Okay, so I decided to do a clean install of Windows 7. What do I need to install to get the little windows that pop up when you press the media keys? (The ones that let you know how loud the volume is, etc.)
-
I think you need to install Dell Quickset?
-
Yep, QuickSet is what you're looking for. It has on-screen indicators for volume/mute status, display brightness, Caps/Num/Scroll Lock status, WiFi/Bluetooth, and keyboard backlight status.

when can I register for the windows 7 upgrade program? Once I place an order or when I recieve the laptop
-
nevermind i need the service tag

thats nice to know, I ordered around the same time as you...my ship date is 7/27. I hope it changes like yours. -
ordered my studio 15 on 7/3 and it says it shipped yesterday. however, there is still no updated information on the fedex website, all it says is that the electronic info has been received. however, the estimated delivery date is friday....hopefully this is true!
-
Wow Hurley... no delay for you.... crazy.... Nothing like the 20+ days i've been told every time...
-
Keep hangin' there stabilo, i'm sure you're gonna get yours soon! -
Also, is it possible to get two finger scrolling? The Synaptics website says it's possible, but I can't find that option. -
You should get yours by tomorrow. Normally once it's in the area, it will be the next day. Can't wait to hear how you like it. -
I took some pictures of the Edge to Edge display. I had to use flash to get it to show up, normally you can't see the glass like it shows on the images. Its just all black and gloss. On these pictures however it stands out. Without flash I can't see them at all. I don't see those dusts either lol
This is my first edge to edge display and I gotta say I prefer it more over the standard. Cleaning it is a lot easier, just wipe the whole screen, no worries about dust getting lodged between the screen and frame.

Doesn't really look like it adds much to the screen......???

obviously some people dont know what an "edge-to-edge display" is. say edge to edge glass instead. I dont see the point in this being any better or worse that the standard build. It certainly doesnt add more work space....
-
It offers a bit more protection for the display and makes it easier to dust.
-
Anyway, the reason of it being offered is cosmetic. People like the way it looks, that's why Apple and HP started doing it. -

Thanks!

how many system fans does the studio 1555 have?
-
Just the one. It's fixed at the end of the copper heatpipe and blows out of the rear exhaust port.
-
[Massive picture removed, better picture below] -
-
Fixed. Interesting to note that the 1555 has two heatpipes instead of one. Instead of having the (presumably) CPU and GPU connected to the main cooler via heatsink and the Northbridge with a standalone heatsink, the 1555 has all three connected to the main cooler.
-
Actually, the layout is pretty similar underneath. On the 1535, the CPU and northbridge were both under the copper heat pipe, while the GPU was under that aluminum block. The 1555 heatsink is virtually the same, except the GPU's aluminum block now has a copper heat pipe as well. Everything is still positioned the same, though.

I'm thinking about getting a Studio 1555 from the Dell Outlet to replace my Inspiron 9300 that I've had for 3 years already. I have a question before I purchase one though. I've heard that there are a lot of compatibility issues with the 64-bit version of Windows Vista. If I opt for the 32-bit version will I be able to upgrade in the future to 64-bit if I want to add more than 4 GB of RAM? This is a big issue for me because FireSTB does not currently work with the 64-bit version of Vista and I do a lot of highlights for Lakers games that require the use of that.
-
You can get it with the 32-bit version and install 64-bit later, but it will require a full reformat and fresh install; you cannot "upgrade" it on top of your existing 32-bit version. But it's nice, because your existing license key for 32-bit will work with 64-bit as well, so all you will need is the 64-bit installation disk, which Dell can provide for you.
So, get the 32-bit since you need it now, and go for 64 whenever you feel like it.
Also, the Cavs are getting Shaq...enjoy it while you can, Lakers. -
how long do the 1555 stay "In production"? I ordered on Monday. I was hoping to get the laptop delivered by next friday (july 24th) even though my status says august 3rd. In the US by the way.
-
Oh Out of curiosity... what are people's "vista experience scores"? -
5.1 in Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 32 Bit
4.9 in Windows 7 32bit -
whats a vista experience score?
-
Alright, so I just got a studio1555 today.
After a rough start and a format of 2 times; I finally can say that the studio1555 is really really nice.
The keyboard is amazing; silent, yet u can feel the "push" of the keys. Everything seems quite fast (after a format to remove bloatware)! -

-
Yes I chatted with dell online and they sent me the 64 bit disc the next day
-
-
4GB ram
ATI HD4570 512mb
700p screen
backlit keyboard
generic rest -
YAY! It's about time... haha
What did you get for a vista experience score? Like the breakdown? -
haha, it's funny you mention that; cause I just did it
5.0 overall (don't know how that works, as 5.0 is lowest score out of the breakdowns)
processor 5.4
memory 5.9
graphics 5.0
gaming graphics 5.3
Primary hard disk 5.6
Btw, my screen is LGD7001...so i'm guessing it's not samsung? -
hum... didn't expect the graphics to be the shortcoming... haha oh well... still good marks
I was curious to see what my computer would be like... bit below yours... probably a 5.1 or 5.2 processor... 5.5 memory... 4.9 graphics?.... something like that... Dang I'm anxious.
How is it going with the new system now? -
there is not chat option here in india..
have mailed them..no reply after 24 hours..
i have one more Question.. Does they charge anything like tax/shipping fee to send out the disc's ?? -

Received my "scratch-n-dent" Studio 1555 today. So far I've only found one blemish which seems to be residue of an old sticker, which should be easily removable. Miraculously, my "chain-link black" lid isn't chainlinked at all...it is a pure black matte lid. It has the same rubbery coat found on the colored Studio lids. The interior is identical to that of the colored lids as well. Very pleasant surprise. Additionally, this can be used as grounds to return it with no restocking fee if it comes to that. I have a feeling my subwoofer is disconnected as I hear virtually no bass.
I have a question about the headphone jacks on this notebook. When I first put in my headphones, I was pleased that there was no hiss. However, whenever sound is produced, there is a very soft but noticeable hiss which disappears after several seconds of silence. This is the case with both jacks. It's probably something you wouldn't even be able to hear with speakers or in a noisy environment, but I was wondering if someone could test this out for me to help determine whether or not mine is defective. The best way to test this would be to plug in headphones (in a quiet room), make sure that 30 seconds go by without any sound, play a short Windows sound, and listen for hiss.
Thanks a lot -
Wow, how did you end up with a matte black lid? I didn't think that was ever an option.
My girlfriend's been holding off on a Studio 1555 purchase for that reason; she wants plain matte black, not the Chainlink, and she doesn't like any of the colors or artist patterns.
The subwoofer isn't very loud. You can only get so much out of 3 Watts in a one-inch diameter. If you seriously think it's broken, though, play some music and put your ear up to the vent underneath the right side of the palmrest; that's the subwoofer. If you can hear sound coming from it, it's working.
-
I didn't think that there was a Matte black 1555 either.... you sure you don't have a 1537??? What are the specs?
