Well, we purchased two identically configured units and they both have the same issue, so I would steer clear. I just can't believe how behind all the drivers are for 64 bit Windows 7? wasn't that supposed to be their selling point?

Noooo. I was ready to post how it seems to have fixed my problem, but now I feel like it's the inevitable :(

    Same situation? Watching streaming videos?

I recently installed the latest version of the driver from the Dell site - R23459. This seems to have partially solved my full screen video problem. After the install I noticed that full screen was working without crashing the machine when the laptop was connected to the power adapter - but was dying when running on batteries. In the power settings for the ATI driver I changed it to do "Maximize Performance" instead of "Maximize Battery Life". Since then the laptop is not crashing when running video in full screen. Maybe some of you guys can try this?

I still have problems with syncing iTunes with my iPhone - it never completes the sync - this problem started after I upgraded to A3 version of the BIOS. I hope Dell will have an update for this soon.

@ssampath - have you tried turning it off all together? Also, the iPhone sync is a recognized problem with the chipset - dell has released a fix for the studio 17s, the Studio XPS 16s but not the studio 15 (if I remember correctly)

Yep.It seems the 1557 is the low man on the totem poll.Their on A06 and A05 bios.We are stuck with the A03 still.

I really think they just dont care at this point.Me personally I could care less about iphone support but my wife likes it and she cant sync hers.(It seems to work here and there).
I really cant see it as being that hard to send out bios fix for it but they choose not to worry about it.
With that said I see their sending out BIOS fixes and replacement power adapters for XPS 1645 users. Why are they doing that you ask?Because one of Dells employees purchased one and found out that all the problems the people on this forum was having was REAL and not just a bunch of people ranting but REAL people having big problems with their hardware.

I guess if someone at Dell purchases a 1557 we might have a shot at someone at Dell giving a crap.I dont see it happening.....

Is the syncing an issue purely for the iPhone? I have absolutely zero problem sync'ing my iPod touch.

I give up - had the laptop crash today when I was watching some video podcast! I have had it for a couple of months - can I get a refund??

You mean go with the stock Windows drivers for the video? Does that work? I have a lot of buyers remorse right now!!!

Haha DCx "I know your kind???"

Oh no you don't, you muppet. I'm not the one going around getting stroppy with people if they don't agree my point of view. So you're pointing out how pointless the moaning is????!!!! YOU'RE the one who's been moaning the loudest from your first post!!!! I had every right to comment, as a 1557 owner (which you are not), when you start spouting B.S. like "most people" have an issue with the 1557 and it's "not helpful telling people that you're not having problems"!! (What???!!!!!)Was that constructive? No! Was that whining and whingeing? Oh yes!!!! Now get of your high horse and **** off out if this thread as it doesn't apply to you.

@Nifkin: Glad to see you've read my posts, so you know I did own one, and returned it. Even without owning one, I've been answering questions and contributing.

Now that you've got the last word in, can you stfu? (Oh, and by the way, OneCool made an appearance and doesn't seem to care about my comments, so maybe you should stop the nerd rage?)

When you are watching a video (flash)just right click on it,go under settings and then click on the first little screen with a question mark on it.Uncheck enable hardware acceleration.

yeah, watching streaming videos. I am going to try maximizing performance instead of battery life which was suggested. I was also previously on BIOS A02 still, I am up to A03 now, but according to everyone else that won't seem to change anything.

I am surprised that others say that the Studio line is low on the totem pole? You can't configure 1/2 of the goodies on an XPS as you can this Studio model? Maybe I see things differently from our University Premier account? I was bummed they discontinued the Blu-ray player which is how I had it configured around X-mas, then it was gone....poof! Seems like it would have just lead me to these problems sooner. Maybe I need to work more and watch less youtube :)

@OneCool - I see, too bad we aren't higher up for the i7 support. I think they will come through pretty soon though.

@DCx - yeah, I called our rep and they kept giving me the run around that it wasn't there on their computer either. They said they were having issues with the hardware responding properly. Maybe they were aware of the ATI driver incompatibility?

    Hi guys........
here another unhappy owner of this powerfull laptop.
I have to recognize thats is a good piece of hardware with a crap of heating solution.
Mine stays at 50 °C when idlle and reaches 90° at full load in just minutes.
Not tested teh video card yet as I wont use it anymore baceuse Im trying to send it back to DELL and get my money back.
During some tested that Dell supports ask me to do, right after booting, I also got a CMOS error.
Most strage thing about this , as the fact thta when running the Test routine on Windows, there was no error with CMOS.
I found some similar issue in one forum and the guy said that probably was teh Phoenix Security Software that prouces that error.
Dell ask me to a tech visit in order to replace my motherboard, heatsink and blower!!!...................and I ust used 2 hours!!!
Anyway the computer runs great, but HOT, insanely HOt I must say.
My hands and wrest can not touch the zone arround the touchpad because of the heat.
Again, its a good piece of hardware but an horrible design

On the phone with DELL support now and have been for half an hour. Have performed 2 clean installs with this laptop and still getting crashing fullscreen video (powerplay is the cause but i wont disable it, they need to fix it) plus the the heat and constant noise of the fan.

He took control of the laptop and first thing was to check the device manager, there was an unknown device there and he asked what it was. I said I dunno bluetooth, you tell me? so he downloads the bluetooth driver and installs it, I saw some info while he was browsing about the device manager and looked it up on the work PC - turns out it was the acceleromater. told him thats what it was but he blindly persues the bluetooth driver lol...

this is going to be a nightmare, fingers crossed for a full refund. off to get a sony vaoi I think

Here's an update for those of you who want to fit the internal mobile broadband cards. It's a bit long-winded but it's worth it-so bear with me!

This works for the 5530 card and where your machine does NOT have the extra antenna-no replacement screen required!

    1. Fit the card the only way it will go in-no instruction required! Screw it in place if you are lucky enough to have the screw. I didn't but the antenna wire seems to keep the whole unit in place if wedged in carefully. If anyone has a spare screw or knows where to get one without having to buy a whole set please let me know.

    2. Now this is the interesting bit. The only 3 antenna cables my unit have are all connected to the wifi card-so I called the ebayer who sold me the unit for £39.99UK for advice. He was extremely helpful and told me to disconnect the WHITE cable from the WIFI card and connect it to the MAIN connection of the 5530. I was sceptical as I thought this may affect the WIFI card ability but the guy reassured me it wouldn't. I did as he said and carried on....

    3. Next up-drivers. The 5530 drivers DON'T work-use 5540 intead  :

    http://support.euro.dell.com/suppor...typeid=-1&dateid=-1&formatid=-1&fileid=351051

    2. You need to reboot for the driver to update

    3. Next, you need to be able to connect to the internet. From what I read, the dell software used for connecting to the internet is awful-instead, use this (from Sony Ericsson who actually manufacture these cards):

    http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/support/mobilebroadband/download/wirelessmanager/ec400g?cc=gb&lc=en

    4. The automatic installer didn't work on my 64 bit Win 7 OS. Instead, I navigated here:

    wireless manager/install/temp/setup 64

Obviously, if you have a 32 bit OS, use the 32 bit option

    5. Success! In my list of connections I was connected via my Orange sim card.

    6. The 'connection manager' part of the software hadn't installed but I was still connected-just no 'manager'. I then went on to install this part of the software by navigating:

    wireless manager/install/sonyericssonwirelessmanager5

The manager now installed (I can't remember if a reboot was required or not-sorry). However, it didn't pick up the 5530-this time even after a definite reboot. TBH, I haven't really bothered exploring further. My card connects beautifully without the need for the manager. From what I can see, the only assets of the manager are the ability to pick up texts if you need to and a data counter. The latter I'm sure you can have as a PC add-on whilst surfing via the 5530. The former? Well, I suppose you'd have to remove the SIM and place in your mobile phone. This would be a PITA but I guess not many people would have the need to do this too often.

If you really want to use the manager, the instructions are here:

    http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/download/1/498/312/1216807079/EC400g__WMUG_EN_1202_4686_2.pdf

As you will see, to properly install the manager, you should have the unit disconnected to start with. Since the software is primarily for an external dongle, and not an internal card, that would be straightforward. However, since I had already gone through most of the setup, I didn't really fancy opening up my laptop whilst powered up and connecting my card during the installation!!!

It's entirely possible I did things a bit in the wrong order-but I was learning as I went-hindsight is a wonderful thing! Therefore, it's highly possible that if you install this part before connecting the 5300 then you'll have full functionality of the manager. but, as I've said I'm happy and won't be testing this.

So, my long-winded post is nearly over-but I hope it helps. Incidentally, my WIFI seems to be working perfectly minus the white antenna lead. If someone reads this and knows this to be a bad idea please let me know!!

Just an update. I'm not really getting the same type of crashing anymore. Instead, the computer will just shut off once unplugged while watching a video. Also, this morning, I heard it take itself out of standby while I was urinating at 6am... o_O

I really REALLY love this computer, but something has to be done. I'm not sure what a dell service call would do. Is returning this really the only option?

Thanks for the effort with the write-up. Will definitely give this a go in the morning. I was tempted to try one of the other antennae as I did have the wireless n card with 3 cables, but am glad I waited to have someone else give a little guidance. If this works, and I still get fast enough throughput on my wireless card, then I will officially be happy with every spec of this laptop.

The only feature I haven't tested, which is surprising, given the cold winter is the built in hand-warmer that everyone keeps raving about...but I still need to find out how to switch it on.

Hey Guys, i have read all 98 pages of this thread and purchased my laptop in early Dec 2009. (spec in sig)

First off sorry for all of you with issues. I must be one of the lucky ones and can report no issues what so ever. I do play the odd game on this and do a fair bit of graphical work but don't push her to hard.

    A Few points,

people having the crashes have you tried a clean install, because im reading lots of driver issues, i would recommend a clean .

A most people having heat issues seem to be on the 1080 screens?

just a few things i noted.

I'm for one am very happy with mine and no worries, however it does worry me about the amount of unhappy people on here, hope you all get sorted guys and gals.

Well it's in and seem to be trying to work. The Dell Service Manual talks about a sprung loaded sim card slot...I'm not feeling it, if you get what I am saying. No spring loading there...I have 2 sim cards, the one after a lot of jiggling about gets detected...but I don't have BB on that card. The other card that I do have BB, doesn't get detected no matter how much I try adjust how it is seated in the slot (limited chance really to do anything as it is all built in)....that's bad Dell karma for you.

Any suggestions anyone? Check that - it decided to start working. Just to find out I need to top-up to get BB access...oh well, one step closer.

    Cheers,

Glad you got it working. My sim holder isn't spring loaded either-in fact the sims are a PITA to remove. Did you change the order of things a bit during installation and get the manager to work?

Didn't really need to change the order...ah, wait, I remember installing the Dell Broadband manager when I got my SSD, while the WWAN card was still in the post, so I may have inadvertently done that without planning. Anyway, it is all working - I installed the Vodafone software after installing the device though - no problems there.

Well one unrelated problem....I have discovered Vodafone changed the terms of their PAYG mobile broadband service about a month ago (and hence I discovered I had no more data available to d/l). It used to be £15 got you 1GB that never expired (or maybe after 270 days or so)...which is why I bought it. Now they say it's £15 for 3GB which expire after 30 days. I'm starting a fight on that front...I'm fairly certain they can't change terms like that after having marketed it the way they did. Anyway...I digress...so far all is good.

Haven't picked up a GPS signal yet, but that's no surprise since I am inside...will venture out once the weather has decided to improve...we may be waiting for a while for that.

    Thanks for all the help.

Did everyone just give up on the overheating issue and 90Watt of our dell 1557? I dont even see it coming pu in search results in dell forums. Are they even aware? or maybe just turning a blind eye for a product they cant fix?. I wish i had a bigger voice in forums or else id push this topic on them to get this issue known and fixed- even if it may be returning it and giving us a new laptop with a better motherboard, bios, and 130watt.

I guess everyone is satisfied with an iCore 7,
that works only ~58% of its potential.

Great thread. It helped me sort out my woofer. I thought i would repay the favour with instructions on how to install the latest ATI driver.

The latest ATI driver 10.1 doesn't install on my 1557 (win7 64). no matter what i did it always used the original drivers. Here's the instruction to install driver from ATI.AMD.com:

    1) download the latest driver from ATI
    2) run the file to extract the content to C:\ATI\Support\...
    3) Cancel the installation after the files have been extracted
    4) Dell uses a different device code to ATI's standard 4570.you need to modify two driver files so that it recognise the 4570 chip on 1557. Find these two files:

    C:\ATI\Support\10-1_vista64_win7_64_dd_ccc_wdm_enu\Driver\Packages\Drivers\Display\W76A_INF\C7_94918.inf

    C:\ATI\Support\10-1_vista64_win7_64_dd_ccc_wdm_enu\Driver\Packages\Drivers\Display\W76A_INF\CH_94918.inf

    5) Find the tag "[ATI.Mfg.NTamd64.6.0]" and add this line
    "ATI Radeon HD 4570 (Dell 1557)" = ati2mtag_RV630, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9553&SUBSYS_02BD1028&REV_00

the last part of this string is the device code used by my 4570 (Dell 1557), if your's is different then change it accordingly. Remember you need to apply this to both files.

    6) Uninstall the original driver, select delete file. Now goto the C:\ATI\Support\10-1_vista64_win7_64_dd_ccc_wdm_enu\Driver folder and run the setup. If it failes to install then run Driver Sweeper to clean your system and then run setup again - if you run driver sweeper deselect the C:\ATI\... you want to keep that.

Only try this if you understand what I've described. Try it at your own risk. I cannot be held responsible.

    Cheers

    Phu

Dell are trying to cheat me out of a refund, saying that it's my fault the system is crashing because I'm the one who has chosen to turn on the PowerPlay feature... it would be quite funny if the laptop itself wasn't such an expensive purchase.

This should be one fun saga, will post any updates.

They tried another remote connect to fix the issue, still crashing. They've asked for up to 2 more days to research and they'll call me back. I've now spent near a full day on the phone with them all up and had a gut full. There's been a 2 hour remote connect session, an afternoon with a technician who replaced parts and tried everything, and now today with this guy who is telling me it's my fault for the crash by enabling PowerPlay, along with his unsuccessful remote connect session.

How can I demand them to refund immediately? I'm in London, Uk.

    Just wondering here.

For all the people having the "Playing Youtube Videos Crash".

What are you using to connect to the internet Wireless or the Realtek wired connection.

If wireless what wireless card do you have?

Also do you have any third party firewall software running?

Onecool, I'm using the wireless connection via a 5300 card. However, it's happening when the youtube video has downloaded all the way to the end. But it could still be an internet issue (doubt it though). To verify, I'll properly download some HD content to my HDD and then try viewing. Will keep you posted.

    Windows firewall only, FYI.

I'm wondering if this is just a flash player thing. Does it happen to anyone in Windows Media Player? (is the windows player as good quality wise as the flash player when everything works?) Or via a blue ray disc (I have a vested interest in the latter as I managed to track down a direct replacement for my DVD unit and it's working it's way to my address right now).

I also had some crashes with youtube videos. The only thing I found is to disable some options in AVIVO in ATI center.

Thanks for bringing my attention to the community.dell.com post. I actually tried the youtube test early today and unfortunately it crashed, as per everyone else. Someone within the post claimed that they fixed this problem by reinstalling Win7 without the recovery partition.

The video driver works fine and my games ran fine with the power brick, haven't tried running it on just battery.

I'll try and reinstall win7 and see if it resolves my problem.

Okay, quick update. I've tried watching only DOWNLOADED TO HDD (from youtube etc) high defintion, full screen all night with not one crash (battery power only). Of course, I thought I'd fixed everything last night and hadn't, but this IS encouraging. The downloaded video plays automatically in Windows Media Player but with no problem. I have a suspicion that this may actually be a Flash Player problem more than anything else. To further confirm, if you look at user comments in youtube from people trying to watch HD content (search HD 1080 in youtube), there are many who share our issues who also own powerful systems (non Dell).

There are two possible fixes from reading these comments. Firstly, download the Flash player 10.1 beta. Or, secondly, this HTML5 thingy seems good. I still suspect there may be a heat/power issue but this may get things going well for everyone bar serious gamers (maybe!!!)

    Hold on that reinstall, Phu!

Have you guys tried disabling hardware acceleration??

I was experiencing the same problems as you guys are now...
Crashes when watching HD video's on YouTube on fullscreen.. even BSOD's.

After disabling hardware acceleration in flash player apps 2 months ago, I haven't had any crashes so far. So try it :)

Right-click on any flash player application (youtube etc), settings, deselect hardware acceleration. That should do the trick.

NEW STUDIO 15 @ DELL HOMEPAGE:

    *** Core i7 WITH ATI RADEON 4670 ***

EDIT: Apparently this was a (common) mistake by Dell.. It's changed to an ATI RADEON 5470

I did try the disabling hardware acceleration and it did work. However, if you read up on Flash Player, the whole point of that function is to draw upon your GPU so that the experience is enhanced. And the whole point of me spending my hard earned cash on a top spec laptop was so I could get the best experience possible. Having to 'mollycoddle' the GPU because it isn't working right, and opt for reduced playback, isn't acceptable in my eyes.

That said, I'm still banking on this possibly being a Flash Player problem-see my previous post. Videos that are downloaded, and not streamed in Flash, are playing perfect for me (so far!). As far as streaming from youtube is concerned-there is still the possibility that can be fixed too by using the Flash 10.1 beta or HTML5. I might just try that later.

It's the PowerPlay function of the ATI card, when unplugged it enters 'Maximize Battery Life' mode. This, combined with playing full screen flash content via the GPU, causes the laptop to crash.

But I have my laptop set up so that ATI powerplay gives maximum performance even whilst on battery (done through Windows power options). Does this get overrode somehow? And why does it only seem to happen in Flash on fullscreen (so far anyway, for me)?

Okay, next update. I’ve been playing around all morning with various things (it’s just great being off work!!) I’ve updated to the 10.1 Flash player, tried HTML5 in Youtube with the full screen add-on and played downloaded youtube videos from my HDD on Windows Media Player unplugged until my 9 cell battery gave up. Here are my findings:

    • Videos downloaded from youtube and played on Window Media Player run absolutely beautifully with not one crash-and remember this was running that 9 cell battery until dead (I have to say the picture quality and those great speakers make for a wonderful experience)

    • The 10.1 Flash player in youtube ran jerky for me

    • The HTML5 in youtube didn’t work particularly well either

    • Neither crashed but even pausing to allow the streaming plenty of time for ‘catch-up’ didn’t stop jerky playback

    • I didn’t do the modded driver update suggested by Momsteria so a combination of that and what I’ve tried may be enough. TBH, I’m happy-I can live with just downloading-so I won’t do that update unless someone else proves the combination to work. Momsteria-perhaps since you’ve done the driver update you could try what I’ve done and let us know how you get on?

    • The only other variable I didn’t experiment with was with the laptop sitting on my lap. I did all this with the machine sitting on my desk. The 9 cell battery makes it sit up and therefore provides better airflow. I seem to remember the crashes happened to me whilst on my lap. That said, today the laptop did still feel hot. Probably irrelevant but something else to try later if this doesn’t fix things

    • So this is all promising. It seems that it may not wholly be a GPU issue; it’s only when using Flash/HTML5 that problems arise. The problem may well be more with these than with the GPU itself. Again, reading the youtube user comments, there do seem to be a good few other people with powerful, non-Dell laptops experiencing similar problems.

    • For anyone wanting to dabble. Flash 10.1 available here:

    http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer10.html

    HTML5 youtube:

    http://www.youtube.com/html5

You need an add-on to watch fullscreen:

    https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/ebgmnlijojnbaobgigecaphecgokpnhp

I don’t know about Internet Explorer-go find if you need to! Good luck.

So apparently the Studio 15 in the UK lists a 1GB 5470 when bought with an i7. I'm assuming it isn't a typo since the 4570 usually comes with 512MB of vram.

It's a 64-bit card but according to one of the reps it uses GDDR5 memory. Other than that, the card just seems like a slightly higher clocked 4570 with DX11 support.

quick update - dell are collecting the laptop tomorrow to try and fix the crashing, then they'll test and return it to me, if it still fails they said they'll give me a refund. but then again, that's also what they promised me when I let a technician come and waste an afternoon of my time.
