Looks nice. The 1400 looks like it doesn't have a glossy cover as compared to the 1500 and 1700 though. Just wish we could get a firm answer on where the RAM is. But it doesn't matter. I rather pay the extra $80 for dell's installing of em and not take the chance of delaying my order more.

u definitely got a good point but i think ill stay with the risk and u know what . . in 10 days from now ill call dell and try maybe to see if they can give me discount on the memory cus of the very long shiping period.

maybe they will give it up for much less specally for the fact i bought 3 of the 1500 for me my Girl friend and brother . . .

I ordered the 1700 model today.

    I got the Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7500 (2.2GHz, 4MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB), Genuine Windows Vista™ Business, 17.0 in UltraSharp™ WUXGA LCD Display with TrueLife™, 4GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz, 2 DIMM, 160G 5400RPM SATA hard drive, 8X CD/DVD Burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer DVD+R write capability, 256MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ 8600M GT, Intel 4965AGN Wireless-N Mini-card, Dell Wireless 355 Bluetooth Internal, Integrated 2.0 mega pixel Web Camera, Integrated Sound Blaster® Audigy™HD Software Edition, and 85 WHr 9-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery.

I compared this set up with the exact same specs as an inspiron 1720 and it was about $900 cheaper ($2111 for the vostro). I'm so glad I waited a couple days before I ordered the inspiron I was planning on getting. Also comes with a number pad on the keyboard, and although I am a student who would use the computer more for video editting and games, it's still a bonus.

I will put my comments up about it once it arrives. I will say that I have been through multiple dell computers and loved everyone so I may be possitively biased towards their computers, but this did seem like a ridiculously good deal

u right but 2day when i talked with dell the guy there told me that not like the other old models, the memory is not eactly under the Keyboard, i mean, u dont need to take out all the keyboard to upgread the RAM or as he said it: "
u only need to open one screw and this is it"
and he ment the one that suppose to be under the KB.
i yhink that this time Dell design it a bit different . . hopfly

I don't mean to be rude; but I think your information is not correct.

I just read the owner's manual for the Vostro 1400 and it said both ram slots are located at the bottom, which mean very easy to DIY upgrade :D

Edit: Offbase is correct; 1 of the ram slots for the Vostro 1500 is under the keyboard. Thus, it will be more challenging to upgrade the rams by yourself. However, for the Vostro 1400, both ram slots should be at the the bottom (according to the online manual at Dell.com).

ppl will tel me that i will effect my doul chanel so how dell offer upgreat to 1.5 GB ? its mean that on one ram space they put 1 stick of 1 GB and on the other space they put 512 Mb = 1.5 GB but not the same . . so i can upgreat my self the ram on the back very easily no ? tnxs

This is what I found on dual-channel mem...

Matching modules must be used to get "dual channel" speed benefits.

Normal memory modules (3gb = 1gb + 2gb, etc). You can use any size but they must be matched pairs (size and speed) to get the benefit of "dual channel".

from what i understand, speed doesnt really matter. whatll happen is the the the faster ram will be downclocked to the lower rams speed. brand make no diffrence as well. i dont know about the size though

Any unmatched pairs of memory modules (512mb+1gb, 1gb+2gb, etc) will only use only one 64-bit data channel. This is also true when using just one memory module. Matched pairs (512mb+512mb, 1gb+1gb, etc) will use two 64-bit data channels, 128 bits, or dual channel. At least that's how I understand it... I could be wrong.

After all this discussion of ram, does anyone know where I can beat $75 for 2x1 gig sticks? Also, is ram universal, just buy what ever 200 pin I can find?

Is it true that Vostros come with DDR2 graphics and Inspirons with DDR3?

Also does the inclusion of this new alloy with Vostros mean they'll wear out less under your hands?(especially the palm rests)

Also about the ram, the processors work with 800MHz bus speed while the RAM they offer is 667MHz, won't this slow the computer down a bit? won't the CPU/RAM ratio be not 1:1 and 3:2 instead? IMHO it's better to buy the least ram from dell and get the proper 800MHz ram later youself

w00t, just got of the phone from dell and cleared up my problem. dell seems nice, but my credit union was even nicer with me.

from what i believe both are ddr2, but that shouldnt be a worry. its already one powerful card. as for the ram, 667mhz is already fast enough. if you want to be on the safe side you can get 2gb of 800mhz ram for $100.

cyberghost, you cant run ram at 800mhz on these boards. only the front side bus is 800 and if you have 800mhz ram it will just be downclocked to 667 search for more info about this.

The Vostro manual has been posted. By glancing at it all they did was change the cover of the manual from 1520 to vostro. Everything looks identical. Also if you look at page 196 at the bottom it talks about ram...and i quote

'In order to take advantage of the dual-channel bandwidth capability, both memory slots must be populated and must match in size.'

So everyone that is thinking of keeping 512 under the keyboard and putting a gig in the back, doesn't sound like its a good idea.

    VOSTRO USER MANUAL

If you click on the 'set up diagram' you can get a closer look at the all black beast of beauty. Im diggin the the all black. Can't wait to get it.

Just a quick thanks to those on this post, y'all answered a few of my pre-purchase questions about the Vostro.

I just ordered on this morning:

Vostro 1500, T7100, 1GB RAM, 8600M GT, 120 GB HDD, 15.4 in UltraSharp™ Wide Scrn SXGA+LCD Display, 8x CD/DVD Burner, Intel 802.11a/g, Bluetooth, WebCam and best of all, no bloatware...

now i just have to call to switch Vista Basic to Vista Premium and see if they do EPP discounts for Small Business orders... anyone know if they do?

    Thanks

Don't know if something like this was posted yet, but I configured a 1700 last night and saved it.

This morning, I went back to possibly purchase and it was gone from my cart and when I went back to configure it again, the GT card option is gone. Only offering the GS.

    Senseless.
