    Hi,

So I just bought a Dell Vostro 1000, decent specs, and good price.

AMD TL-60 2.0GHZ, 2GB RAM, 120GB hard disk, 9cell battery, Windows XP Professional heh, which was the real seal of the deal. I just wanted a laptop with a 15.4" screen, I need the screen real estate.

Anyway, I have a few questions.

#1) When the battery is charging I can hear a slight buzz sound, is this normal?

#2) There is pretty much no power management utility included, is there one? (CPU throttling control?)

#3) How do I find out the max amount of RAM, and max speed of RAM that I can install on this machine?

#4) (Added question). I use a hard drive diagnostic program called HDDLife that shows the temperature and health of the drive. My drive is always hovering around 50c, while my Thinkpad drive never went over 35c.

Thanks everyone, so far so good. It's a well built laptop, and even though I know the CPU isn't the fastest, I just wanted to show AMD some love :p

    1. I'm not sure about that one

    2. You can try clicking on the battery icon in the notification area. (near the clock) If that doesn't have what you're looking for, open control panel, switch to classic view and choose power options. Also, Dell QuickSet may include additional power management options.

    3. The Vostro 1000 supports up to 2 GB of RAM. The max speed is PC2-5300.

if you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for the Vostro 1000. I was thinking of picking one up for my wife. We don't need powerful laptops, and I thought the 1000 was a good budget choice. The build quality on my Vostro 1500 is nice, how does the 1000 compare to the other Vostros (if you can answer that one)?

The Vostro 1000 is not as solid and durable as the other Vostros. (It has an all-plastic chassis instead of magnesium alloy.) It's still alright for the price though.

Swift: (1) I wouldn't worry about it, unless it's loud; (2) check the BIOS, there might be some CPU speed control stuff; some other power mgmt stuff is in Win XP; (3) see dell.com, support section, owner's manual; (4) no idea.

    Hi,

I can't compare it to other Vostro's, but I've played with many laptops, and I can say the Vostro 1000 has superb build quality.

I paid just under $800 (includes taxes)
