you want in there.

Thanks for explaining, senso. I thought it was like the RAM where there might be a limit. Thanks.

Currently RAM is hardware limited, due to the maximum size of the sticks, the biggest that is available is 16GB DDR4 SO-DIMM, so with 2 slots, max is 32GB, and 4 slots max is 64GB, the CPU's are also limited to 64GB RAM maximum

I am pleased to have learned that. Thanks, senso.

Moreover: SATA slot or PCIe slot (for ssd-nvme) are the same?
Or is there a slot for SATA ssd and a slot for PCIe ssd? (in Inspiron 5370) -
There's only one slot, but according to the specs I can put either M.2 sata iii SSD or the M.2 PCIe SSD. I have not yet bought the 970 EVO as the reviews I have seen with regards to video rendering suggest that there is little difference in speed between a M.2 sata iii SSD and the NVMe PCIe SSD despite the faster read/write speeds of the latter.silgiolo likes this.

Very interesting! Thank You.

Interesting; any link?
And moreover: is DELL 5379 (not 5370) capable of NVMe drives? -

Quit posting your random BS. The 5370 will only support a m.2 drive, not a 2.5" drive. So far I'm not impressed with your postings. -

I couldn't imagine it not supporting NVMe. I'd put money on it.silgiolo likes this. -
I've got it (Dell 5379), but I don't understand if it has got or has not got a NVMe slot...

Right, I understood your question.
The answer is I don't know for sure but bet it would support NVMe.
It comes with a SATA m.2 drive, but I bet it would support a NVMe m.2 SSD. You could open it up and take a picture of the port and we could tell for sure, but searching online doesn't say if it does or does not support the NVMe protocol.silgiolo likes this.
