Getting my 1557 tomorrow (Ord 28th Sep) - Yusss
Great to hear that it has the eSATA port!
-
-
I really must be bored..... 3:35am and I'm still playing with it
4hrs 9mins timed from power cable unplugging to auto shutdown
That was with extended battery life enabled, i tweaked the power settings too a little. I watched 2 movies in that time from external HDD!
But get this for a nice little number... My brother got his delivered today too (720QM on his though) and he got 5hrs 13mins browsing internet on wired LAN with outputting to an external monitor and laptop screen off.... He did go and put an Intel SSD in it within an hour of opening it!! LOL
Good luck guys with getting your presents tomorrow... FYI, I ordered our 2 laptops on 8th October
-
I hate you guys! I'm so jealous, I ordered sept 24!!!
-
Says mine is in the country now and will go out for delivery tomorrow. Japan delivery system is very punctual so I should be see it tomorrow evening at the latest, Saturday if I am unlucky. (I even get things delivered on Sunday evenings here sometimes
-
Have the i7 Studio 15's been removed from the UK Dell website for anyone else?
I cant seem to find them anymore
-
has also been taken off the Danish site where I ordered mine on the 10th.
-
I ordered mine yesterday from dell uk and haven't got confirmation yet, only an interent receipt. is that normal?
-
just after midnight when the current offers ended they changed the price of the 6gb ram version from £949 to about £1300, so unless they realised thats not a great deal and have taken them down this morning to re-price them
-
Having kept my eye on Dell's deals for the last few months, I've noticed that at the midnight/Thursday morning deal changeover there are often hiccups; if you check just after midnight there are crazy (as in high) prices quoted; this usually settles down for the week later on the same day. Seems that they remove and re-apply the deals to the website while it's live
-
Well no probably not, a company the size of Dell will have a development server, a staging area, and countless other servers we never get to see. However, when the system changes things over, it will still take some time. It's really not uncommon to see things like this happen.
-
Yeah Fradge, I do appreciate that a huge corp the size of Dell would have a development server, a staging area, and countless other servers etc, that's why I made my comment about them appearing to make changes to the live site, coz that's what it looks like at 1am on a Thursday morning; one minute a spec option is there, next it's not, next it's returned but upgraded, then it goes back to the original option... happens a lot, during which time you could place more than one order. Surely Dell could make up their minds and stick with the changes they want to make before rolling them out? Would keep it simple and stop them from looking silly
-
But really, do you think 1am is their peak time for visitors
-
Computer geeks NEVER sleep!

Check this out guys:

Thing is, it's past 14:00 UK time, and there are still only two Studio 15 options available to order on the Dell UK website, and neither of them are 1557s... if you try and search for them using the usual list of e-value codes, you reach a "request not recognised" page. Curious.......
EDIT: Oops! The post above was at the same time as mine! Hmmm.... I'm wondering if Dell changing their choice of machine to release i7s on is due to a limited allocation of chips from Intel, or some problem with with the i7s in Studio 15 laptops themselves??! Gulp!!! For my sake and anybody else who placed their order before today I hope the former is the case! Still, seems odd that there are only two configuration options for the c2d 1555 model available as well...
Gosh; I would've been plenty peeved if I'd waited til W7 launch day to order my machine; didn't really want to pay the premium for a Studio XPS and it's "leather accents", heheh. -
Let's just consider ourselves lucky to have ordered the 1557 on time
We'll find out soon enough whether Dell is gonna offer 1557's again in the future..
Until then, I'm gonna enjoy my own 1557, which I'm receiving tonight!! -
Just went to dell.co.uk to check out the spec of the i7 Studio XPS, and when you click on that option on the laptop home page you get a "We're sorry, but we are unable to process your request to configure the identified product" message. Seems like W7 launch day has found Dell in a bit of a pickle!
-
I'm worried now as my 1557 order from yesterday hasn't been confirmed! I will phone them now!
-
Check the bank account/credit card you made payment with too.
-
Good Idea, I just checked and nothing has come out.
Eventualy I got through to an operator and they said that the payment would be processed within the next 24-48 hours.
So seems like my order is ok, although i find it strange that it takes so long to process my payment, I've bought high value items online before such as flights or camera gear and always had payments processed instantly.
I just hope my and everyone elses order doesn't suffer because of supply issues! wonder can we request a xps 16 with the same specs for the studio 15 prices if they fail to deliver! -
Ha! Doubt it very much. But if they are having issues with their internal systems which have caused the delay in your payment being processed (my order confirmation was received within six hours of the order acknowledgement on Monday) then I'm sure you're not the only one in the same boat and they'll honour your order.

Was just given this link by a "helpful" Dell CS advisor:

Seems there are Core i7 Studio 1557s hidden in there somewhere! -
Well after getting mine yesterday I spent all day dumping their install (It was awful...dont get me started)
All I have to put on it is their copy of Vista Home pre SP1 64bit.
Im here to tell you im not that impressed with it at all.
With everything thats in this laptop I was thinking this thing was going to be a monster. Im left with what seems is just a minor upgrade from my E1505.
Maybe its just the Vista OS thats holding it back (I hope)
Even after a clean install things feel sluggish and the audio sounds real cheap. Even after spending 30 minutes adjusting it.
PCmark Vantage resulted in 4062,,,seems low to me but maybe it isnt.
Im thinking of just dumping Vista 64 for the Windows7 beta 32 I have for now.
Seems like all this fancy new hardware is only adding up to a bunch of hype so far.... can I have my grand back? -
Ouch! Onecool, Not the report I was hoping for, could you please ellaborate more on what was wrong with the factory install?... And can anyone say if his PCmark score is good? Seems average but not really what I was hoping to push out of it....
-
Did any get the Studio 1557 with Windows 7. How well Windows 7 run on Studio 1557. i think Windows 7 is build to support all the feature of Core i7.
-
I would be curious to hear if anyone has tried a pcmark test on the computer as it arrives from the factory then again straight after a fresh format...
also what were the specs of your old 1505 if the difference was not so large? -
There is Review video of DELL Studio 1557
check it out
it as Windows 7 running on it
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7A3TyQRspE -
Fantastic! Now where's my Dutch/English phrasebook....
-
He doesn't tell alot.
- Windows 7 is running smooth
- Good image quality
- Sound is good enough
- Robust, only place where you push in is at the speakers
- He finds the cable of the adapter a little short
-
Come on, OneCool! You gotta give us a more detailed review; you can't keep us hanging on like this! Is it really all bad??? -
Just got mine delivered! Setting it up now. I might get around to reviewing it later but I might end up crashing to bed. Just finished bathing the baby and getting him to sleep and can now really start playing around with my 1557!
Check you guys later! -
What monitor (Brand) does everyone have on the 1557?
-
Well I have had my 1557 since the 20th and so far I am very impressed. I find it very quick and responsive and the boot up time is good. The screen is excellent. The keypad is good. I have been most impressed with the battery life. On power saver mode I managed to get just under 4 hours of websurfing and working with microsoft office. As soon as you load up something such as iTunes the battery life fades far quicker for some reason. The speakers aren't great but what do you expect from laptop speakers. I myself haven't done a reformat and am using the original install as I had no qualms with the performance, I just got rid of all the excess rubbish programs.
-
Hi, are you using vista or w7? do you have the 6-cell battery or the 9cell?
-
Yeah, it would be appreciated if anybody providing a review can give their machine's specs! Thanks
-
Just checked my orders status and it has changed again! But for the better
Seems they are not installing Vista, and shows that it will now come factory installed windows 7! WooT! Date still set for 11/9...
For somone who already has theirs, can you notice the subwoofer in the speakers (soundwise)? -
I am using Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit and the 6 cell battery.
-
Ok, I put Windows 7 beta 32bit on it and everything is working much better and faster.
When I first booted it up in their install of Vista Home 64 it was just awful.
CDs and DVDs wouldnt play.It start for about 5 seconds and then start skipping really bad.
Here is a PCpitstop test http://www.pcpitstop.com/betapit/sec.asp?conid=22853045
Click on "World Portable Rank = Top 16% " and it shows your score.Use the TABs to veiw all thats in my laptop
If you have never used that site its really good at telling you the performance of your PC plus it gives you all the info on your PC.
With day to day stuff I see nothing different then my E1505.
specs...
Coreduo 1.6ghz
2gigs ddr2 667
X1400 256mb
Sigma tel sound
Only when I was converting a .AVI to DVD format did I notice a big difference. It converted the file about twice as fast.... Im sure its just me but shouldnt a laptop thats almost 4 years newer be more than twice as fast?
I guess im just anal about this kind of stuff.
When I went from my old 5100 to the E1505 I seen HUGE leaps in performance..... this just seems like a minor upgrade really.
As for the subwoofer you really cant hear it. All it really does is give you more snare drum then stock lapper speakers but it does give you better sounding highs.( thats if I have it configured right)
The no hdd, wifi, num, tab lights kinda sucks to me too.
Wish I had a copy of Windows 7 64bit.All I have is 32bit.
Windows 7 performance snapshot http://i37.tinypic.com/307sydy.jpg
E1505 scored 3.9 -
HD4570 512mb
I see yours is scoring way low on the CPU test? -
Mine's arrived today, I'll be loading Win7 64-bit and posting many benches here ASAP! Specs as follows:
i7 720QM
4GM DDR3-1333
4570 512MB
500GB HDD
1920x1080 screen
She's mainly gonna be used as a digital DJing platform and for my other music projects but I'll be sure to bench a bunch of games
-
Awesome, gratz! Looking forward to the gaming bench's!
-
I think the reason this 1557 seems slower on day to day stuff is because of the DDR3.
My E1505 had DDR2 which has a lower latency. The CAS was only 5 with the DDR3 I think its more like 8-9.
Or maybe Intel needs to work on their on-board memory controller
-
Hey peeps, could I ask that you post only thumbnails rather than nearly full size images. It completely ruins the thread for people with lower resolutions; in fact even my notebook with 1600x900 doesn't display properly now in this thread.
-
I used thier thumbnail link but it came up like that, sorry.First time using their image hosting. http://www.imagevenue.com/ my normal host has been having alot of PRON pop-ups lately
OK... more complaints....hehehe
I dont like the fact that when you switch from AC power to battery the monitor dims.I always turn this off in the BIOS.There is no adjustment in the BIOS to stop this...sux!.
Also when I bought the 1557 it said everywhere that it has a E-sata port.
Even says it on the side of the laptop!
Look in the BIOS under the first TAB... E-SATA = NONE
Id say thats false advertisement.... and BULLSH%$# -
Actually I was told the eSATA port was discontinued on the 1557 and online it made no mention when I was using the sci site!!
Mine, my brother in laws and my best mates all have eSATA and I'm using mine right now on eSATA with a Seagate Pro external HDD..... Works a treat
FYI.... My mate just ran that pcpitstop test on his, its totally factory standard install 720QM, 4GB RAM, ATi 4570.... It scored as follows:
http://www.pcpitstop.com/betapit/sec.asp?conid=22857494
I'm now going to install W7-64bit on mine and will run the test too, not that I can see it being much better as theres little room for improvement on those percentages!! -
This is a windows function I believe; have a look in the power management settings (click the battery icon in the toolbar, choose more power options and then change the power plan you want). There will be an on AC power setting and a on battery setting that will fix what you are talking about.
-
Can somone run a 3dmark score for me and post the results, I'm really interested!!!
-
Yeah,Mines only a T4200 processor,My machine isn't a 1557 it's the 1555,It was just odd to see the same graphics score less in your machine
-
