Well i would love to see the AUO then... because the LG is top notch. Great colour and angles. It's also super bright (at least compared to my old WSXGA+ at 185nits.) Even when plugged in, I only use it at about 1/3 full brightness... crazy I know... but my eyes haven't adjusted to something THAT bright yet.

I'm a bit skeptical about the reports of the 1080p AUO being better than the LG, because their descriptions weren't very accurate. When I asked them for more detailed description they only talked about viewing angles and brightness, which aren't that important in my opinion. Contrast and color are far more interesting imo.

    Can a T6400 + 4500MHD play 720p and 1080p MKV movies perfectly fine?

It can, but it will be with 40%-50% (estimate) CPU load with DXVA disabled.

Enabling DXVA will create lower CPU load, at the expense of image quality, especially in fast moving action scenes.

4500 HMD + DXVA has problems with deblocking, as discussed in this thread:

A quick question about the Studio 1555 - I have one on order which is due to be delivered tomorrow but I wanted to ask if the BIOS has the auto power on mode? I have this on my Inspiron 6400 and it is so handy for scheduling early morning tasks and have the Laptop boot up 10 mins before hand.

Did you use a cd for playback, or just random mp3s which could have been encoded with differing volumes?

Only thing I've noticed so far is that there's a pretty loud, but not entirely constant static when I use it with my IEMs. Kinda sounds like distant rain

Is this a mode you can set directly in BIOS? I didn't see anything there.

Considering all this talk about screen types, is there a way you can find out which screen you have other than in device manager?
I installed windows 7 without checking it in vista, and now it just says generic PnP monitor.
Are there even different kinds of 1080p screens?

Yes, it's in the Inspiron 6400 BIOS under Power Management \ Auto On Mode. Would be great if this feature is in the Studio 15 (1555) BIOS.

I don't think it will be. Wake on LAN will probably be available though, but unless you are hardwired into a network this is pretty useless.

It will play very well but CPU load will be higher than with an ATI card.

Right click the Generic PnP Monitor and then click Properties.
Under the details tab, select Hardware ids from the drop down menu.
This should tell you what brand your display panel is based on the prefix.
Something like MONITOR\AUO10ED. As you can see, this would be from AUO.

Yes, dell uses different manufacturers for their display panels. For the 1080s, most common are the LG and AUO.

I have the AUO 1080 display, I'm not sure how it compares to the LG, as I don't have one to do a side by side comparison.

I have not seen the exact LG 1080p screen on the 1555 but I can say that the AUO 1080p screen is not perfect when it comes to color correctness. It does have the best viewing angles I've seen on a LCD screen, but I could care less about that on a laptop. All of the LG LED screens I've seen have much better color correctness than the AUO on my 1555. We have a few LatitudeE6400s at work with LG LED screens and there colors are much better than my AUO screen.

I'd compare the 2 by saying the colors on my AUO screen look like colors under a cool compact florescent bulb and the LG colors look more like colors under sunlight or under a standard incandescent bulb. The color blue especially does not look natural on my AUO screen.

If the LG screen on the 1555 is like the ones on our E6400s, I'd much prefer it over my AUO.

Make sure that you either have AHCI drivers slipstreamed into your XP install disk, or that your SATA mode is set to ATA rather than AHCI in the BIOS options.

I just asked a Dell rep about the insane UK price of the 1080p screen compared to the USA price and he just put the phone down!

I'm about to try again, anyone have any tips on getting a discount from these guys?

EDIT: Just inquired about this spec:

    Core 2 Duo P8600
    1080p
    Colour Upgrade
    4GB Memory
    500GB 5,400RPM (any 7,200RPM)
    Blu-Ray Disc
    6 cell Battery
    512MB ATI 4570 (maybe 256MB)
    Intel WiFi Link 5100
    Backlit Keyboard
    4 Year In-Home Warranty

    Total: £924
5% is the best he could do which would be £877. Still think I could get more.

btw I'm not cheap, I'm just on an extremely limited budget at the moment! ;)

I guess it depends what you want to be gaming? Crysis? WoW? The Sims?

I have The Orange Box, and on HL2: Last Coast with all settings maxed, AAx2 (or x4, don't remember), no AF I managed an average 72fps. I didn't try with any AF. But I play HL2 and TF2 with every setting (including AA and AF) maxxed and it runs smooth.

EDIT: Also, the consensus around the boards is that the 512mb version isn't worth the extra money.

I pulled the trigger on this deal but it looks like it was too good to be true.

I received the laptop yesterday and low and behold it has a 720p display and not the 1080p display that was shown on the Outlet website. The Online Chat for technical support shows that my order should have the 1080p display. I call Customer Care and all they show is that my order has 720p.. I have an acknowledgment e-mail and confirmation e-mail both saying 1080p, but since my order on their end shows 720p that is all I can get. After much discussing back and forth the best they could offer me is a full refund for my purchase. Aye.

I don't suppose there is any way I can purchase a 1080p display is there? Other than the 720p display it is a nice laptop.

If your confirmation email and everything else say 1080p, then you should get what you paid for. Take advantage of the Unresolved Issues form and tell them what happened. This will put you in touch with a senior support person who will take charge of your case and work with you to reach a solution. That's how I ended up getting my replacement laptop from my old 1535 that was plagued with issues.

Definitely not Crysis, anyone tryed CoD4 and had any problems? That may sound like a stupid question, but oh well. I hear it doesn't have a very high frame rate at med/high

also, how long does it take to boot up?

Hey it's me. I bought my Studio 15 on Monday and I'm kind of scared it will arrive with problems. What are the chances of that happening? If somethings wrong, what can I do? (Canada) If I have to send it back, would it be possible to get a UPS guy to pick it up for me in Canada? (without paying shipping or insurance)

Actually, you'd be surprised how well Crysis performs. I have it running at 720p (1366x768) with all settings on low except for textures and volumetric effects, which are on medium. And it plays quite comfortably.

    Hi again

After some weeks after I sold my new Dell 1555 , yesterday one of my friends show me his old Dell Studio 15 (the one with touch multimedia keys) and I was amazed
-Great keyboard, no flex! at all....
    -Touch multimedia keys
-It has 1080p screen an it was great, better viewing angles
-Led indicators for Blue Tooth, Wifi,

    Conclusion:
New Dell Studio is much worse than older versions, they kept the look and shape but is not exactly new model...much like a low cost Studio 15

    Regards

Strange, I heard on multiple forums that the new studio 1555 had less flex than the old one.
Well, that is plain personal taste. But unfortunately, according to forums, Dell had too much technical problems with those touch bars. Probably the reason why they got it replaced by the function-key-combo-system
The previous version of the studio 15 could not have a 1080p screen... Because, first of all the screen was 16:10 ratio an second the highest resolution you could get was the ccfl (=non-led) 1600 x 1200 screen. If I remember well, the 1440x900 led resolution screen of the old studio 15 was top class.
This is the only critic I can agree with. But I can imagine that they are becoming useless. With the coming of SSD's, you won't even care about hdd activity anymore (except if you like to squeeze everything out of your hardware...). Internet is everywhere nowadays and if connexion drops, you'll notice in your browser or whatever (no need for a status light...). The only status light they could have left is bleutooth.

And as Wilco16 has already said: what was so bad on the new studio 15, that made the old studio a masterpiece in your eyes?

Krazyeone, you say it is like a low cost 1535, but what you are not considering is the better screen options, updated chipset (meaning 8GB of 800MHz RAM can be used amongst other things) and the better GPU (which is a lot better than the old 1535).

The display on the new Studio 1555 can be upgraded, just as it could on the 1535 (as it has on your friends). If you did not make the right decision on the display, well you can hardly say that is Dell making an inferior machine....

It's not like a low cost anything.

The touch multimedia keys were a problem area for the 1535 machine, so Dell opted to get rid of them. Wise decision if you ask me. And why do you need an indicator light for the bluetooth & wifi? If you were arguing about an indicator for the HDD, that I could understand, but BT & WiFi? Why, when you can easily see this in windows anyway.

I'm not saying it's the perfect machine, but it is definitely an upgrade to the 1535 which you are comparing it with.

I understand that you did not like your 1555, but you should avoid posting comments comparing it to a machine that you don't really know and have not used for any great length of time.

Ask Mastershroom which one he prefers, his old 1535 that broke down quite a few times, or his new 1555. Bet I know which one he'd say ;)

I have received my new Studio 15 which came with Vista 32bit- I was expecting 64bit. Anyway, I'm going to install Windows 7 64bit but I wanted to ask if I need to enable anything in the BIOS to properly support 64bit? I don't think so but wanted to check with features in the BIOS such as virtualisation - I'm sure this is justa requirement when running Virtual Machines on the Host OS but wanted to check.

Maybe you should own an old Studio 1535 or 1537 for a few months and see how you like it.

My current Studio 1555 is a replacement system from Dell for my old 1535, which had a neverending slew of problems that Dell were never able to fix permanently. I owned that 1535 from August 2008 until June of this year, and I've had this 1555 since then.

I can safely say, having had plenty of experience with both systems, that the 1555 is superior to the old 1535 in pretty much every way.
    • New standard LED-backlit displays > old CCFL-backlit ones
    • Build materials are much more solid on the new 1555, not nearly as much creaking and bending as the old 1535
    • New ATi 4570 GPU > old ATi 3450
    • Synaptics touchpad > old Alps pad
    • Intel 45 chipset > old 965 chipset
    • Integrated subwoofer speaker system > old paper-thin cell-phone quality speakers
As for the touch sensitive media buttons, they were a nice idea, but they've been plagued by issues since day 1.

The only thing I can think of that I liked in the 1535 more than this 1555 is the ease of access to the CPU. On the 1535, all I had to do was remove the bottom panel and I had instant access to the heatsink and CPU. On this new 1555, I have to take the entire laptop apart and remove the motherboard.
I haven't done Fallout 3 yet, but I've been playing Oblivion quite smoothly, and I imagine that FO3 would have similar hardware demands.
Actually, the old Studio 15 resolutions went up to 1920x1200, which is just as wide as 1080p (1920x1080), but slightly higher vertically as well. And they did have optional LED displays as well.
Haha, you know me too well. :p
You don't need to mess with anything in the BIOS to go 64-bit.

posted in xps so posting here too .. just to clear confusion ..

Actually if you are going with 1080p Dell Studio 1555 it is most likely LG then since AUO doesnt make 1080p 15.6 WLED display .. its only LG or maybe samsung. See this website ... this shows what all AUO makes .. and nothing 15.6 http://auo.com/auoDEV/products.php?s...ems_id=2&ls=en
    LG 1080p for 1555 is most likely LP156WF1 - see page http://www.lgdisplay.com/homeContain...prd300_j_e.jsp

So i dont understand why people are saying it could be AUO or LG (i am talking about WLED 1080p display only).
(updated - i think the website is wrong .. AUO doesnt update its website properly )

Several people here and on dutch forums have reported AUO 1080p screens. It is more likely that AUO's website isn't reporting every screen they make.

AUO also makes an 15.6" 720 screen which is not reported on their website.

My girlfriend's 1080p display on her Studio 1555 is definitely an AUO panel. As Phil said, AUO's website probably just doesn't have everything listed.

You're not clearing up confusion; you're causing it.

haha :) thanks, relying on their website was supposed to be my source .. if they dont list all the panels they make then that itself indicates valid confusion and hence its very natural to be confused and remain confused. I would certainly report my panel once it comes. Atleast samsung is not in the studio 1555 panel confusion - thank god, otherwise it would have been a three way mess.

thanks, even on the other thread i updated my post. Its pretty bad to see AUO not updating their websites .. i think you are all right, they do make 15.6 panels, just that they dont update their websites .. sorry for the confusion. The confusion persists ....

I just got my Studio 1555 yesterday. It has a 1080p AUO panel, for sure. An issue that I'm having though is that I'm unable to connect to Wireless-N with the Intel-5300. Nothing works, I've tried everything I can think of. Does anyone have this card and can connect with N?

    Sorry but I don't Sharpnd...

I installed Windows 7 RC in my 1555 as soon as I got and everything was working fine but somehow I missed the step where I could create partitions on my hard drive(it's a 500GB one). I've just put my installation disc in again and tried to go through the whole process again but I managed to miss that step again. Sorry if this sounds a bit trivial(I'm really new to all this) but somebody tells me exactly how I go about creating partitions pls? I'd like three, 100GB for C: for the o/s, 100GB for another and the rest for another. Thank you.
