So a friend of mine also got a 1557 with all the same specs as mine. In the same room under all the same conditions his was running 5-10C cooler and when the processor temp did jump up, it dropped extremely quick, unlike mine which slowly drops 1C at a time.

Dell wanted to have me send the unit in for repair but as its only < 2 months old I said I didn't want refurb'd parts. They are now sending a brand new 1557 and I can just send the old unit back then. Hopefully the new one won't have the same issue(guessing had to be poor heat sink application to the processor cause everything else was staying within expected temp ranges).

Mouse pad heats up a bit when watching videos but not horrible. When I boot my system it normally goes up to 60-61C within about 3-4 minutes and stays there or higher at all times. The video card temp(under mouse pad i believe) sticks between 50-55C which is not too horrible.

I checked it in linux using acpi, and Windows using realtemp/gpuz/everest. All about the same result. My friends jumped to 60 or so when watching a video but very rapidly dropped back into the low 50's or high 40's. Mine jumps up to 70C+ and then goes down one degree at a time slowly.

No cooling pad. I bought the system to be a laptop and not a desk bound system so want it to operate properly without help. I understand it will never be a cool running system, but the fact that mine is so much hotter than my friends seems to indicate to me that something is wrong. Also based on other peoples numbers it seems mine is high.

Under load his seems to stay a bit cooler, but more importantly cools down more quickly once the load is gone. Mine takes forever to cool and even a simple application makes it run up to 61-65C. His fluctuates a lot between 48 and 55C. I'd much rather see that bouncing around of the temps as it seems to indicate the heat is being pulled off the processor more quickly.

@vires90, those are very close to my temps as well. It seems that many others here have lower temps(although many have modded the system). My friend has the same configuration as mine and runs between 5-10C cooler. When I contacted dell they seemed to think those temps were high for not doing anything other than basic web surfing. Then again, mine idles at 61 and goes to 64-65C for surfing so thinking bad heat sink.

Yep you read it right.I had a extra copper shim that was a little thinner than the one I used on the GPU.So I put it on the CPU and it put more pressure on the CPU core.In theory it should help but i havnt really noticed much difference so far.

Im going to do some stress testing this weekend and see how it holds up to Eversest Stress test,Furmark with ThottleStop ON.

Im not expecting any miracles though

Looking forward to getting your results, hopefully you may get slightly better results having used IC Diamond, we will see. :)

Also on a different note, is this the correct link for the official 10.3 drivers.

    http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Pages/radeonmob_win7-64.aspx

I ask because the file size states 68.7 MB but the download link file is only 1.09 MB

this issue has been replied several time...
    anyway ...
    1. update your bios to a04(available on dell website)
    2. update your graphics card driver to 10.3 catalyst version.(available on amd site http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownloa...b_win7-64.aspx )
    3. which software do u use to monitor the cpu clock?. its not a serious issue that the cpu goes on varying the clock speed (depends on the applications) as long as u r getting good performance and stability with out any temperature issues , its ok. (dont bother about its clock speed, as far as i7 is considered it automatically adjust itself for the best performance.)

one more tip . . if u r using youtube a lot , then use adobe flash player 10.1 beta version
http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flashplayer10/ . its well tuned and a lot faster.

    Hey guys,

I'm a 1557 user and this tread has been extremely helpful in terms of handling it, so many thanks for all the previous advice first of all!

Now, I have encountered a seemingly 'new' problem with my studio - very annoying, random Bios-like beeps. It's better explained here:
    http://en.community.dell.com/forums/p/19321997/19686181.aspx#19686181

Please help, I'm more than sure DellSupport won't.

    Greetings,
    Paweł

it says that 90w adapter was replaced with 120w one .... dell really replaced it?
and new cooling unit? i think the bios also need to be changed for that setting ..

Yup, the guy on the phone said the problem may be connected with the adapter, so they got me the 120w instead of the old 90w (it didnt help).

By a new cooling unit, I meant that they replaced it with an identical one, assuming the old one was faulty. The 'new' one was matching visually, and the engineer who came to my place didnt even know if there were any changes to it, ffs!

Still, the beeps are here ;/ Did you hear of this problem?

this seems a tough problem to me.
i haven't heard about this problem . will try to search abt this.
try to describe the pattern of beeps.. and when it happens ? ( eg: while stressing the system or using keyboard..)
u got any blue screen errors before?
tried running diagnostic tests in the startup ? ( dell engineer might have done it - thts their routine check up. )
when did u buy ur system ?
    any instances of physical damage?

I believe I read at another forum about people complaining about this beep thing (can' remember exactly where, maybe dell communities forum). I believe you do refer to dell manual (which came with this laptop) about this beep sound, don't you? Usually computer beeps to tell us something, e.g. memory or graphic card imminent failure. How did the beep sound? What ever it is, it is not good.

The pattern of the beeps seems to be completely random and not connected with the type of work being done by the laptop - they appear both when it's idle, surfing the net and playing games.

Sometimes it's just a single beep with a little freeze (e.g. while playing pes2010, watching a flash video, surfing the net), sometimes it's a single beep without that kind of freeze, sometimes there are 2, 3 beeps in short periods of time.

I didn't experience any blue screens, the engineer ran the diagnostics and everything was ok.

My GPU goes to around 86C while playing pes2010, and the CPU is around 58-61C when idle, 70C when stressed.

There has been no physical damage to the unit.

Well, I'm sure the beeps indicate sth must be malfunctioning, but I'm more than sure this shouldnt be my problem, therefore I'm now on the line with Dell support, will let you guys know what they come up with.

    Many thanks,
    Paweł

i usually get around 50-55 degrees on when the cpu is idle. and while stressed around 75 (max). surfing never makes my cpu go above 60 degrees.

thats right core i7 is designed to handle more temperature than the previous core 2 duo.
surely core i7 touches 80 degrees when the cpu is fully throttled,, (while rendering a 3d image or video rendering, or while playing a very graphics hungry game in high resolution.(which i am sure our hd 4570 wont allow core i7 to play .)it will never gets close to 80 degree or say 70 while watching hd movies. i can say. when i play it goes to 65 max. maybe.

are you sure that u r keeping the laptop vents free from any obstruction . or are u using it on soft surface - bed or soft cushion. ?

You really shouldnt set this laptop on a bed, blanket, rug etc.....

That will block the intake fan on the bottom of the system and will cause a lot of heat problems with this system

    ello pawel...
Do you get beeps or is it the error sound in the windows ?
beeps r the ones u hear when u turn on ur system with its battery low.
If its error sound and the system freezes after the sound, then it may be an audio driver problem...
just disable all recording hardware and see if the sound is still there...
If its gone then plz reply back and i will tell u how to get ur hardware working correctly.
if its really a beep sound then certainly its bcoz of some hardware malfunctioning or device conflicts or something else which is hardware related.

also do u have any gestures defined for running apps like WMP and notepad ?

if it pops up on startup then use msconfig to disable it in the startup.

The cpu temps are highly dependent on surroundings temps.
at my frnds room which is relatively hotter than my room, i get idle temps in the range of 64-69C
while at my room the idle temps r 61-65C.
at my home which is much much cooler than here the temps r 50-55C.
so its all upto ur surrounding temps.
The critical temperature for most of the intel cpu's along with i7 is 100 C so i7's arn't much of highly heat resilient cpu's

JUST TRY USING laptop ON HARD WELL VENTILATED SURFACE...and check the temperature.. if u r using it on the bed , try to keep some flat board in between .
as far as studio 1557 is considered, the air vents in the bottom surface is a crucial factor for controlling heat.

so I contacted dell tech service, explained them about the heating problem, they are going to replace the motherboard, heat sink, fan and adapter( since it was getting hot as well).

Yea for some reason after i reboot my computer, after 30mins or so notepad opens up, its been happening to most windows 7, something to do with desktop.ini file. I can't figure it out yet how to stop it.

I have a question about my battery. This was my SECOND time using my 9-cell battery. It showed up as 1h17min = 70% remaining. (I was surfing webs, watching YouTube). The "power plan" was set to Balanced. Is it supposed to be longer? The 1st time I used it was around 3 hours with 70%.

screen brightness is a major factor, battery indicator usually varies alot,
even if it says 3 hrs , may not give u 3 hrs of charge.
the best way to calculate battery back_up is by using the battery till only 5-10% of the charge is left., (as emptying the battery is not good for it_ source pc world).
from your question i am guessing that u usually wont run down the battery, if yes, u wont be getting worried at 70 % battery level.

Try installing the latest IDT Audio drivers from the dell drivers download site and also check for updated drivers for your other installed hardware/software. Also, I think I remember reading that the Dell Datasafe Local application (if you have it installed) can cause strange conflicts. If you have this application installed there are updated drivers that you can download and try. I made the decision like many others to carry out a clean install of win 7, this appears to clear up a lot of strange intermittent problems.

Have you tried ATI driver ver 10.3? Is this 1080p HD played on youtube? I think you have different problem. Typical out-of-the-box problem for most 1557 is computer freeze (not bluescreen/reset) because ATI driver crashed while watching 720p - 1080p HD video on youtube.

EDIT: Have you tried to remove IDT driver & just use preinstalled driver by windows instead for your audio?

Hi all, I wonder whether one of the experts here could help me? I tried to update to the Catalyst version 10.3 on the AMD website, but the result was that CCC no longer worked. After much messing around I managed to use system restore to get back to the working factory-installed version. What did I do wrong? I have read about uninstalling all drivers and then re-installing, but how do I do that?

    Many thanks in anticipation...
