Hes running a Linux distro on it.

Seems to be a very sensitive touch pad

Mine I have to go over that "ridge" before is it picks it up.I guess it could be offset but I doubt it.
I guess you could load a different touchpad driver from linux and see if that works.

Does anyone know where in the kernel I can enable the screen brightness adjustment?

Hey guys I have a Studio 1558 and I have a problem with it. Sometimes randomly, the sound will just cut off, and if I try to use a program that plays sound, then that program will freeze. I don't know what triggers it, just happens randomly.

I used to have a Studio 1557 which had the same problem, but I updated the BIOS which seemed fix the problem. With the 1558, I think the problem has started since I updated to the latest A12 BIOS.

Anyone else have the same problem?

No idea, but I am glad I am still with A11. You can always go down to A11 and see if helps, pls post if does.

I'm experiencing problems with my Dell Studio. After some time of use (usually an hour or more) the CPU usage climbs to very high % (I've seen it go to 100%). The laptop becomes unresponsive and sluggish.
I've also noticed that this phenomenon is accompanied/caused by overheating of the laptop. If you touch its bottom it's extremely hot and the temperature in Core 1 and Core 2 goes more than 90oC (!!).
This has become annoying because I have to stop my work try to save and then let it restart.
I didn't experience this from the start, it has deteriorated in the few past months. I've also had some instant shut downs (no more than 4-5 in a year).
Does this ring any bells to anyone? Is there a solution for it?

Radiators are blocked by dust. Make sure you not covering the air intake at the bottom.

I don't think there is any dust. The vent is the one at the left corner, right?
I don't know if internally there is dust, but the vent doesnt seem to have any dust.
I would really like to avoid getting a cooler, it ruins the portability.
I think that overheating and cpu drain happens usually with the browser open (especially with pages having flash like FB).

Has anybody had any problem with battery? My lappy just got 1 years old and HWMonitor reports that battery wear is 67% :S Is there any way I can renew it with software?

You can't renew it with any software. The only solution is buy new one. Batter capacity will start degrading as soon as they leave the factory. In your case, it degrading faster. A couple of factors can caused it, for example heat. Li-Ion battery which usually use in notebook battery are sensitive with high temperatures.

Code 10 error means drivers for that hardware is not installed. You can upload the picture at imageshack.us or photobucket.com. Then post the link over here.

Actually not true. After some digging I stumbled over the battery re-calibration story. Went through it and now my wear level is only 42% vs the earlier 67%. I did it multiple times in a row and it really worked because the battery life has increased noticeably.

I knew that 67% over 1 year period just isn't normal. Re-calibration helps!

Yes, that is true if the battery controller report wrong wear level. Re-calibration will help. However, if the battery cell already degraded, you won't be able to resurrect them at all (which actually I'm referring to in my previous reply). Actually 67% wear level in one year can happen. It depend on the battery cell quality & other factor as well. Notebook usually use Li-Ion battery. You can find a lot of information on the Li-Ion battery.

Wait what? Studio 1558 had 2 motherboards, one with DGPU soldered onto the motherboard and the other just has integrated graphics.

I hate this laptop. I have had it for over a year...constant video problems causing the laptop to crash, problems with it running slow and sluggish, and now something is causing the fan to run constantly. After I first bought it Dell replaced the motherboard and updated all the drivers. Now after nearly a year I hate this computer.

This laptop runs to hot fact!!!

Has anyone modded this laptop in any way, or have you seen a thread with someone doing it? Am thinking once my warranty is up getting most of the parts replaced and starting a fresh with a modded laptop, ie CPU cooler or even cutting a large hole underneath the laptop and sticking a vent grill on as well as a cooling pad

Is there a upgraded fan you can buy for better cooling of the CPU?

Any advice or info is appreciated! :)

I just swapped my mechanical 500gb 7200RPM drive for a 240gb SSD and that solved the overheating issue for me. Mine was getting so hot on the touchpad it was unusable. Now it stays nice and cool :D

Just an FYI, I just installed the max 8GB of DDR3 RAM. Picked it up for $34.99 at Micro Center. It was $5 off and it's re-branded ADATA RAM. Slightly lower CAS but it's decent, basic RAM at a great price.

    CPU-Z before and after...

    Hey,

ive got a 1558 m540 2.53 i5 6gb ram and a 500gb harddisk. I want to speed things up with a SSD. Has any one used a intel 330 or intel 520 120gb ssd. Have you had any compatibility issues or bsods freezes or any of that annoying stuff. I really need some user reviews because i cant find anything useful on the net.

    Thanks guys

    Fan noise issue

Laptop just completed its 3 years with not that good experience.
This is the second time the fan is going mad and creating lot of noise. Motherboard (BIOS gone), screen(dead pixel) has already been replaced. Not at all a good experience with Dell products.

Just to keep laptop alive for some more time.
Can anything be done to reduce the fan noise. It's so annoying. Even a single browser open and no other app make the fan start and noise.

    Thanks

Hmm that's weird. I have the exact same CPU as you, 9cell, 5450m, ... with what I know is a worse cooling system than the 1558 (if I'm not mistaken they were sold with i7 quads?) And I don't get this annoying fan noise you're talking about. On a good day and a somewhat cool room I could run it passive (fan stays off) with just a browser open. If it's been 3 years then maybe it's time for a repaste? Cleaning out dust? Copper shim mod is an option for these? I'll be hitting 3 years on my cheapo 1564 (and 19000 hours of runtime) soon and I'll add another 2 years on it before I'll consider replacing it.

When the machine is under full load and turbo that's another story, that has the potential to drown out planes taking off over your house.
Maybe something else is stealing CPU cycles?

That's all I can think of for now.

I'm probably going to try to resurrect my 1558 next weekend. IIRC, it's a i7-720, w/ 8 GB of RAM and the discrete graphics. It stopped booting, so I replaced it, and took the SSD in it to my current machine. It currently posts, but then dies shortly after - I'm thinking overheating, even though the fan seems to be pushing some air. I have a replacement fan/heatsink unit I got off eBay, so I will see if that helps. It came with 5 bent fins, so they are sending a replacement.

I don't really need this machine to run (I have a two other desktops acting as media server and client, plus my laptop), but it would be nice nonetheless, so I am hoping all I need to pickup now is a 2.5" drive.

Bringing this thread back from the dead because I have a friend's dead Studio 1558 here that is driving me crazy.

So this laptop will turn on, sometimes reaching the DELL bios splash screen, then turn off.

Sometimes it shuts off immediately, other times you have 3-4 seconds until the splash screen shows.

I've cleaned the fan and air ducts, I've taken it apart to check for any loose connections, I've replaced the power button...

    What is it I'm missing?

    Thanks in advance!

I have the same problem with my laptop and I spoke to a really decent guy at a computer repair shop in Norwich over the phone this week.

I'd done some research and looks like the GPU is fried on the 1558, it's a common problem. Got a quote from a place in London for £200+vat minimum to fix the problem which I thought was steep.

My Norwich contact charges £45 for the same service and explained how it is. Is called a reballing process where they heat the soldering and allow the molecules to reestablish bonds where broken. It's not guaranteed to work which is why he runs a book fix no fee service. If it does work, which is likely, then it's also likely to fail again down the line. They only guarantee 3 months for this very reason.

They also offer the motherboard replacement if they can source one, this is the only alternative as the GPU is soldered to the motherboard. As the mobo itself is badly designed, its sure to eventually fail again.

He advised that instead of spending money with him to fix if, just cut my losses and buy a new machine. I can't help but think, however, that for £45 I could have it working again.

Think I have the same problem with my Studio 1555, it only boots when it's warm (by leaving it on for a long time), so I think a ball under the GPU is cracked and heating it up connects it temporarily.

I wonder, were Studio 15s ticking time bombs in this regard? Seems like a lot of them with the same issue. If this was Apple rather than Dell there would be news of this.

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy with the 5 year life I got out of this.

Yes, they were failures waiting to happen. Every one of them is affected. Its not a manufacturing defect, its a design flaw which ultimately affects every laptop designed to that specification.
