EDIT: Got through and got this: "Thomas, we have not charged your account the amount Is just blocked. It will be realized with In 24-48 hours."...What does "just blocked" mean?

It means they put a temp charge on to make sure there was enough room in whatever account you paid with. The charge has not actualy been added, just room for it has been cleared from the account (which will subtract from the limit).

just a question methodis, why pay extra for the 2 gigs of ram when dell rips you off, and then only pick the 8400m? you would have saved money upgrading the ram yourself and then choosing other upgrades

    A. I'm computer hardware illiterate, and I would've had to pay the extra money to a friend anyways to upgrade it for me :p. Plus I would've had to pay Staples hugely inflated price for the RAM, as I only have a Wal-Mart and Staples near me, as I live in the woods :(
    B. I think the 8400m was the only option? I dunno, but I'm not a big 3D gamer, I mostly stick to emulators and 2D stuff, so the 8400m is fine, heh.

    A www.newegg.com

B Looks like the 8400M GS is fine for you, but you had the option of the 8600M GT as well, which destroys the 8400M series.

Yeah forgot about newegg :( But still, would've had to pay manual labor :p

    B. Yeah, but $169 is probably more then it'd cost for me to buy the RAM + labor anyways, no?

Also, weird thing I noticed, they don't have any AC adapters for you to buy at the accesories screen, does this mean that the laptop comes with one? Or do all of them come with one? heh :p

EDIT: Oh wow, didn't know laptop memory was so cheap. Hmm...how easy is it to install yourself? Do you have to take the whole thing apart?

$75 for 2gb of ram, and just pay some tech savy kid to do it for 10 bucks. ram isnt hard to upgrade, its actually quite simple, and you dont have to take your laptop apart, its generally under a latch

i'm really interested in how the Vostro line is in any way better than the Inspiron line with regards to quality - they both seem to be using the same chassis and shell (which i assume is plastic). how could it be that much different?

From all accounts, the Vostro and Inspiron lines were supposed to be identical in every way except the all black finish on the Vostros. I doubt anything has changed regarding this.

With the specs I have the 1520 is actually cheaper. Plus, the Vostros 1500 doesn't even have a 1440x900 display option.

From what I understand, 1 ram module is under the keyboard and the other is at the normal spot on the bottom.

u right but no need to replace the one under the keybourd. just the one in the back.
( they maybe even going to have free space for upgread cus the say u can upgread till 4 GB so most of the chance it got more space no ?!? )

everything i have read shows that ram should equal eachother, so if you have a 512 the other should be 512 etc... so if you have a 512 under the keyboard a gig in the back it will work but I have heard is better not to.

There will be no free space both slots will be full.

Why do they single out the 14" laptop to have no XP option!!

These companies drive me nuts- they figure out exactly what you would want and then tweak one important item to keep you endlessly searching...

I know they dont do it on purpose, obviously... but it drives me nuts anyway.

Someone posted here that Maybe the 1400 could come with XP if you used the phone. Any truth to that? Dell sales people are pretty dim-witted from what I have experienced.

ok, how are you people getting these so cheap? Here is the system I built:

    PROCESSOR: Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T5470 (1.6GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB)
OPERATING SYSTEM:Genuine Windows XP Home Edition, SP2
LCD PANEL: 15.4 inch Wide Screen XGA LCD Display with TrueLife™
MEMORY: 1GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz, 2 DIMM
HARD DRIVE: 120G 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
OPTICAL DRIVE: 24X CD Burner/DVD Combo Drive, without Roxio Creator
    VIDEO CARD: 256MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ 8600M GT
WI-FI WIRELESS CARD: Dell Wireless 1390 802.11g Wi-Fi Mini Card
    WEBCAM: No Webcam Option
SOUND OPTION: High Definition Audio 2.0

Total (including tax and shipping): $1,022.63

Does that seen right? I see people here getting them with similar specs for a lot less. What am I not seeing?

I'm confused; reading your link, it says that each BANK must contain matching modules, and that the two banks would work in dual channel even if their were different capacities between the two banks. If the Dell has two banks holding one DIMM each, then you should be able to use a 512mg and a 2gb. I think it bears some note that Dell offers the Vostro 15" with 1.5gb of memory, obviously using a 1gb and a 512 mb. Is there something I'm missing, or did I misread something?

2 slots constitute one bank (desktop mobos have 4 slots, 2 banks). You can use different sized modules, you just don't get the benefit of doubling the memory bandwidth. At least that's how I understand it. Perhaps someone else knows for sure.

tax for me is $67. Definitely cheaper than a similarly equipped inspiron tho. Too bad you can't get XP on 1400's... Also anyone know what the memory config is on these things? Am I looking at 2 dimms of 512 or what. I'm looking to up grade to 2gb but I'm not paying Dell that much to get it.

You get two 512MB 667mhz RAMs with the laptop. The upgrades from here aren't worth it in my opinion, better to upgrade it yourself later on.

Why do you say cheaper? If you configure a Vostro with the same specifications as an Inpiron 1520 with coupons (4 example 7300, 2 gb of ram, 256mb 6800m gt, 160gb of HD, bluetooth, webcam, etc), Vostro is more expensive.
