Unless there is an instruction on Dell website, you don't need to update them in order. Two days ago I just updated BIOS from A05 to A08.
Since our card is an old model, we might not get very much benefit from ATI latest official driver. I also experienced better performance with Dell latest driver. So, better use Dell latest driver.

That is strange. When it stop halfway, did the program already start flashing BIOS? I doubt it already start flashing BIOS. Did your notebook connected to external power & the battery fully charged when you attempted to flash BIOS? Do you remember what exactly the error message is? I'm not sure what to advice here since I don't know why it stop halfway. Usually the program will halt/stop (before flashing BIOS) when the battery or the power cord disconnected from notebook.

If your notebook still working without any problem after the "halfway" BIOS flash, I think your notebook is OK. You can try to flash A08 again using "BIOS Recovery Method" but I don't want to recommend it since BIOS flash is a risky job.

That temperature is "normal" on Dell Studio with ATI 4570. About the game suddenly run really slow, it look like the CPU or GPU is throttling down because of the high temperature. I played NFS Shift & BF Bad Company 2 with GPU's temperature around 90C - 100C but I didn't experience any slow down. CPU's temperature is fine though 75C - 77C, sometime max to 80C, depend on the games.

Its good too know that i am not the only one with the heating issue. The Dell Support (Germany) first didn't want believe me.

    To my question:
Does anyone have the Crucial C300 (with any Capacity) SSD got in his/her Studio 1557? Because i've read from problems with the Studio 1558.

If your not gaming id go with the 10.3 (or Dells latest) driver but if your gaming with the 1557 then the latest mobile driver from AMD. (10.12)

    Hi guys,

Is there anyone who already have their graphic card burned because of the high temperature? Mine still OK but my warranty is going to expired end of this month. Highly probably will not extend the warranty. I'm considering to mod the heatsink & re-apply thermal paste in the hope to prolong it's life. DIY ViDock also look interesting since somebody already tried it on 1558. How hard can it be? :)

Wish I had extended warranty on my Studio 1557 :(

I'm still getting the occasional clicking/squeaking noise from the hard drive even though I've installed the firmware update from Dell's driver downloads. Sounds a bit like a beetle trapped in there, top left of key board

Anyone else still having this problem? Should I be worried enough to replace the hard drive?

Best wishes to all on forum.

you can runs some tests on the drive and see how it is. to be honest you can replace that drive for a few quid, so i would not worry. im sure if u called dell they would extend it?

I've downloaded Seatools utility from Seagate and it says all ok.
However, I contacted Seagate, gave them the drive serial no. and they said it was a Dell drive!

I will contact Dell too and ask about a price for a warranty extension.

To be honest, I wouldn't have a clue about how to replace the hard drive. Are there any reliable (and idiot proof) guides about how to do this?

Thanks loads for your quick reply.

yeah very easy to replace, no skills needed to replace memory or the hard drive. on the back is a L shaped panel that unscrews the hard drive is just a swappable component, i replaced my HD for a high bread one, but first off with any suspected hard drive issues... backup your data and then check the drive for issues.

seagate tools will help you with your seagate drive

    hello all,
a small problem happening these days to my comp. i have recently reinstalled my comp (about one week before have installed all latest drivers and updates. havent install dell applications and other dell softwares ). now while in the middle of something (say browsing or playing WMP or VLC etc (wont happen always)), the explorer goes not responding.. and i do the usual alt+ctrl+del and choose task manager. but it too wont respond., i cant do win+tab, alt+tab functions also.. wat ever which i am doing like vlc or wmp will continue to play can even control it too. only way i can make the system respond is by doing alt+cntrl+del again and choosing log off.. at tht moment all the windows responds just before logging off.
i looked through the reliability history (no problems) but event viewer shows a error related to SERVICE CONTROL MANGER. i dont know much about it. please help regarding this issue..
also... i had talked with the a dell technician and he suggested re installation of the windows 7 as well as formatting entire HDD.
wat caused this ?? i had upgraded my win 7 home premium to professional also just after the installation (i have a genuine key with me)
i am uploading the the event log also .
    thanks.

I still thinking whether to get extended warranty or not. Either way, I have plan to get this 1557 last at least 3 years. :) On a side note, my Dell never shut down because of overheat. My CPU's temp never too high, as long as I can remember. My 1557 running almost 24/7 since I bought it. :)

You still can buy extended warranty even your original warranty already expired but you'll have to pay double.
Top left of the keyboard is system fan. I guess your system fan is going to give up.
Oh...is there anyone else having the same problem? I didn't recall anyone else having the same problem. Probably I missed that. :)

@altoster, does it solved the freezing problem after you enabled the service?

This is my 1557's temperature when idle & light usage (surfing) - I let it run for 5 hours to collect these values:-
    [IMG]
I "cheat" actually. :D This is using cooling pad with fan at the middle which it sucked the hot air from the notebook (where the memory module is located). The temp for both CPU & GPU will slightly increased between 5X to 6X Celsius when doing heavy job like VMware simulation. GPU's temp arroung 58 to 65 Celsius. It does help cooling down the graphic card a lot except when playing games like Shift (9X Celsius).

in india they ask for Rs1000 extra for engineer visit if ur warranty is already expired.i bought 2 yrs accidental cover with extended warranty at Rs12907 on the last day of my warranty contract.
for my studio 1555 whose warranty had already expired they asked for Rs 13907 or something like that. :)

    hello one cool ,
previously i had partitioned my HDD as 4 drives (on the factory installed os using computer management),
after that i had formatted my c drive (which has OS installed) and reinstalled the OS into it around 2 weeks before..
    then the issue happened..
i called the dell service professional and he asked me to format the entire hdd and reinstall.. (with also asked me to debug the hdd (did in a command prompt ,, i forgot ... he told me some commands before reinstall)
now i have only 1 drive (he said its better.. (i need some clarification))
    no problems till now.

    comments are welcome.
    thank u

Cantiga chipset is referred to Intel 4 Series chipset (Montevina platform) (GL40, GM45, GS45, GS40 & PM45). So, we don't need to install it to our studio.

Our studio is Calpella platform, chipset codenamed is Ibex Peak.

    I have two questions:-
    1) ST Micro Accelerometer - Is this SATA controller capability or HDD capability?
    2) My bluetooth application is missing "Send a File" & "Received a File" context menu (right click at Bluetooth icon at Notification area). I don't remember whether I have it before or not. Do you guys have these context menu?

    Thank you.

I have been observing for some time that Dell India has removed Studio laptops from their website.

Does it signal the end of Studio series?

They still have Studio XPS. :) I dunno, not just India, they also removed from other countries too, for example Malaysia. I'm guessing they just want to maintain Studio XPS as high-line notebook instead of two models.

It is the drop sensor for the notebook.
I don't, but I'm running a generic Windows install, not the Dell factory install which may be different:

Do you mean what ever HDD we use or change it to another brand, this sensor still there?
I'm running factory install windows & bluetooth context menu is the same with yours. I'm going to reinstall bluetooth later. Without "send/receive s File" context menu, it is difficult to exchange files between my phones & notebook. Can use cable but might be not comfortable if you're in hurry. :)

    Correct.

Well, I just paired my phone and here are the steps:

    1) Double-click on Bluetooth icon
    2) Click "Add a Device"
    3) Make phone discoverable
    4) Click on phone icon in window, click Next
    5) Enter pairing code
    6) Wait for driver install
    7) "This device has been successfully added to this computer"
    8) Double-click on phone icon in Control Panel / Devices and Printers (same window from #4)
    10) A new folder name Computer \ TMK Phone launches which has subfolders audio / picture / video
    11) Copy file to or from phone as desired

bluetooth software should be allowed in the startup.. otherwise it wont be seen in the notification .
it once happened to me ... after re scheduling it in the startup, i was able to see the adapeter icon.

    @Terry Kennedy & @altoster,

Thank you for the suggestions. I appreciated it. :) The bluetooth icon actually appeared at notification area, it just missing the file transfer context menu. Also, I don't want to pair HP/bluetooth devices with my notebook - example scenario, when my friend want to send a file to me via bluetooth, I tried to avoid pairing his HP/bluetooth devices unless it is the last resort. No big deal actually. I can always transfer files by another way or just paired the HP/bluetooth devices. :)

I just want to share with you guys here, I just found out that FAN will work in passive cooling mode if thermal sensor TZ01 is equal or below 368.2 Kelvin or 95.05 ° Celsius. Which means FAN speeds are always at moderate or standard/normal speed. Thermal sensors locations are where manufacturer identified as potential hot spot. In our Studio 1557, I believe TZ01 is located near the processor (because TZ01's temperature almost identical with CPUs' temperatures) while TZ00 is near chipset or north bridge chipset. We can change the passive cooling temperature to, let say 60 Celsius instead of 95.05 Celsius. This means when CPUs' temperature reaching above 60 Celsius, FAN will rotate in maximum speeds. This should help cooling down the graphic card. In my case, when playing shift, maximum CPU's temperature is 75 Celsius while graphic card reaching 100 Celsius. 75 Celsius still in passive cooling mode thus explaining the graphic card high temperature. However, if we lowered the passive cooling temperature, the FAN will work overtime in max speed.

I'm wrong about the passive cooling temperature threshold. Actually it is a temperature threshold when CPU speed is throttled. So, 95C does look suitable value.

    hello all,
    just for discussion sake,
our studio 1557 has been in the market for more than a year, how you guys compare our studio with the present laptops..( how good or bad). i think its still among the performing laptops, apart from the few heating issues.. i saw laptops with core i7 740qm processors, but they deliver very similar performance to ours and is kind of similar in heating and battery usage.
as if for now i still think studio 1557 is not outdated..
    wat abt you?
    :)

I agree, in real-life performance there will be little differences between i7-720QM & 740QM. At best, 740QM will just slightly better than 720QM. If I have extra money, I'm thinking going to upgrade it to 920XM processor. Heat is not a problem to me. There are a lot of ways to handle it.

I also don't think it is outdated yet. Despite the GPU's temperature is very high when playing games, I'm satisfied with the performance of this notebook. I already planning to apply DIY Vidock. It should make the internal GPU relax/cool & still can play heavy games for hours with external graphic card. I'm not looking for "desktop's level performance" since I'm not hardcore gamers. So, DIY Vidock surely suitable for me. :D

i have a doubt about the RAM performance,
how well is 1333mhz than 1066.. any one noticed any difference... if yes where we will notice it.. which application ..
since kizwan uses laptops with these configs.. whats ur opinion..
    :)

In real-life experience, the performance won't be noticeable. I read many people think DDR3-1333 is slower than DDR3-1066 since 1333 have higher latency than 1066.

    Latencies calculation
    (CAS / Frequency (MHz)) × 1000 = X ns

    DDR3-1066 (on my Asus): (7 / 533) × 1000 = 13.1332 ns
    DDR3-1333 (on my Dell): (9 / 667) × 1000 = 13.4932 ns

You see, the difference is just roughly 0.5 ns slower. Well, in nano seconds. It is negligible though. You won't feel/noticed it.

OK, this is boring!!! Why not I just do memory benchmark?! ;)

    DDR3-1333:-

    - Memory Read = 13787 MB/s
    [IMG]
    - Memory Write = 11357 MB/s
    [IMG]
    - Memory Copy = 12229 MB/s
    [IMG]
    - Memory Latency = 53.9 ns
    [IMG]

    DDR3-1066:-
    - Memory Read = 7117 MB/s
    [IMG]
    - Memory Write = 6804 MB/s
    [IMG]
    - Memory Copy = 7406 MB/s
    [IMG]
    - Memory Latency = 105.3 ns
    [IMG]

Both are 2x2GB DDR3 configuration, both have same total memory & both are working in dual-channel mode.

    :)
