ok, tried booting up Media Direct last night (explaining how it all works to my father) when i found that instead of the Direct screen it booted into the first time i used it, it came up with a blank semi-blue screen.. after leaving it for 10 minutes or so, i ended up having to exit by forcing it to power down ( holding the power button till it powered off), i've not done any installing of windows, touched any partitions or anything like that, any ideas on what could have gone wrong with it?

the only thing i can think of is that i defragged the harddrive a couple of days ago, using the windows defragger.. could that have been the cause?

and my last question is, is there any way to password- lock Dell Media Direct? it seems a strange oversight that my computer can be passworded, locked to a desk, have a fingerprint read on it etc, but all pictures and video on the machine can be accessed at the push of a button... i have sensitive files on my computer that can be accessed through media direct, is there any way to prevent direct being used by anyone unless i put in a password, or is my only option to remove media direct / store all the files in an unreadable format?

I dont think there is an option to password protect MD. You're better off getting rid of it.
I use it, but I only use it within Windows itself. I got rid of its 2GB partition etc so it wont work from boot. Too many issues with it IMO.

    Hi!
    I got rid of it's 2gb partition also - space ;) :)

Personally, I avoid using Media Direct, as when I first got it ~ it caused a few problems for me at start-up (and when using).

This is probably not the answer you were looking for..but just my own opinion on Media Direct. ;)

It probably works for others, but just didn't work for me

Yeah I dont use media direct at all , a waste if time . Vista doesnt like it all. Even using generally caused conflicts with vista. Also while vista was going into hibernate or rebooting cant remember which I accidentially flicked the media direct button. After that windows vista got the BSOD flash then rebooted again and again before I system restored it back.
So now I stay away from it.
A work mate had partition conficts with theirs. Her sons turned on media direct while vista was in hibernate - not a good idea. I fixed it with some fiddling.
